Water Heater Issue Intelli vent Ignition rod flame sensor

Troubleshooting with problem solved! No hot water. Newer furnaces have a ignitor rod and a flame sensor to light the burners instead of a pilot light. This creates additional issues. The manual does not always give you all the possible solutions.

Just want to say I’ve been trying to diagnose and fix my water heater for a couple weeks and your video (I have the same temp controller) saved me about $1200! Replacing the igniter unit was ridiculously easy!

Dude you saved us! Similar problem but was able to fix it by repositioning the sensor like the manual said in your video. I guess after 15 years of being "almost" out of position the deteriorating flame or burner quality reduced the temperature of the sensor. I could see it was poorly placed at the factory so I just bent it (after removal) to point up- closer to the burner. The factory had it rotated to about 2 o'clock- no doubt an error. Thanks again!

Saved me too! To clarify for others what helped me was repositioning the longer thinner rod towards the flame. The two rods are part of the same unit and the shorter one turns red hot by itself not from the gas burner the other (the one I bent/repositioned towards the flame) must sense the heat from the flame like old thermo couplers used to. I used very long needle nose pliers and only had to move it 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. Not much. No cold showers in the morning!!! Thanks to Chip for his helpful input and the maker of this vid!

Thanx for this video I have 2 homes, 1) My main home has an old fashioned "pilot light" water heater that I installed about 30 years ago.. It has never given me any problems. 2) My 2ndary home has a high efficiency hot water heater I installed about 15 years ago, almost identical to yours.. I was trying to figure out why it wouldn't fire.. It glowed what I'll call the normal amount of bright orange, but just like yours, after 3 attempts LOCKOUT..I did not smell any propane..so I thought gas valve failure, I removed the burner I smelled propane in the pipe (gas valve likely OK) and cleaned out the orifice, when I initially blew into it it sputtered like it was partially blocked.. thinking this could be it.. I tried again, still no fire I watched your very well done video.. and thought what if the "heater" isn't hot enough.. so I used my grill lighter and flame on baby.. Thus proving it wasn't a gas problem, but a heater aka igniter problem . Being very cold, and the weekend I moved the heating element (igniter) about 3/8" closer to the burner... SUCCESS.. I would not have thought of this until I saw your video. THANX now I can find a convenient time to replace the burner / heater (igniter) assembly. Wouldn't it be nice if they made these babies (igniters) easy to adjust Other comment.. What $#%^ engineer made the burner attachment to the gas valve reverse thread.. , by design it is very close the the floor, not only it it a hassle for me to get down and get back up my well over 60 YO eyes don't see that well, anymore...THANX On the plus side, now that I am old and weak, I didn't strip it going the wrong way..

I just dealt with the same exact thing and reading your comment helped me. I adjusted the heating element outward toward the burner slightly and it seems to be working now. Thank you.

You may not have to replace the entire ignition. I just had to clean off (using sandpaper) the flame sensor and it now ignites.

Yeah, sand the sensor rod, don't touch the igniter rod and make sure they are close enough together. Did this for a couple years, then bought a replacement kid for about $60. Eventually it reverts back to same issue.

Hi there, I have a gas w/h with power vent. I have noticed the fan was running constantly and the water not heating up to the temp I set for so I drained the tank; bunch of scale came out. It worked fine for two days with the water at the right temp and fan shutting off after a while. But now it does the same thing, what do you recommend at this point? Highly appreciated.

Check the owner's manual or go online and find the manual and it will provide part numbers for all the pieces relate to your State Water Heater. This is what I did. My biggest problem was locating a business in the area that carried the flame rod. I found the part in July 2011 for $103. and now I need it again and it is $136. I checked on Ebay for a new one and it is $51.XX with free 4 day shipping. If you can make it for a few days, Ebay is the way to go.
