Water Butt, Seedling Backup and the £40 Strawberry
Last week of June allotment update
After a fair few weeks of utter dryness, the clock is ticking before the forecast rain arrives....time to get my water butt connected.
I've had a few problems with seedling germination and pigeons eating my peas so a quick update on the backup seedlings I've got going on.
Then - "The £40 strawberry", though as you will see, the cost per unit of fruit is reducing by the minute!

Win win! Thankyou, really pleased considering this is where I had the garlic fail with white rot last year
Squash 😢 flowers 😊 corn 😢 flowers 😊 see look at the positives. Still not too late for beans I grow bush beans right through August. See we are very lucky here we don’t have bird issues just squirrels 🐿️ slugs 🐌 and rabbits 🐇 but the larger 2 we have some defences against. Chin up as gardeners say there’s always next season. Happy growing Dave, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

Thanks, some highs and some lows so far but the seasons not over yet and there's many more positives than negatives. Hope all is well with you too. Cheers
My disasters, peas, only got about 12 pods but better than nothing, broccoli and cauliflowers all eaten but tomatoes and cucumbers are fine this year. Everything else is very small but I’m still hoping they will catch up, I put it all down to the weather, cold dry spring and boiling, dry summer, who knows what autumn will bring, keep smiling 😊

It's sometimes a bit of a lottery isn't it. Weather is a bit strange last couple of years, too hot for my liking, but British summer to come yet, so some rain guaranteed;). You've got to keep smiling don't you, it's never that bad. Cheers

Exactly, it's got £40 of fruit on it alone I would say. No regrets so far . Cheers
The birds/rodents kept eating my beans and peas when they first came up too!

It's frustrating isn't it, once they get past that small and tasty stage it not a problem but I don't seem to be getting past there yet, hope my defences work!
"10 minutes with a rusty saw" - this needs to be made into a t-shirt If you garden I think you need to stay positive or you will drive yourself crazy. I have nothing yet for broccoli besides leaves, cauliflower is no bigger than my thumb, radishes are my normal fail, but cucumbers are starting to come along, raspberries are slowly turning red, sunflowers are close to yours, peppers starting to form, still feels nice to get out and enjoy the sunshine.

Haha , maybe so, it's a catchy strapline. You're right, the small setbacks don't really bother me for some reason lately, just enjoying the experience. Sounds like you have a few positives in there too, who needs radishes anyway. Cheers
£40 fruit salad, hopefully it will be cheeper next year. Your water cube is called an IBC with cage. No idea what the I, B and C stand for.

Don't worry, plenty more fruit on the way, unless the birds are really really hungry. Thanks , I'll look into it , just for future reference. Cheers

Thankyou, someone on site had got a few but not sure where from, looks clean enough and yes fairly new, so think I was lucky, but did cost me another £40! I'm definitely blowing the budget this year.
