I've purchased this plugin some month ago, I must admit that in this years, since this plugin come out, I've lost one of the most powerful, best sounding plugins out there. Sounds good on all my material, the compressor is awesome, the parallel compression lets the sounds to bring new life, the eq section and master section are great too. Thanks Waves

treztracks he explains what it can do well but doesn’t do a very well job of demonstrating the extremes when it comes down to mixing the vocal or the drums. We come to these tutorials to sort of trial the plug ins before we spend money on them. The least the can do is show us some serious knob cranks. That’s all I wanna hear. I’m sure that’s all anyone wants to hear is what this thing can do.

Great demo of this plug Michael. I found the 'eyes' vs 'ears' element when using the TG on the backing vocals really interesting. The eyes tell me that attenuation of 20db+ on the compressor (according to the VU) was excessive but the ears say something else. The overall mix A/B was powerful and gave a great example of how good this plug was in the mix, when used properly and sensitively. I've started using the plug more in my work, and with greater enthusiasm since watching this vid clip. Once again well done mate!!!

Great tutorial, this plug in is amazing, i saw this afternoon a bit of the making of the ultimate Pink Floyd album, they are using a similar console to this one, you don´t need a lot more with a thing like this, you cover practically all what you need to do a great mixing job, except of courses for the especial effects, and mastering. To me it sounds very warm punchy clear and vintage, great work from waves with this, as always they know how to do simulation stuff, thanks to you too for the great tutorial

Just done my first mixe with this plug in, awesome, it can do it all with just gentle tweaks of the knobs, from de-essing, to smoothing, to de-reverb, to color (drive to taste) to add punch (of courses this thing add lot of punch, it can be heard in the vid demo even through laptop speakers :) ), to me the best from Waves until today, i have not tested the Redd console emulation, but with this one i have enough, easy to get hands on quickly, if you have trained ears, still needing a mastering solution i guess, but i have not an adequate room for that, it the first time, that i really have the sensation to be out of the digital world, it can work in conjunction with the Kramer Tape, but this plug in is far lot superior in terms of ¨antidigitalitis¨ slick

  • @TheSteveSteele

When soloing the bass I thought that the Dyn-EQ- Pres setting would have been a much better choice. There was too much pumping on the other two settings which really made the low end sound choppy and unnatural. And although the low end may have been too loud with the comp first, that could have easily been eq'd out. Just nit picking, but I find many engineers have a different agenda than bassist do when it comes to mixing the bass. We have the bandwidth and dynamic range now. Use it! Just my two cents.

  • @Tazmanian_Ninja

You're right. I've experimented extensively with those settings, and in most cases, putting the compressor first is indeed the way to go with this plugin (which I totally LUV, by the way). The sidechain-hipass is also a good idea to use.

I really wish we could use better terms to describe things like eq than calling them "open." Particularly when the same adjective is used to describe other aspects of the plug in later. What does that mean? You're doing tutorials for Waves and we can't get some more descriptive vocabulary than "open?" "Smooth" isn't particularly helpful, either although at least it's fairly clear what that means in the context of a compressor.

Anyone else cringing as hard as me when hearing the Drive tested on the guitar? especially the low settings sounded terrible. The setting he left it on added a harsh clipping that almost sounded like digital clipping. I guess this is not the Plugin to go to when you want to add just a little Distortion, Saturation. I like the overall sound of the plug. He could have demoed the M/S function, maybe on those backing vocals...

Also, why doesn't the Gain Reduction needle work right? No one I know can read it. Why even have it? Can anyone explain this compressor with terms I know please?

It puts the comp into action before the signal gets to the threshold level. It puts a fixed voltage onto the VCA of the comp. Once the signal produces a higher control voltatge then that takes over. It's quite an individual circuit. When Hold is at zero the unit actually expands quiet signals up until they produce 1.5V on the VCA control/sidechain.
