They sound closer than I expected tbh, though the original is much more resonant. I just acquired a small waterphone while travelling in London, made by Saul Eisenberg. It's more like the contemporary model than the 80s one, what with the thinner base chamber and general shape. It's a lot of fun. I really wanted to buy one I tried with a vintage horn, a feature I think is unique to Saul's waterphones and which also produce a more resonant sound, but the risk of damaging it in transit was too high. I don't believe there's anyone in Australia who makes waterphones (and delivery, when available, is an arm and a leg), so it was great being able to try one in person and then take it home with me. I'd love to hear an original in person.

I think of a tormented soul alone with their thoughts when I hear that sound.
