I found about 30 cups of water in my trunk. It was a beautiful day too when I cleaned it up. It rained again, the water came back. I'm getter sealer today. I had no idea that I needed to do this until every light lit up on my dashboard. The battery got slightly wet. I was happy to see my spare tire. I thought I had lost it. I had not waterproof my roof ever, had the car three years. Its 2001.

Another important thing missed is the 3 ply construction of the tops. The top and bottom layers are fabric but in the middle is rubber core, which is what provides the waterproofing quality. Many products including tent waterless may contain high levels of petroleum distillate which will soak into the top sheet and then rot the middle core, which breaks down and in some cases goes powdery, this will cause moisture ingress.

+humcheemian That's a good good question. Heavy washing with soap will not totally remove the fabsil once its fully dry but will reduce its effect. If you get light rain or a shower it will bead off but heavy rain will soak through. Difference is the way it dries after. if its a shower on a sunny day then you can get sediment lines as the roof dries. The fabsil roof should dry even and stain free. I do mine mine twice a year, two heavy coats and the roof does get wet but stays black. When i got the car it used to dry with brownish stains

Depends on the weather but as much as possible in the spring summer. In general on any fine sunny day i find that the temp above 18 deg c is good roof down weather. The rear diffuser is great at keeping the draft off you neck up to about 70 mph with windows up. If the temp edges towards 30 c then i have it up with air con as its just too hot.

  • @CB-RADIO-UK

    @CB-RADIO-UK

Hard to say as ive never used Renovo myself. Your going to need to give the roof a good wash over and let dry before the Fabsil goes on so i would just try a small section painting on some Fabsil. Hopefully the Fabsil will just soak in the fabric without any beading etc. If you do get a reaction then you prob going to have to give the roof a few heavy washes to remove the Revnovo or leave it a couple of months for the elements / rain etc to wear it off a little. I think as long as you dont go all over the roof without testing you will be fine.

I would have thought that you will need to heavy wash the Renovo a couple of times and allow to dry before attempting Fabsil. Tree sap on my roof leaves dark brown spots but does come off with gentle washing. I use a 2" paint brush and soap on the area to loosen it. Your CLK is prob around the same size as my roof and 2 full soaked coats of Fabsil, wet on wet uses around 1.5 litres. its a good fairly cheap product. Hope that helps

Hi. Wet on wet means you apply a second coat straight after the first before the product has time to dry and cure. Its important that once applied the roof stays dry until the fabsil is totally dry. If its warm and sunny say 25 degree c it will cure in a couple of hours. In colder weather it can take 24 hours. Once applied i would leave it at least an hour before putting the cover over. As for the dye on the roof i would test a small section with fabsil first before i covered the whole roof just in case it streaked or changed the dye colour etc.

do you apply this onto a wet roof or do you allow the roof to dry after cleaning then apply the waterproofer?

I tried Febsil and it repelled water for one downfall of rain. For me it was a waste of money. Do you work for Febsil?

No Dave. Mine repels water for months but if you get a heavy downpour it will over power the product. Same with the others on the market. However it should dry even and repel a shower after.

Hi,can i use it on a Fiat Punto cabrio top? It’s vinyl i think or pvc.Do i need too paint in streight lines. Can you let it dry in the sun when finished? Greets.

I am no to sure this would work on vinyl as it has to soak in. No you can paint it in squares if you like as long as you dont let the first part dry before you start on the second. Yes it ideal to let it dry in the sun.

I've also heard steam cleaning is a viable option, and heard that proprietary household mould removers can also work.

Yes you are going to have to kill the spores. I would go careful though. Something like Milton solution might work. Once the spores are removed then Fabsil will certainly seal it.

Having viewed a number of posts regarding this issue. I have actually gone and bought a proprietary house mould remover spray (£1 from Savers) and have tried it on an inconspicuous area at the back and bottom of my rear window, and it appears to have worked thus far. I will leave overnight and report back on the progress, btw, found your post very useful and have ordered some Fabsil on Ebay. Thank you :)

Hello, I’ve applied one coat of Fabsil. In your experience of 2-3 coats does soak water at all or no? And you leave it out all the time? Have u had any problems. I’ve bought my first ever convertible that’s why I’m a bit sceptic. Thanks

Hi. The fabsil alone wont stop the water soaking in to the top in steady rain. It does bead of on a light shower. It helps the fabric repel water. If the fabric begins to hold water you can end up with mildew and greening on the bottom edges. Ive had no issues and ive not got any mould etc. I do 2 coats on mine. Only issue (for some) is a slight chemical smell which lasts for a couple of days.

So basically I applied one coat yesterday just to test it and it did bead water when I poured some over but now it’s been raining all day and it is wet and soaked the rain in. Is that a problem? Mine will be out all year the roof has no problems and I will clean it regularly so is it a problem that the roof is wet even after the Fabsil has been applied

@@sampansingh9530 Hi. Firstly once applied its best to keep the roof dry for 24 hrs to fully cure. If you pour water straight away it will prob wash out and go patchy. Normally (like the rain today) the top of my roof will soak in about 10 mins of rain. It does bead on the back quarters in a shower. I normally wait for a dry spell of warm cloudy weather and apply 2 coats one after the other so it blends together. Then i put it in the garage for 24 hours. I apply twice a year. It helps keep the roof black as well.

Stick with roof. When you say "hood" my thoughts go to the engine hood, not the roof. On this side of the pond we use roof not hood for the top of the car. A hood is where the engine resides under.
