Poor Ning'er, she saw no way out. Nothing & no one to live for. All the men used her, and vice versa, except for Zhang zhe.

Actually, according to wat happened, xie Wei had sent the dagger to the empress (xuening) and she thought it was a invitation to end her life. She conceded and only killed herself after she made xw vow to save Zhang zhe. Yan lin shud know it too that xw had sent tge dagger but xw's true intention was for it to help protect her. Neither of them expected that she would kill herself, so Yan lin assumed, knowing xw's character, he must have said something or conceded to something she said so she might have done this. That's why he asked "did you kill her" Afterwards jxng carries this moment all thruout her next life, thinking xw killed in her past life. But later in the story she starts to realize she might have misunderstood the past life xw's intention behind giving her that dagger.

The suicide thing seems usual in asian dramas and culture and that is dangerous. I don't identify myself with that kind of ideology. If things aren't as you wish fight for them, never surrender. There's always an answer for everything, except for death. Sometimes life gives us a lemon. It's up to us to make a lemonade from it.

In a time and place where horrendous creative torture, prison humiliation, and slow painful poisons exists, I guess suicide is the least painful way to go out. In this story, she believes she'll be killed or deposed, and a deposed empress who everyone hates will eventually suffer humiliating torture and death. And she exchanged her life to beg for someone else.
