Just discovered your channel and absolutely Love it! I instantly subscribed! One trick I learned with my watercolor pencils, (I prefer the Albrecht Durer brand, they are lightfast and amazing!), I used a small piece of sand paper or a nail file and while the painting is wet, I will lightly sand the pencil over the top of the flower petal, or whatever I am working on, for an amazing effect, similar to the one you did in the lily petal. I look forward to watching the rest of your videos. You now have a big fan in North Carolina.

Hi Stacy, so pleased to have you as a subscriber, lots of my paintings go to America! Thanks for the tip, I have seen that one done by shaving with a scalpel, but hadn't seen sandpaper used. Always something new to try, that's the best thing about art :-)

Though I have watched tons of tutorials, I have never seen watercolor pencils used in the way you have. I am was glued to the video, and it's 1 am yet I’m trying your tips. I can't wait until later. I also love Derwent pencils, I think they are some of the best. While I have AD Faber Castell watercolor pencils, I am so tempted to get some Derwent watercolor pencils. Though some complain that the pencil lines may be hard to dissolve, with your techniques that may be an advantage when adding detail, like the leaf veins, and seashell striations. I also just really like something about the Derwent colors they are unique in and more natural looking. I have just subbed to your channel.

I honestly do not have a clue about how to do stuff but I find myself really excited about the idea of watercolor pencils. I've only really been able to try watercoloring in the past with one of those palettes made for kids with the brush that looks like it has a bad hair day. I could never understand what I was doing wrong but I got very little color and just a big mess. I do love the idea of watercolor painting though. Thank you so very much for sharing these tips.

Great tips. Ty. There are watercolor pencils that will completely dissolve & won't leave pencil marks. Derwent is a wonderful Company. But Faber Castel has the best watercolors in my opinion. The Albert Durer Watercolors are amazing. I'm sure I most likely botched the spelling of them. Sorry. There are other brands that do a very good job as well. TYFS

No, the underneath layers will ususally not move much, unless you scrub across too vigorously with your paintbrush, or it's a strong dark colour. Which is why working from light to dark is important, so that when layering you rarely have to go over an area of very dark paint.

As you wish, I often just leave them alone but you can blend for a softer appearance if you prefer.

Hi… i would love to know whether these techniques apply to watercolour markers as well? Mine are arriving tomorrow and I really want to make them useful.

Hello 🙂 I am not sure actually. You can try them on a piece of scrap to see. I suspect that it might work best into clean water. Be careful of adding them to paint because it's possible the granular pigments might clog the tips.

I know. It's probably my crap editing skills combined with yellow jumper and ill advised lipstick colour. That's not even the worst one I have 🤣 It's so flipping hard to get the light levels right in murky January 😒

With the petals, leaf, and shell--when it was all dry, did you erase the initial pencil sketch or will it mess up the paint if you do?

  • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

Graphite pencil can be removed to an extent, sometimes after the paint has dried, although some of the more opaque colours may block it in. The best thing is to put as little as possible on, and remove it when you can at stages through the painting (it must be dry of course). I need to use extra in my videos for it to show on camera, but you should use as little as possible.

Without looking at the video which is quite old now... if I am using loose sheets it's SAA Practice Paper 140lb rough (it's not at all rough though!) If I am on stretched paper then it's Saunders Waterford High White 140lb by St Cuthberts Mill. Brushes are likely to be SAA Silver synthetic size 10 and size 6 although I use other brands of synthetic brushes too, same size.

Yes I sign my name in permanent liner pen. But if you mean the watercolour pencil yes you can add it at any stage, before, after, wet or dry. I like to draw into wet paint ☺️
