Water Trapped in Quartz Rock vs 60,000 PSI Waterjet - Enhydro Agate

Ғылым және технология

We got a hold of a rock that had water trapped inside. I just knew I had to taste it! We also got a little sciency with petri-dishes to see how safe this water was to drink.

Now doesn't that feel better?
Apparently this is an Enhydro Agate and it has been lick tested at over 2 million years old. We might have unlocked the plague. But it was a fun science experiment.

it wasn't rock stuff. One thing they didn't do in that experiment, just take that stick and also move it on the surface of the gel, and also another thing just open it in the room and close. no bacterias in the water of the rock, pretty much guaranteed. there could be microcracks and such, we can't tell on the video. Assuming there wasn't, it was most sterile naturally occurring water sample they could get hands on. judging by the number of colonies it produced - a density of bacterias wasn't that high. but it just for fun, testing kinda done in the way, but if it would be a more serious stuff it would be done a bit differently. Despite of that - quite predictable results.

Enhydros are formed when water rich in silica percolates through volcanic rock, forming layers of deposited mineral. As layers build up, the mineral forms a cavity in which the water becomes trapped. The cavity is then layered with the silica-rich water, forming its shell.[2] Unlike fluid inclusions, the chalcedony shell is permeable, allowing water to enter and exit the cavity very slowly. The water inside of an enhydro agate is most times not the same water as when the formation occurred. During the formation of an enhydro agate, debris can get trapped in the cavity. Types of debris varies in every agate.....From Wikipedia.

It's very likely that the quartz water had additional bacteria because they wacked it with a hammer and introduced particulates into it (besides what's already floating in the air). ;) A much more sterile room and process would have been much more interesting. Also, getting that quartz water under a microscope would be very interesting.

That and the fact that the Quartz more or likely formed around a pool of water, capturing the water, the particles from the environment, oxygen and any bacteria living in the water at the time.

Well, you are right, I have a bacteriology degree and its well known that the blood agar plate can be easily contaminated even with a breath if you are close the petri dish, because it has real animal blood and it works to grow almost any kind of bacteria on the environment, even some kind of fungus can grow easily if the spores are floating in the air, if they want to do a propperly culture of bacteria coming from the inside of the rock, they need to use latex gloves, face masks , a sterile nichrome handle and of course they need to work really close to a Bunsen burner and leave the petri dish inside a calibrated incubator at least if they want a reliable result, but the video still funny and very interesting.

Im sure if there was a magnified slow motion capture you could see the microscopic dust and debris exploding into the air on impact and settling in the liquid. You won’t see it so fast in this video.

Sure, all water as in H2O is millions of years old. But THIS water, as in this exact composition of water and its impurities, has been lying perfectly undisturbed in that quartz while the waters around it have been getting muddied and evaporated and vomited forth by the heavens again. This is like, magic water, man.
