Hi Mary, you seem to to know a lot about how Jack does his work so I have a question; does he draw his birds with the pencil and leave the pencil work on the page while painting over the pencil (including the pencil shading lines)? Thank you.
Thrilled to discover your website!! Your videos are incredibly USEFUL!! So much attention to details and techniques. I love your methods and thought process! Thank you to SB 2021 for introducing me to you Jack! Amazing resource you are~
Haven't even watched this yet but THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! 👍
Thanks for the tip about adding the shadows first. I hadn’t thought of that before. And thanks for the practice template.
Thank you John for all your inspiration.
Great work, thanks for this Workshps!
Next book! How and Why, yea!
This is great TY
Thanks for sharing, I took away lots of great tips, particularly the use of the mechanical and colored pencil in the finishing details. "Stop before you think you're done" is always the trick isn't it?! :)
Thanks for another great video John. Most of what I see you do is the journal sketchbook type drawings & paintings. Do you ever do highly detailed finished paintings in, say, more of an Audubon style?

I just checked his website and found information about a Zoom workshop on Sept 1st, which involves The Audubon Society. It's also free to participate.

@@marybirder5663 thank you, I'll check it out.
Hello, Jack, and thanks, thanks, thanks for another great video. You mention that you use Shadow Violet from Daniel Smith, but... what color (or mix) would you choose from the Winsor and Newton range ? Here in Spain W&N are easy to find and buy. Thanks

Hi Jose, I looked up the pigments used for shadow violet and a color chart, there does not seem a good match for shadow violet in W&N watercolor. Artemiranda is an online Shop in Spain, where you can get Daniel Smith watercolor paints. I love the W&N watercolor myself, but if I like a color made by another company it is perfectly possible to mix paints from different companies, hope that helps.
what kind of paper should I use for watercolor? I am new at this?
John I love your videos. I learn alot. I was wondering if you could tell me the name of each bird so I could label my picture and also look up colors on those you didn't paint. I'm trying to learn some birds but its very slow 🐌 going. Lol

Hi Lois, #1 Blackburnian Warbler #2 **** Bee Eater #3 White-crowned Sparrow #4 Blue Jay There are many different species of Bee Eater's, most are very colorful. I had to look up the warbler myself, because there are so many. There's many advantage's in researching and IDing which bird belongs to what species.
I have all my paints and brushes, but do not know what kind of paper I should order to start my watercolor training? Help

Hi Pamela, for example Canson xl Aquarelle Watercolor paper. Watercolor paper should be 300 gsm, and for beginners it is best to use cold pressed paper. Later it is nice to get paper made from cotton, but pulp paper (like the brand I mentioned) works fine too, and it is much cheaper. It is also possible to use paper that is labeled mixed media. Hope, that helps.
