This went better than expected. Some splash protection is basically all that matters imo.

Splash protection might be enough for some but I work outdoors where weather happens. I'm soaked in sweat and drenched by rain on a fairly regular basis.

I left this phone out overnight recently on accident. I'm impressed at how well it survived both extreme heat and a downpour. It was smart enough to shut down during a moment of extreme heat, and when the USBC port got wet it deactivated it until it dried off. Then it sent me a warning telling me when it was dry. No issues whatsoever despite going through nearly 18 hours of unsupervised exposure to the elements. I feel like an idiot but not bad for a $350 phone at MSRP

@@robivde1 based on the vid, the pixel 4a is working fine with the splash test, but when the pixel 4a is submerged it STILL worked well NO PROBLEM, but when they opened the phone there was water inside. So your phone is going to be okay and will be able to withstand rain.

Do this test on a 6 month old phone. There's a damn good reason that phone doesn't have an IP rating while nearly every other phone does. Mine was ruined by steam from sitting on my bathroom counter while I took a hot shower.

my pixel 4a was in my raincoat pocket while I rode bike in the mild rain, it just got moist. the touch screen got very unpredictable, now it's white. maybe don't trust your pixel 4a will have such great water resistance as shown here.

@@aliasgharkhoyee9501 no doubt the majority if not all of the water inside the phone was there as a result of being submerged but we have no way of knowing for certain since the phone was only opened for inspection once at the very end of the video.

@@aliasgharkhoyee9501 I personally had my pixel 4a 5g quit on me due to water damage that came about as a result of sitting on my bathroom counter while I took a hot shower. I've read plenty of comments from people who have had their 4a 5g exposed to far more water than mine without it doing any harm to their phone. I think that cases like mine are probably pretty rare. For the majority of people who don't work or live in areas where water exposure risk is particularly high I suspect the phone would be just fine.

Looks like it tested pretty well! If water is a bigger than average concern for you though, make sure to get a waterproof case to be safe. Lots of slim waterproof cases these days.

Anyone else's eyes do this 😳 when he started swishing it around in the tub of water? Then the shower on both sides nearly killed me 😂. Although there is no water resistance rating, good to know it can take some splashes. Great video!

Just bought and am waiting for the Pixel 4a 5G. My biggest hesitation was that it was not IP rated like the 5 is. I'd be super interested in seeing the same test for the 4a 5G, although I'd guess it's probably be very similar to the 4a results. Thanks for your video!

When i bought my pixel 3a XL i got a $20 waterproof case, IP68 rated, on Amazon. Hopefully there's one for 4a 5G.

Im just glad it's splash proof, I am glad moved out of the rainy Florida weather and now live in Georgia which rains some times and might snow, I am not worried of dunkin it in water since I don't use it in the bathroom at all. I do use my iphone 8 in the shower for I can listen to music with my JBL charge 4 bluetooth speaker that's also water proof.

Dropped mine in the toilet (when it was clean) and it worked on and off for a day until the corrosion set in. Then it was broken for good. I bought another from Target and paid $80 extra for an Allstate warranty that includes spills, water, accidentally breaking etc ... Basically everything except theft. I think the plan is better and cheaper than extra warranty Google offers. The 4A is not made waterproof at all and doesn't even have any rating contrary to this video. Even waterproof phones can die after getting wet, it's only glue and tiny rubber seals that they use. I bet anything that the phone in this video eventually died. It takes a good day or so for the corrosion and chips to finally fry.

@@relieh I went surfing with my Pixel4a in a waterproof rafting pouch. I must have got a few drops of salt water into it because for several days I got the "moisture detected, USB & Charging" notification. My mistake was keeping it powered up, and repeatedly plugging it into a charger. A local shop is now replacing the charging board, but slim chance this will fix it.

This is so nice,I have always been scared of swimming with my pixel 4a but this video is a huge relief 😄.

I was considering upgrading to the 4a 5G from a 2XL (with water rating), mainly for the updates, extra RAM & display haha - other than that, my 2XL seems okay But this was one of the main reasons I wasn't sure - coz I'd be paranoid if it ever got wet lol Now I don't feel as stressed, subscribed!

My pixel 4a was on a shelf next to my shower and it vibrated and fell, to my horror, right into the shower under my feet. Immediately blasted all holes with hair dryer on max. Glad to hear even if it's not rated that it still seems to have some engineering put into water resisting

The IP ratings are overrated, I poured some water on my Google Pixel 4XL (being careful not to splash the USB port) as it was burning hot and I thought the IP68 would protect it. It didn't. Phone wasn't respoding for a while, left in in a rice bag for a week and it worked one more year. Finally it *completely* broke after a small drop. Screen didn't break but something inside did and the phone does not turn on. Took it to a repair store and was told there was no solution.

Damn, I was hoping that they were going to be like the oneplus phones with no certification but still waterproof.

So bottom line is the company doesn't claim it's water proof or water resistant, but clearly it has some resistance to brief shower splashing or light rain which is a nice surprise.

Would it have survived a quick dunk for a couple of seconds, then have been completely usable without needing to be taken apart and dried out?

It's such a brilliant phone at half the price of the other models.

Is there any difference when case is on the phone? Looks like sim lot is only one place which is struggle from water. Is it possible to isolate sim lot with some material + put case on it, e.g. Spigen and retest phone for bubbles?

Just the vid I was looking for. Google really made a bad choice in not including water resistance for this phone. The 4a and 4a5g will definitely surpass the Pixel 5 in sales without it though.

Phomes didn't have water resistance for years and we did just fine. It's a budget phone. Basically the only budget phone that has water resistance is the iPhone SE and that's only because they just recycled the already water resistant iPhone 8.

Comon misconception about IP Rating The IP rating is not an official standartised test bound to international standarts like ISO or DIN or ANSI norms. They are a set of standarts that the industry agrees upon, and to test these phones on IP Rating, it takes aditional testing and redesign. All those processeses cost money, hence why mid-range phones dont get IP rating. It is to keep the phone cost low. It doesnt mean that the phone isn"t waterproof. Take a look at jerryrigseverything where he takes the oneplus nord apart and you'll see how much water resistent design and engineering there is in the phone. And the phone has no IP rating.

My Real life experience: My pixel 4xl broken (starts with SIM not working) in less than a year without even in shower or ever submerge into water, Google say Liquid damage and no warranty. I know Singapore is humid or probably there is too much sweat but thats not what people expect from ipx68.

$20 to $30 is enormous on a $350 device. they're probably eyeing dozens or hundreds of things that cost or save like $3 each. a budget phone like this is a smorgasbord of tradeoffs. if you want everything then you pay $600+.

Maybe they can't, given that it's a plastic phone? If a phone is all glass and metal, it's predictable and they can make a guarantee for the line. But a less rigid plastic phone will constantly undergo tiny flexes and changes with temperature, and it only needs the most microscopic shift in a seam for it to be no longer as waterproof as a newly made model.

Man, I wish you tested the phone for a few days after the shower test. I am afraid I will get my phone wet in the rain :(

Impressive result without having waterproof certifications

I just got my pixel 4a two days ago, today I had it in my pocket and got rained on, a super light sprinkling, not even 5 minutes. Now there is moisture inside both camera lenses and it won't power on.

Well, I bet if you just let it dry out, then it will be fine. I know a little late to tell you. But, just make sure that it drys out. It'll probably be fine.

IP ratings are overrated...Everyone should take it with a pinch of salt..Most phones get some form of water damage protections these days eventhough when not officially stated..

this video seems to show the opposite of your idea that Ingress Protection ratings are overrated.. given that this phone is not IP rated and indeed did not prevent Ingress of water.

Because it would make sense that most of the water that's inside of the phone, is probably of the heaviest test, aka the water submersion

Submersion creates pressure trying to enter the phone, spraying does not.

@@aharrington080611 Spraying has pressure from the hose.. the water is traveling at high speed and has momentum, unlike in the submersion test where it is still.

I mean its still worth it , it did survive. With easy teardown you can dry your device.

Watching it on my Pixel 4a

Mine fell into the pool yesterday. Submerged about 10 inches until I grabbed it. Never hit the bottom. Dried it off, brought it in the house, dried it off again just to make sure (adding a little shaking to the top and bottom where ports and speakers are), turned it off, and just to be safe, put it in a bag of rice until this morning. Been using it all day to this point without issue. Just plugged it in to charge now and I'm watching it like a hawk.
