Before I saw any of your tutorials, I was actually dipping my watercolor pencils in the water and applying them that way. So, there is never just one way. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.

My favorite part of your painting this delicate flower is that you like to live dangerously when opening your products. Beautiful! I have a calla lily sketched onto a piece of watercolor paper that has just been sitting. Thanks for showing the way, fingers crossed.

Yes they are excellent!
I too had a good giggle about “ the flower’s Mother doesn’t need to recognize it” 🤣😹🤣 I don’t know about Americans but Canadians call those “cotton wool” things, cotton pads... I use them mostly to take off nail polish... How dare the “watercolour pencil police” tell you how to use your pencils! There are nuts everywhere!😹😂 I really enjoyed this tutorial! I just tried to paint a watercolour Calla Lily for my sister... It was a white one...so hard to paint a white flower...😩😩

Hi Michelle, I enjoy watching your videos. I am Dutch and also love using Caran d'Ache pencils and recently I wondered what the name actually meant. I was surprised to learn that it was the pseudonym of a French artist and originally came from the Russian 'karandash' , which means pencil ✏.

Thank you for this very helpful and lovely tutorial! I have been buying these pencils a few at a time, swatching them, and making color charts, but haven't really painted with them yet. It helped me so much to see you actually use them. I tend to paint in more of a loose manner, and paint mostly flowers, so I would love to see you do a loose flower painting using these pencils. Any flower you choose would be just fine. And yes, you are pronouncing Caran d'ache just perfectly! Interesting sidenote: Caran d'ache is not French at all, but the transliteration of the Russian word for pencil, so any giggling over your supposed "French" pronunciation of the word is a bit misplaced. (I have a degree in Russian.) 😊😻👏💐

Michele, the tip about pulling the color INTO the subject instead of toward the edge was exactly what I needed to know. In the PDF (but not in the video), you mentioned, "... or the pigment will just keep traveling and you will get a hard edge." I've been disappointed with the hard edges I get when using wc pencils, even when drawing lightly, and now I know why. Thank you for both the video and the PDF!
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

Glad it was helpful! People always go aha at that one!
If you use a taklon brush or stiffer brush to spread the pencil pigment first then these pencils can disperse without leaving any lines. You can then soften with your normal brush. Of course this is just personal preference, nothing more 😊

I know there is probably a good reason, but why not use masking fluid for the white lines at the throat of the Lilly? I loved this tutorial, start to finish.
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
3 жыл бұрын
You mean the ones where I used an embossing tool? It's possible, if you mixed the colour off paper, but if you draw across masking fluid with a pencil it is sure to lift.

Michele, Holding a waterbrush in one hand and a hair dryer in the other I was just able to push my scruffy edge lines far neater. Have you tried this? Kristen

Hi Kristen, I never use a hairdryer (except on my hair) but whatever works for you is brilliant!
In the leaf, can be used masking fluid?
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, providing you don't take the pencils across the top of it as it may lift. So you could put the masking fluid on the white parts, colour around them but not right up to them and then go across the whole thing with the brush.
Has anyone tried the brush-pen type of watercolors? I got a set for the holidays. I find the brushes annoying, but the colors are bright and pretty!

What do you find the easiest, most workable type of board to draw and paint on? I was just looking at what you are working on. Maybe a stupid question, but I have been using my desk. Any suggestions, thank you
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
Жыл бұрын
I have a high desk and a stool, so I can stand if I wish. I use stretched paper on board, I just have a selection of ply and mdf boards. I prefer the ply but it needs to be thick enough not to warp. Both can be heavy but are cheap. You can get more fancy lighter boards from art suppliers.

As a retired French teacher, I’m getting a bit of a giggle about the pronunciation...you’re very close really. Though I always wonder why so many Brits don’t speak French very well as they live so close to France...I learned to speak it fluently but would’ve cut my right arm off to be able to so easily go over and practice it there, as trips to France are expensive for Americans..
