Waterborne VS Solvent Based Paint Review

After using the Cromax Pro Waterborne paint system for nearly 6 months I have decided I have enough experience with it to do a comparison video to Solvent based paints.
You will be watching me paint a Holden VE Commodore wagon in Quicksilver metallic: 470G using Cromax Pro and a Mazda 6 wagon in Blue Reflex Mica: 42B in Concept No-Mix Solvent based basecoat.
There are clear advantages to both water and solvent and I will go into detail about the key points that make either stand out.
The difference between "waterborne" and "water based" is that waterborne still has a small amount of solvents in it.
I am told around 11-12% for Cromax Pro, but "water based" has no solvents in it, when "waterborne" paint is dry you will not be able to freshen it up by applying water but even after water base is dry you will be able to freshen it by applying water.
This is why when using waterborne paint you will still need to use some solvent to fully clean the gun because once dry the water won't freshen it back up.
Hope that made sense but basically look at the water in waterborne like the vehicle to get the paint to the panel, then it will evaporate and none will be left behind.
EDIT: Submitted comment by SATAMAN Schmidt:
Gunman, you're a little off base with the difference between waterborne and waterbased. Your house paint is waterbase and when it rains it doesn't run off now does it? In America these terms are used pretty much interchangeably but they shouldn't be. In waterborne systems the key chemical is something called a GLYCOL ETHER. This is a unique and very important group of chemicals that are called bridging solvents. The reason they are called that is that they can mix completely with either solvents or water. Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is the most common version of a glycol ether. In waterborne paints Butyl Cellosolve and Glycol Ether PM are commonly used to keep the resins in solution rather than lacquer thinner or acetone in a solvent system. Waterbased paints are colloidal suspensions whereas solvent paints and waterborne paints (like lacquer or waterborne basecoat) are resins in solution

I like how you factored in DIY for this because thats exactly why I ended up on this video. Paintkng little bits at home and then the whole thing in a booth just seems easier to stick to solvent.

I deliberately didn't mention colour matching because from my experience there is no real difference, most colours still need tinting using waterborne.

Right. I think what happen was that when they brought in the system, they put in backup tints for a shop that didn't have a high enough volume to cycle through before the tints expired. So even the simplest of formulas had to be tinted when before they were fine. A jobber mistake I'd say. The high-volume shops didn't have that problem. We're expected to keep materials at 4%, paint and body. The industry is changing, and I can't say for the better.

I've been spaying cromax pro for close to 2 years now and I absolutely love it. built in blowers in your booths are a game changer for dry time. I use wb2040 in the winter and wb2045 for the summer to help with the dry time. same when I add to my wetbed (wb2091). for first time users make sure to let your base dry for just a little longer for your tricoats otherwise you will get solvent pop. and if you are getting solvent pop with your whites try to substitute 2010 with 2030 and watch your overlap. I had a cunt of a time with that in the beginning! cheers

I use waterborne and the drying times are a pain but find it doesnt halo with silvers like solvent does which makes it great for smart or spot repairs. it also has way less overspray. there are a few custom colours on water the main one is auto air colours. great vid as usual.

Hi Gunny, In my opinion both systems have their place: I remember wen water born appeard in the market and every body started having a diferent opinion about it... some painters loved it, others were friking out with it! I still use both, but one of the biggest advantages that I find in waterborn is cleanig my guns:so much easyer!!!

Awesome video Gunman. I seek to perform touch up painting with waterborne as a home handyman, in particular to avoid exposing my family and neighbours to that thinners stench. So why are waterborne paints next to impossible to buy as a retail customer? One provider only mixes base colours in solvent based paints, restricting mixing waterborne colours to the industry. Seems Australia is well behind several US states and Europe restricting high-VOC paints which would naturally favour waterborne.

You are very fair unlike the paint reps that flogged waterborne paint (Canada) I noticed you never mentioned cost of storage (heat) how green is keeping water based from freezing (it’s still as cold as ever here in winter) .Paint companies don’t like to tell you the shelf life is not impressive. How green that I buy new stock instead of using paint that I first used 30 years ago ((I do it all the time) interesting and fair video however

I've been a Glasurit 55 line user for 9 and a half years and I cannot NOT fault it at all (such a good fucking system man) save for the laughable price that we were paying for it. A few months ago we switched to Debeer Waterbase 900+ due to its affordable price and seemingly good reputation and I've gotta say, so far I'm pretty damn impressed with it. It's probably a little too early to give a complete verdict on it but so far so good.

Thank you Gunman for sharing your take on it. I prefer waterborne. Edging can be more difficult. But as long as you gray scuff and add hardener, it sticks fairly well. We've tested Spies Hecker on direct-to-metal door hinges and stuck tape to it trying to make it peel. It held. I've sprayed PPG Environbase which sprays more like solvent. Based on your definition, it is water base. I tried color sanding with water. It was a mess. Spies/Cromax has my vote.

You didn’t mention expense to keep paint In storage in winter (I’m in Canada)warm .You also failed to mention shelf life. I can dig out a can of solventborne base that’s been in my cabinet for 30 years,20 without heat no problems. We still have the same frigid temps we’ve always had despite what the climate change hoaxsters say. How is using evil fossil fuel to heat paint green? How is replacing leftover paint paint a good thing (short shelf life)

Solvent wins for us the DIY's. Shorter drying times are important when you have an improvised paint booth. And the lower-end guns aren't water compatible (there may be exeptions). Great info on this one! thanks!

You bring up you want only to spray on the amount and thickness of product to match the factory. Like that's a good thing. But the factory isn't spraying on the optimal amount based on testing that proves this thickness and amount is beneficial for the color and longevity. No the factory is spraying on the least amount possible for reasons of cost savings only. The main reason a factory paint job is in some ways superior is the curing cycle. Factory paint will be baked at 300+ degrees. Giving it more strength and adhesion. And no normal paint booth can match that temperature. Not too mention they couldn't put a built car in that temperature.

I don't know if i miss heard you but all my custom airbrush paints are water-based even the candy ,the make is Auto-air colors and i've used them for years. I'm a solvent based painter and never use water-based paints only on airbrushing so have no experience but have been told they're much easier to use than solvent . Too be fair i had a problem with a Merc bumper and had to get some paint off a pal who only uses water-base and the job came out great. Just a thought if there's a problem when laying down the base with water-bourne paint is it easy too correct 🤔. jim uk.

I'll be painting the roof of my wife's SUV soon as my shop wants $2K for the job. Crazy. It's a 10 year old daily driver with 120K miles on it and nobody is going to see the damn roof anyway. The car is in great shape but the clear failed on the roof. I'm a DIY guy in CA and definitely prefer solvent based for something like this. DIYers can still get away with solvents in CA. Played around with AutoAir when it first came out and it's pretty good. I'm not going to use a booth for this one so I want something that drys right away. I just like how fast urethane dry for my airbrushing and painting. You didn't touch on the most important thing to me, thats the clear. Everyone is still using solvent clear and thats the most dangerous stuff!

We spray woodwork almost exclusively and steel rarely, but I've found some of your videos interesting. We used to use waterbourne lacquer on wood, but we found that even with extremely good prep work, you would sometimes get fish eye for unknown reasons, while we've never had problems with old fashioned standard lacquer. Got sick of the water's fickleness, so now we are doing oil all the time for wood. Water was sure easier on you, and that part I miss, but not the headaches it would sometimes cause. Yes, the drying time can be important as well, you can finish a contract much quicker with far shorter and consistent drying times, its nice to enjoy getting the same high quality for much less shop time. As far as your products and work, what is the difference in fish eye between water and solvent?

That's a good comparison to Cromax Pro, but I think more of a analysis needs to be done on the "water Bourne" vs "water based" example being the Cromax pro and Ppg Envirobase. Resons being totally different chemicals and different systems and processes involved with application and drying. We would find quite different results again is a versus comparison.

PPG Environbase doesn't need to be stirred, just shaken a little before mixing. The metallics float better. It sprays like solvent, except that you need heat and blow driers between each coat (usually 3). When we had it, we used Global clears instead of Environbased clears. I guess because it still worked and wasn't mandated to change clears. Meaning, we were using Global solvent system before we changed to Environbase. Now we use Spies Hecker Hi-Tec 480 (similiar to Cromax). It has to be stirred like solvents do, just not as long. Instead of spraying a coat and waiting for it to dry, you can put all your coats on in one shot and do the heat and blow drying. So, that to me makes it faster than Environbase.

You recommended solvent based for DIY or smaller jobs at home but would there be problems with the hardener content in the basecoat or clearcoat as regards breathing masks. The drying time was a shock as being much longer and repairs during spray time I couldn't do like I did with solvent. But I must say, after getting used to it, the finished product is much better than solvent. Blending metalics and pearls was incredible. I will take the better finished product over time. Started with Onyx HD waterborne and recently switched out to PPG Envirobase. I like the Envirobase even better. Plus dries a bit quicker than Onyx HD.

So I have a mystery for you. I took my MX Miata (2016) into the shop to get a corner seam repainted (my son hit my car in the garage with HIS miata), and the paint shop called and said after they sprayed it over the base coat, they got "fish eye" on the results and it had to be done over. He asked what I put on the car, like silicone wax or whatever, and said I nothing, because it came from the factory. They are having a heck of a time painting this - to the extent that they are losing money on time necessary to redo the paint. Any ideas on why they are experiencing this? This is a professional shop and they did great work on my aforementioned Miata that caused the damage to my Miata. Any suggestions for this Mystery on how to solve it? (Great video by the way...I'm not in the business but watching you apply that paint was almost mesmerizing. Thanks!)

Solvent does have better shelf life. So if your not turning it over constantly, with waterborne, then color matching problems creep in. So basically, I think waterborne is intended for industry only.

Gunny I just moved shops. Last shop was solvent. New shop is waterbase cromax. The rep is pushing me to use a Sagola 4600 extreme. I’m a Devilbiss GTI PRO Lite guy all the way. What size fluid tip and cap do you recommend to use for cromax water for the GTI. Cheers mate

Mate, the pro lite is better for Cromax water anyway. Go TE10 1.3 if you can. But in saying that any gun will sorry Cromax Pro with ease. It's more how you spray it that counts. I'm yet to find a gun that won't spray it well

@@TheGunmanChannel rep said I’m switched on with prep, masking, clearing, solids etc. But I’m still applying water like solvent. Dusting it on, or like he said pissing it on 😬. I’ll get there in the end, I’ve got a spare guard that I’ll practice on after hours with my GTI PRO LITE with scrap water base metallic. Thanks for reply bro. I’m committed to mastering water, even though I think it’s slower than solvent and a waste of time. This shop is primo compared from the shop I came from. Closer to home, better hours and the same pay with 20 smoko and 30min lunch. Cheers mate

Yes but I guess no matter what you're spraying you should be using the correct PPE so there's no real winner or loser, to mention that would lead people to be a bit complacent when spraying water when there are still lots of bad chemicals in it.

You must use a metal card to spray a colour out, colours are no better from my experience, Cromax Pro tinters are very strong so just add small amounts, I was going to mention it but decided to leave out because there's minimal difference, solvent can be stick matched tho so if I had to choose a winner it'd be solvent.

been using cromax pro for about 10 months and I'm having HUGE issues with drying if blowers are used the clear has silicone spots everywhere which is from the water trying to escape. had the axalta reps in to no avail. only way to stop getting them is too let it dry naturally which is normally a 30 min wait and for a crash shop that sucks. Any help from people is appreciated or if this has happened to u guys. spraying with 2 bar inlet and ive tried almost every gun and setup there is, although the problem is minimized by using an iwata entech.

Yup gun man is right on that, fernando you dont know the regulations of other places. There is a reason why the industry is changing from solvent to waterborne paints.not only does California have the strictest regulations on what type of material a shop is using. VOC are chemicals that evaporate into the atmosphere. and lowers VOC products have less effect on the chemicals being released into the shop, thus actually improving inhalation of carcinogens that give you CANCER! Its funny because i live in california and see shop who complain about switching over to waterborne. For example, a buddy shop who refuses to make the change of switching to waterborne and still use NON compliant base coat which dont meet californias VOC regulations. However, since its a small shop they don't have the EPA breathing down their backs. Since southern california has so many shops, EPA ( Environmental protection agency) or the Air resource Board dont bothers. BUT if they do get a surprise visit, they would be fined so much they would probably be closing shop. yup and what gun man said TSD sheet are very important for every product used in the work shop we have a desinated place where the folder is to all information. IF SHOP HAS NO TSD sheet OSHA( occupational safety and health administration) will fine you. its crazy because its all fun and games till you have a surprise visit at the shop. iv heard it happen so many of people. I live in NORTHERN CALIFORNIA now so its even worse than southern California. So yea gunman your totally correct people dont realize the

I deliberately didn't mention colour matching because from my experience there is no real difference, most colours still need tinting using waterborne. From my experience solvent would win on blend and match, you can stick match with solvent but not water and colours are no better.
