It's sweet when Ben Johns puts paddle out and since the Newman's don't like to touch paddles at the end of a game Anna Leigh gives him a tap.

I recall from growing up in the ‘70’s that my dad loved watching Arther Ashe play but just as much, if not more so, because of his sportsmanship. He was a gentleman on and off the court. Conversely, despite Jimmy Connors’ ability, my dad disdained him due to his antics/attitude. Fast forward 40+ years and I find myself with overlaid thoughts re: Ben Johns and Riley Newman. I know some think Pickleball needs more “characters” to root for/against, but for me, I’d love to see less in the way of “characters”, more by way of character. I guess that makes me “old school”. Absolutely love Newman’s ability/competitiveness on the court during a point, think he’s probably the person most likely to dethrone Johns, if anyone will. Want to root for him as the “underdog” whenever he’s matched against Ben, but find it hard to. I’ve never been in favor of (overdone) finger wagging, fist pumping, long stares, “YEAH’s”, and the like. The new push to avoid mid-match paddle taps at the end of each game, while I understand the reasoning, is a lose-lose: it looks like you’re a sore loser when you’re losing (29:34) and conceited when you’re winning. Vastly prefer allowing one’s play to “do the talking”. I’ve become my dad.

I'm not familiar with much of Newman's antics yet but totally agree with your premise, 100% Ugh, something like that, would sure look like and feel like a sore loser, darn. Hopefully, it that's the case he'll get the message and "get it." We've all been beat and it's just life, and we need to be better than that. There's certainly no reason to be ignorant, it just shows a sad lack of character or immaturity. Hopefully, he'll understand soon and just let his play do the talking and win or lose, be the bigger man or woman. Hey, your dad sounds like a great guy...even though lol, we loooved ol Jimmy and Mac, they were sure a mess and brought such life to the game :) Smiling all around just thinking about em back then :)

Honestly, looked like if the first shot had been a clean winner he wouldn't have toppled into the kitchen, was only because he started moving across to play another shot that he didn't manage to hold his balance and fell inside. So arguably it was partly the momentum from the first shot and a fault, but also arguably only inside because he was moving for the next shot. I'm a little unsure on what the rule is if you could stop your momentum outside the kitchen, but part way through doing that you have to move for the next shot and that carries you inside, are you just not allowed to play the next shot until you have demonstrated you have stopped your momentum from the one before?
