Dirk Powell is deeply talented and an excellent storyteller though his lyrics. I’m quickly becoming entranced by his music.

just about the most perfect song to get those emotions going - Powell has that innocent give- it - all-american voice - utterly stunning. this guy is so under-rated its criminal. you only have to look at who wanted to back him on this song to see how revered he is over here.

I went to watch the transatlantic sessions' performance in Manchester this year..His performance was amazing! God everytime I listened to this tune i felt like crying...

Oh yeah, love this song ♥ I play it outside in the streets to people passing by in my hometown in the Czech Republic. Not sure many people know it here, but I myself am always looking forward to this one on my playlist :)

Just added this to my favorites...It's pretty amazing when all the pieces come together. Love how Dirk's banjo is so subtle and still driving in this. Quite the contrast to what the stereotype of the banjo is.

This is what what happens to musician when they achieve a heart have mind. Simply genius!

Thank you for the lyrics 3 yrs later.For some reason i chose that song to weak me this morn. I must of been thinking about it in my sleep .thanx you tube .

Having had the pleasure of seeing /hearing this thing of beauty performed live at previous Transatlantic Session gigs at Celtic Connections,I look forward to hopefully doing so again,when Dirk returns to Glasgow in Feb. with the rest of Trans. Sessions.

With a few years playing this in four different tunings , I am now pretty sure his tuning here is e C# F# B C# playing in the key of E . . All the best , guy

A great version and one of the all time great tunes to jam to - we played it over and over again last night - it worked well with my jet-lag.

Hauntingly beautiful!

I first heard this song in a tv commercial here in Canada. The visuals from that commercial and this song always brings tears to my eyes. Love it.

It's one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Nothing tops the recorded version, on his Lp 'Time Again'. This particular recording of it is too self aware, it doesn't have the urgency or energy of that version for me, and yet of course it's a virtual hymn, as close to a religious song as I will ever get. The first time I heard it my Dad, now gone, played it to me, and I have to admit to crying, just out of pure reaction to the spirit of the song. It's remained in my top Ten songs of all time since, and I own over 4000 records and about 600 cds. I listen constantly, but nothing comes close, most of the time. I was so impressed at the time that I wrote to Dirk who was then playing in a Cajun band that had contacts online I found, I wrote two pages of thoughts and comments, rambling probably incoherently about how impressed I was and how important I thought the song was and what it meant to me personally. He was kind enough to write more back to me, then I had written him and for a short time we exchanged emails. It's truly a song from 'God'. Utterly sublime.

My goodness this song depresses me every time I listen to it---it is just incredibly beautiful!

The "magic" of a studio recording comes from engineering. The magic of a live performance is the dynamic interaction between each player and the music, and that is something that cannot be reproduced in an engineered recording, in fact much of the time sound engineering is about getting rid of it. Old Time/Trad Country/Celtic music like this is alive and constantly changing, as Ralph Blizzard said "I never play a tune the same way once".

Saw Dirk and band in Clifden Galway in January 2014 during stormy weather...this is my version.. Have to say I never tire of hearing it! We play it in D open tuning. Love doing harmony with my husband singing lead. He plays mandolin.

All these musicians are brilliant. Michael McGoldrick on low whistle is a musical genius in my opinion. He is English form Irish parents. Dirk Powell is into Cajun music and sometimes sings in French.

I just came to know about Dirk Powell after seeing a video where he was playing at a concert with Joan Baez. I am super impressed with the great talent of this artist. He is one fine artist!

A truly superb song. We just had the biggest flood on record for this area, so it's particularly apt right now.
