Watching ALL the Precure, Part 7: Heartcatch

Фильм және анимация

Or, Wow That Was Actually Really Good And Very Much Worth It
I've been watching this bloody show for a year now, and only now have I actually watched the part I wanted to begin with, Heartcatch Precure. It was definitely worth it.

So Precure has a pretty overt message front and centre that you can be cute and girly while also being a sick badass and you dont have to choose. Itsuki follows the opposite path for most Precures. She is a badass but she's scared of accepting her girliness because eventually she will have to sacrifice her badassery. She can't choose girliness because she needs to protect her brother and she can't risk bringing pain to her entire family. Eventually with support she realizes she can in fact have both and that everyone she loves will love her and accept her as she is. I think there are plenty of little girls who really don't believe they can be girly because they lack knowledge or have an incompatible lifestyle to cute clothes, makeup, etc. Tsubomi has a similar arc but Itsuki is one of the best examples of the makeover archetype. She doesnt give up anything to embrace her femininity, she actually becomes a cute girl and her personality doesn't do a huge 180.

THIS!!! I was actually one of those young girls who needed a character like Itsuki. Itsuki remains my favourite cure because of how much I related to her and how much her character arch actually helped me grow. Since I was little I was a huge tomboy and then everyone ended up having that perception of me being a giant tomboy so I didn't feel like I would 'suit' or that I belonged in the cute clothes (frilly dresses and skirts) that I wanted to wear. I felt like I had to never be girly or show that I liked girly things because people would judge me and that I couldn't be interested in both girly and boyish things, Itsuki helped me realise that isn't the case although it did take a couple more years until I finally completely grew out of that mindset that I'd let hold me back. Despite this being a good video he 100% misunderstood Itsuki and her character arch.

I feel like you missed the point wit Itsuki, her arc was more about here actually wanting to be more feminine since her brother was quite ill she was the one who was going to take over the dojo. When she became the monster of the week she was jealous of the girls who got to wear dresses and do all the cutesy, girly things that she wanted to do but couldn't. With her befriending Tsubomi and Erika she was allowed to express herself more and allow herself and become the girl she wants to be

In fact, you're proving what he said. Itsuki arc sends the idea that there's only one way to be a proper girl and it's wearing skirts, being cute, playing with dolls, etc. That's the same lifelong misogynistic message. The idea of her being forcibly "tomboyish" is a repression shouts that every girl inside has the urge of behaving in one single way. Love for fashion, for cute things, for dresses and skirts, etc.

@@thetailsspeed5397 No where did they say that there’s only one way of being a girl tho? Itsuki just happens to be into girly things but felt that she had to repress those sides of her and project a masculine image for people to see her as a legitimate heir to the family dojo. She later learns she can be powerful regardless of how she presents herself so she embraces how she’s always wanted to be. That has nothing to do with “the only one way to be a girl” and everything to do with “masculinity isn’t the only way to be strong”. The whole power in femininity thing has always been a key theme in PreCure.

@@meff841 First of all, I'm going to ignore that, even in your own conceptions that you used in your comment, it's present the exactly same sexism I'm criticizing; so I'm just going to focus on what heartcatch expressed contextually. Seventh episode, where Itsuki is turned into a desertrian. - Itsuki-desertrian: I want to wear one too [the female uniform of a girl] - Cobraja:(thinking Itsuki is a boy) What are you saying? - Itsuki-desertrian:(answering Cobraja) I am a girl. And so what? It's being a girl the reason why someone would like to wear a dress or skirts? Like if wanting to wear a piece of clothes which leaves your private parts exposed to sight from below is an inherent to girls. Later on Itsuki-Desertrian: I want to drink tea and dress up like a normal girl. Oh so there's only a way a girl can dress up, only with skirts and dresses. Any girl who wouldn't like to wear that kind of clothes isn't a normal and a proper girl, that's out of nature. And along all the series is implied that Itsuki's """masculine""" aspect falls down when she starts to babble over dolls and skirts. Now, what's even more stupid is you trying to refuse this while you think there's such a thing as "feminity" beyond chromosomes, that there are such things as "girly" or "masculine" things. That are objects and likes which are appropriate for males and others for females. That's the whole stupid sexist thinking Itsuki's arc has been reproducing. Even though it's not the first time Pretty Cure perpetuates the gender roles

Heartcatch has been my favorite Precure Series, Tsubomi is the best, I can identify with her because I'm shy and awkward like her and on top of that Erika might as well remind me of my more energetic, and outgoing side, and Cure Moonlight is just awesome, part of the reason i started was because I was drawn in by the fact that she is a Moon powered Precure and she looked pretty cooll when i looked her up, when I watched the show, she certainly delivered and her Arch-nemesis Dark Precure is one of my favorite villains and as for Itsuki, see Ben's Comment, though I never really had much problem with her, though relatively speaking she is a little outshined by the others

I have never been so happy for my shift to end at work after I saw this notification on my phone!! Now I would like to say that the wait for this video was completely justified and I thought it was great! You where able to make me see the show in more ways than I already have done, and that's a good thing - so good job my dude! Now, you where asking for someone to talk about Itsuki! Aight, I think I could do that. She never wanted to be a boyish character in the first place, she always wanted to be very girly as she loves the cuteness that come with all things girly. The reason she was introduced as a tom-boy so to speak, is because her brother was supposed to take over the dojo, but due to his condition, Itsuki had to take his place, so she tried her best not to let him down and essentially put all her time and effort into trying to be masculine so that she could be seen as a "worthy" dojo master (as they're all very masculine in Japanese culture, even the female dojo masters). She tried to show off the fact that she was capable of inheriting the dojo and that she would never show weakness, even at school (which dojo masters are supposed to be like in Japan, as showing weakness would be bad for someone who is at the top of their piers in martial arts and is seen as a guidance for those who want to be stronger). The reason she gives up being tom-boyish is because her new friends and her brother (who is the reason for her trying to be someone she's not) tell her that you can be who you are and you should embrace it, even if you essentially need to fill in for someone else - in other words, just because she's female and acts very feminine doesn't mean she can't be the heir of the family's dojo at the same time! I hope that helps you see her and her arc in a slightly better light. I am very glad that you noticed the out of place CG for the transformation devices in previous seasons, cause I seem to be the only one I know that notices, and I thought I was just crazy lmao Anyways few questions: 1. Who is your favourite character/cure - or both, who knows? 2. What did you think of the soundtrack overall, cause you didn't really mention it much but had cool bits of it in the background? 3.Also what did you think of Cure Flower/Tsubomi's Grandmother? That's all I had to ask anyways, Also, fair warning about Suite, don't have your hopes up too high and you might actually enjoy it, 'cause it's all downhill from here yeaahh boii! Seriously though after HCPC Suite's was the most hated season of Pretty Cure, but now it's gained a bit of a following due to some people watching it wayyy after HC or even before it, so tey don't have too high expectiations so they're not really let down upon first watching. Anyways good luck, and take your time :) So I'mma end this by saying, awesome video, and remember: The Max Heart Legacy Lives On, Always! :P

I don't disagree that that's Itsuki's literal narrative, but, I don't know, maybe it's just me reading too much into it. Like that they took that route to begin with was not the right way to go. Maybe it was just that I was also watching Versailles no Bara at the same time, and Oscar is like, the best, this sort of character done to my taste, but...shit, my feelings are still conflicted. I need to think. Thanks for the reply, tho. Answers! 1) fuckin' how i am supposed to choose???? In Heartcatch, or the series as a whole? Let's see here. In Heartcatch, I can't really pick a favorite, but I relate to Tsubomi the most, enjoy Erika's presence the most, and think Cure Moonlight has the coolest character design. Overall....amsdklfjapegfkapdk 2) It was good, tho I never really took much notice of it until I went back and listened to it to get background tracks for this video. In particular I love Cure Moonlight's theme, but somehow nothing ever stuck with me after watching. I guess that's the one edge Fresh has, 'cause damn was that season's transformation theme great. 3) guureato daze. Cool new concept, I suppose, previous generations of cures. I now find myself picturing a Jojo-esque version of Precure, following different groups of cures throughout the generations as they all fight the same bad guy for a bit, and then spin off into a slice-of-life murder mystery. Thanks a lot!

Princess Tutu! For one of the best entries of the Magical Girl genre. Maybe the best. I'm glad precure is getting more attention in western fandoms. For such a big franchise it's quite obscure over here. I'm really into the Magical Girl genre so I'm pretty forgiving of Precure's flaws if there's enough for me to enjoy. Part of the time I enjoy them! But it's still interesting to hear someone be more critical of the series. I feel like Futuwari, Heartcartch, GoPrincess and by the looks of it Hugtto are the only seasons I'd recommend to someone who isn't heavily into the genre. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy the others but I can see why they wouldn't impress. On the Itsuki issue, I think the important point is that her 'tomboyishness' is not a result of her self expression. Her arc is learning that femininity is not a weakness, and her love of cuteness doesn't invalidate her status. I do think that's a valid and important message but it might be undermined that the whole franchise celebrates and indeed sells it. Other seasons deal with it better but there's HC doesn't have a happily masculine female character to offer "another option" so to speak

I agree. I think this is the no1 reason Heartcatch is the standard for Precure. Every season places heavy emphasis on dealing with the dark emotions in your heart but Heartcatch had a stroke of genius by making the monster of the week representations of that darkness. I think they dropped the idea because It was a bit creepy for kids but It was very effective.

Hmm... Your problem with Itsuki's Arc might not be the Arc, but instead that this was the one they chose to write. It makes sense in story, but the possible implications of the story could lead to can be disturbing. I think the accidental sexism gets better over time (Cure Chocolat) but it's deeply ingrained in the culture it comes from, so these sort of "Story vs. Implications" never really goes away...

Heartcatch is one of my favorites season with Yes precure 5 and Smile precure :D The characters design are expressives and beautiful, the music is sumptuous, the villains are interrestings, the fairies are cute. Everything is great in this season! Blossom and Moonlight are my favorites cures in the team, love theses girls XD It's the first time that a fairy die in Precure and that's something incredible in my opinion, another awesome detail about this anime. I almost cry when i saw the scenes with Yuri and Cologne, really! I was so glad that there was no annoying character who becomes a precure like Milk, gosh i hate this fairy. Most of the time she complains for no good reason or insult the heroines. Yeah she learn to be polite and appreciate them but it's not enough for me. Also, if i remember, Milk didn't appologise sincerely for all the moments when she was mean with the others. Oh and her powers are stronger than her partners wich is cheated; her outfit is pretty though, the only positive point about this girl with her human form.

When my sister watched Precure, she started with Dokidoki, so I didn't find myself being all that gripped by what she's watching because well, the writing seems kinda meh for me. Eventually we both decided to watch all the openings of the previous ones, and when I saw Heartcatch's intro, I knew I had to give it a go. And when I finished it, I am so fucking glad I sat through all that. It pretty much got me into Precure and I am super happy that I started with it as opposed to what my sister did. The edgy-ass Dark Precure is pretty much my favorite character in the whole series as of now, with Itsuki being a very close second (Looking past the gender conflict and more into her family story), followed up by Salamader and Olivier. Though I haven't watched the newer Precures past Happiness Charge yet, so maybe someday...

hell no!!, the main series writer is not a fresh blood, actually, the reason the series is so good is because he is the writer of the show. It's the writer of Magical Doremi. the best little kids show ever made(Doremi was made for kids between 6 and 12, while precure is for kids between 8 and 14). actually Heartcatch Precure is good because it's use mostly Doremi staff, Umakoshi was the chara designer of Doremi, Nagamine made his debut on Doremi too(and one of the major director of Doremi was is senior at Toei) And Umakoshi is one of the greatest chara designer ever, he is often seen like the new Shingo Araki mostly because Araki was a major inspiration for Umakoshi(with Akio Sugino) but also because Umakoshi main collaborator is Shigeyasu Yamauchi(the senior of Nagamine who worked on Doremi) And the most iconic work of Shigeyasu Yamauchi is Saint Seiya(who is the most iconic show from Shingo Araki) even of Yamauchi was also the Dragonball director after Freezer, his style really shine on Saint seiya(especially the movies) Shingo Araki and Umakoshi can also be compared because they are mostly know for girl show and magical girl, but also have designed many shonen. And most of all, they are among the best animator working at Toei animation of their times

Personally I like to read Itsuki as a trans girl! Raised to fulfil a 'male' role due to family pressures, everyone (mistakenly) assuming she's a boy, finding friends who encourage her to embrace her true interests & identity? One scene that really stuck out to me is when she's "caught" playing with a doll and FREAKS OUT, as though she feels guilty or ashamed (I'm transmasc/agender, but I know that feeling well from my transfem friends). Additionally, that reading justifies a lot of the questionable "normal girl" dialogue - it's not that cis girls not liking cute things IS wrong or abnormal, but that SHE wants in on the experiences she's never been allowed to access before as a "boy". Like I say, I love to see a "true tomboy" character (and I think precure has fed us quite well since then, e.g. cure chocolat), but whether you read her arc as trans OR cis, I think it's sweet to see Itsuki learn a BALANCE between her true "tomboy" loves (like martial arts), and still being able to join in with being girly with her friends!

I think others already mentioned the Itsuki bit, but I feel this is a similar issue with the whole "idol" thing (which I noticed because I watch them all in order right now). What you sometimes fail to do is to look at the time period and the culture this is supposed to be directed at. Itsuki as a character never wanted to be boyish in the first place. There was a moment, where her inner feelings where brought to the surface, because she was taken over by the enemy. Her whole character is about actually wanting to be girlish. The reason why she thinks she can't do it is because she feels pressured into the role of the head of the family (which includes taking over the dojo). Normally, this would be the brother's job as the first born and the male. However, due to his sickness, he is not able to. Now, this I could remember incorrectly (since it's been a while), but I think, Itsuki's main goal is to protect her brother. She doesn't want that he would be forced to take over the dojo and in that process destroy his body even further. So in her mind, she has to show her family that she is capable of doing it by adopting the male role. She decides to dress more like a male and focuses on male traits, because she wants to make sure that her family sees her fit to take over the dojo and therefore, her brother isn't forced to. Over the course of the series, she learns that she can be both, she can be girlish (as she always wanted to) and still be strong enough to show her family that she is able to take over the dojo. Now, I am not saying that this message is necessarily a really deep one as PreCure at its core is about showing that girls can be strong as well while looking girlish. However, I think the main problem for you here was that you didn't understand the cultural background in Japan, where taking over the family business is still more typical (especially in the rural areas) compared to the western culture. The point is that you read the arc backwards. Like with the "idol" thing (where the main problem came from your prejudice of idol culture), you assumed someone was forced into something they didn't like, because of the wrong cultural viewpoint. It was the other way around with the characters forcing themselves out of a life style they might enjoy. Urara (as far as I remember) didn't want to sing, because she thought acting as a career is enough for her. She wanted to be an actor, not a singer after all. This mindset resulted in her limiting herself (not another person) and her friends gave her the metaphorical push to try out something new and she actually liked it (she didn't give up acting, but she adopted a second path for her future by also being a potential singer). And something similar is happening with Itsuki. Due to the expectations for herself, she forced herself into a role, she never wanted to be in. Her friends helped her realise that she can achieve her goal while also doing what she actually wants to do. Not the other way around. And funnily enough, that is the point you wanted the show to go for. Show girls that they can be whatever they want without having to conform to whatever society expects from them. It's just the other way around, because at the core of the societal norm is this part of taking over the family business that is not that present in the west and therefore, probably didn't even occur to you while watching. At the end of the day (and this is already way too long), I do think having a PreCure that might be a bit more boyish in general could be an interesting take. But at the same time, as you already mentioned, this is a show that wants to sell toys, so they will always play it safely. I think the best you can hope for is a side character having an arc like that and even then, it would just be one or two episodes focused on that character. I just think, you should try and take the different cultural aspects (and maybe even the time period) into account, at least if you want to criticise specific parts of the show. Otherwise, I think your expectations will always be different from what you get.

Edit: after reading through the comments I realized I just said what Ben LeCoyte did but longer and more convoluted, so that's nice. Aight so let's talk about the Itsuki thing! :D This is gonna be a long fucker, so strap in brother. As I was watching your video, during that whole part the main thing I was thinking was, "What the fuck? Why is he interpreting her arc like that? I don't get where he's coming from." After some thought, the conclusion I've come to (obviously correct me if I'm wrong) is that you misread her arc, which lead to the misinterpretation. In retrospect it was a very easy misread to make, considering the nature of the subject matter and the (at least now more than back in 2010) more widespread beliefs considering gender identity in the west. You perceived that Itsuki's character arc was about her gender identity, which to a certain degree is true, but it's mostly as a vehicle for the actual cultural topic of her arc, which is family order power dynamics (I don't know what the actual term for it is and I made that one up, but just bear with me). So (again, correct me if I'm wrong) the vibe that I got that the vibe that you got was that Itsuki's personality is a tomboy, and that she is essentially strong-armed by the other characters into being more feminine, and that the writers message was that, and I quote "even boyish girls are really very girly on the inside". I think the main thing you failed to think about when talking about how it would effect little girls is that that they are Japanese little girls. There's a cultural element in play here that you forgot. Now you know what would be a progressive and culturally relevant topic to have in a children's toy commercial show in Japan in 2010? How about the idea that even though family is important, it isn't so important that you should fit yourself into a mold that you don't want to be in for the family's sake. Itsuki's arc is that she feels that she must step into what would have been her brother's role to preserve the family. That's why she was the leader of the dojo. That's why she was the student council president. It's because that's all the stuff her brother would have been expected to do at that time, but couldn't because he probably had cancer or whatever. She changed her personality and put her dreams and desires to the side for the sake of the family. Now that's in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but I wonder what happens when people do that for a long time in a society that values order, stability, and non-confrontationalism basically above all else, and then one day can't take it anymore? Perhaps it feeds into the 700,000 reported hikikomori in Japan in 2010. Now am I saying that Itsuki's arc is about hikimorism? No, no I'm not saying that. That would be kind of absurd. But what I am saying is that your heavily western reading of her arc doesn't make a lot of sense (or any sense to me) in the grand scheme of things. Anyways the rest of your review was pretty great. You're one of the only people (I actually only think it's you and AzenZone) with any sort of credibility who talk about PreCure periodically, so I look forward to these. Like some have said, Suite's a bit fucked because of the 2011 earthquake which caused some rewrites partway through, but you hope you enjoy it anyways, because it's one of my favorite series.

I acknowledge that it's entirely possible that I misread her, and this was a perspective that had never crossed my mind, which is very interesting, and actually makes a lot of sense. I actually feel a little bit of a need to rewatch Itsuki's bits with this in mind. Gender identity and stuff like that is stuff I often think on, so I'm not sure my reading of that will go away entirely, but this might alleviate some of my issues. Thanks!

I know this is an old video, but id love to hear if you have any changed opinions on itsuki's arc. With all due respect, i do beleive you missed the point of it completely, and interpreting it as "shes being forced to be girly" is quite literally NOT what it was about. at all. (this is coming from a hardcore precure fan but trust me im not upset or anything im just binging ur vids and with heartcatch being one of my fave seasons ever i really wanted to leave my opinion here due to wanting to put my 2 cents on the matter of ur interpretation, have a good day!) (edit right after continuing to watch the video) ok! when you said "i hope the reality to be that the intent was that masculine and femenine traits can coexist within a person regardless of their sex" you got it, thats exactly what it was. i read some of the other coments and i absolutely agree with ben's comment on her as well as their counter argument lol

I have not watched pretty cure, funnily I actually don't watch many, if any, magical girl anime but I really want to change that. There is this one thing that makes me mad everytime I hear it and even though I didn't watch heartcatch I think it fits a bit. I hate it that girlyness is seen as weak. I hate the stereotype that a girl that likes girly things is stupid. I was super mad when I heard that someone said that a magical girl anime was better because it felt less girly than others which told me that something loses value if it is girly. It makes me mad and sad everytime I think about it. And cure sunshine, from my outside point of view, discovering that it isn't wrong to be girly makes me happy in a way. That is what is great about magical girls in general. Of course it is very important to show girls that being a tomboy is great and valid and I hope to see and create a magical girl transformation in which the magical girl is just enjoying herself while changing into a tomboyish magical outfit (I really think that would be neat ) but this is somethinga that bothers me everytime I think about it.

Good overview for a great series! For the most part. ED2 is probably the best song in the series. Heart Goes On is easily the best insert. Re: Myoudouin Itsuki: I can see your points and even somewhat agree. ...but it's an analysis through the lens of modern Western feminist movements. One thing we have to acknowledge is, even with the strides made in the last several decades, Japanese upbringing is still deeply rooted in the expectations of one's family. The more traditional your family, the older your money, the more it's like that. See the size of the Myoudouin... compound? The amount of land, the style of architecture, the size of the rooms, and the shishiodoshi in the garden? That's all visual shorthand that tells the audience "Yeah, these people are old-school loaded." So when we have this family where the eldest is incapable of carrying on the family honour, it generally falls to the next child. Itsuki. And I don't think there's even a question that she was drawn in unwillingly! She loves her family and repeatedly reaffirms her commitment to it, so she threw herself into things with a gusto. But, like many kids, she overdid it, wearing a mask she thought was necessary to live up to the ideal she saw. I doubt her family was unaware that she wanted to be more feminine. Parents and siblings who care that much? They pick up on these things. My reading of Itsuki's character arc, then, the underlying message I see, is that *obligation* doesn't mean you need to bury your own self-expression of who you are; _that being a cute AND strong girl isn't just the realm of those with magic trinkets._ To me, that's exactly why they spent so many episodes on establishing her before she became Cure Sunshine.

Damn this does look fun, just form these segments I laughed out loud :D I get your rant, I didnt watch the show, but I dont get how starting as a student council president and ending as not that, enforces anything, student council president isnt really a solely female or male role or anything :D And like, if she started to be more feminine and let her hair grow or something, from what I have noticed, as long as it doesnt impact her actions and personality its fine isnt it? I mea we dont really know how she was before, we cant say if she was sometimes girly at home or such. Dunno, again didnt watch the show, if its poorly handled and she was more or less forced to chage then it would suck but as it sounded its not neccessarily bad. Usually in these cases I just chalk it up to whether I believe the character would make that choice or behave that way, essentially giving autonimity in my head based on its writing so far and as long as it passes, im fine with it... Its how I justify many of the skimpier clothes girl characters wear in games and anime :D Like as long as they are fine with it, who am I to judge :D

Sailor Moon has a lot of Heartcatch's good moments...depending on the season. the villains however are in my opinion the best part, ranging from goofy to dark and in between and some get decent screentime (MOSTLY the big bads, especially the apparent big bad of Sailor Moon S who actively MAKES the monster of the week usually and looks damn cool besides). It also did 'main female character is a nerd' rather well too. (in fact, the main cast consist of a foodie, a strong tomboyish woman with feminine traits with BOTH being retained throughout, aforementioned nerd and umm Mina who's just uh kinda THERE, and all of whom don't become Sailors until several episodes each into the first season) but enough about that! now, as for shows under 30 episodes....hmmm. well Sailor Moon is right out unless you decide to skip most of the filler eps, One Piece is DEFINITELY out...what I offer is: Gankutsuou, Big O, Excel Saga/Puni PUni Poemy (warning NTSFW finales and jokes), Final Fantasy Unlimited aaaaand the godawful trainwrecks that are Fractale and Dragonauts (Seriously I hate these two shows with a PASSION and wanna see someone tear these to shreds). oh and Nobunagun, that's fun too.

Did you ever get the chance to watch Azenzone, that other Precure KZreadr I recommended? If not, please do so for Fresh, and then watch his video on Heartcatch. Anyway, Itsuki was never told she needs to reject her non-feminine traits because she was actually a girl at heart who needed to realize her true self as you inferred, it was saying she didn't have to suppress her feminine desires just because she took on a more masculine lifestyle. She was allowed to like both, but was not obligated to follow the masculine as she convinced herself. Her filling of her brother's shoes was largely self-imposed duty, her family never pushed her to do that, and the fact she was doing that to herself at the cost of her feminine desires is what the problem was. If you feel her original masculine desires were a bit outshined by her newly realized feminine desires, fine, but it's quite inaccurate to claim she was made to conform.

I don't get how if itsuki, a tomboy who wants to be more feminine, means every girl would have the exact same desires. Itsuki wanted to be more mature by learning martial arts to protect his brother, and pushed away her part of herself to like cute things, which is why she starts being more feminine because that's what she wants and isn't meant to represent anyone else except her.

I don’t have a counter argument on your points about Itsuki, but I will say newer precure seasons do sort of tackle that issue and handle it well. KiraKira has a tomboy character like Itsuki, but she’s never forced to be more girly. In fact, even her PreCure form is a bit more masculine than the other girls on her team. Hugtto has pretty much an entire episode dedicated to breaking down gender roles, they outright say girls can be heroes and boys can wear dresses. Hugtto in general has been fantastic so far and I can’t wait until you get to it! But for now, this is a great review of HeartCatch!

I completely agree with you about Itsuki. However, she wanted to be feminine. The way I see it, the problem is that the show presented this issue as absolutes; it would have been much better if she had gotten to express her hidden girliness without losing her tomboy-ishness therefore showing the audience of little girls that they can be *both* at the same time instead of having to choose one or the other.

XDDDDDDD (I still like Smile and Fresh more but, this comes in 3rd) I think this may be the ONLY series where I actually LIKED all the mascots and fucking adore all of them ! None of them felt FORCED or LAME, they fit into the plot perfectly and are NOT annoying AF like some of them were in the past *COUGH* Milk n dat baby thing from later series ~ but yeah the merch, welcome to TOEI ~ I come from a lineage of Kamen Rider fans so THIS is nothing compared to what we have in KR ............... the level of TOYS and the absurdity (and coolness) of them are multiplied 10 fold in that franchise and can make you bankrupt if you so choose to collect them xD not only the expressions were SUPER WELL DONE here but the seiyuus are ALL TOP NOTCH ~ main girl is Nanoha I think, and dEaD fairy is voice by Ishida Akira, aka Zellos from Slayers, Asthrun Zala from Gundam Seed, the list goes ON @_@ another fucking fav. seiyuu of mine ~ I thought Itsuki's arc was good and well done, not sure why everyone tends to "freak out" when it comes to gender but =_+ It's like you're the heir to a major company who's CEO is your dad but you don't want the responsibilities and just want to be live free ~ Itsuki chose to take up those responsibilities for her brother's sake and assisted with the family business thus taking up the role of head lead male for the family. Precures came along and showed her that she can be something different and "explore" the other side of her that she otherwise would not have had a chance to explore. They're not "forcing" her to be girly they're telling her that she can be BOTH :O oh GAWD the one winged angel I mean the dark clone and her HALF sister ............ it's a giant KICK to the ovaries for Cure Moonshadow cuz 1) her partner DIED and 2) her LOST father that she FINALLY FOUND after all these years and tried to save CHOSE her dark evil clone OVER HER ...... like jesus motherfucking wound jabs in the GUT !!!1 ............ just damn............... sure she's the "oldest" one (not counting grandma) and thus has more "mature" issues to deal with but DAYUEM ...... this girl just can't get a breather X_x but yeah you forgot to mention their respective dark selves and how they had to fight them in order to overcome their own evil selves in that alternate space dimension thingy ~ those were really good cuz for those of us who like dark clone got to see more than just 1 this time around and they're not some 1-shot movie spin off character xD overall this series was great, but the next one.............. eghhhhh............................ doesn't live up to the hype of this one to say the least >.>

I did it! The success this season made at it's time was deserved. I think that the quality dropped a little bit past half because the recurring characters started to appear less and Dark needed more presence. Plus, Dark deserved to live, maybe even live together with Yuri, and what about her mother waiting for her husband? Who can she appear in a single episode! This little family drama was left unresolved, but apart from that I really liked Heartcatch, leagues ahead of what I watched from Fresh. I'll keep waiting for more of your videos. And by the say, I disagree a bit about Itsuki. You see, her family forced to be "a man". She could only inherit the family business if she was a man, because women can't (it's Japan, you know the drill). I didn't disliked her arc because she didn't really changed, she just added, I say. She "was allowed" and accepted to be/do both, she didn't needed to abandon her feminine side. Yes, she didn't keep in the council, but she keep with the dojo business. So I don't think it was bad of "unhealthy", because her arc didn't traced clear divisions for what woman can be. But yeah, you have a point, Itsuke could have been "full macho".

there’s a lot of people in the comments disagreeing with and kind of condescending you about The Itsuki Thing, so i just wanted to let you know that im really glad you actually brought it up. when i was watching heartcatch, her storyline bothered me a lot. the main thought i have when thinking about her character is just…. who is this supposed to be for? the way things are justified just doesnt make sense to me, i don’t understand how her having to fill in for her brother and be overly mature/responsible/etc translates to her wearing the boy’s uniform, keeping her hair short, etc. wouldnt that be considered the opposite of responsible? (in the eyes of a japanese school and a traditional family that owns a goddamn dojo) i dont even think japanese schools ALLOWED girls to wear a boys uniform until fairly recently. martial arts aside, if she was instead pressured to be a sort of refined, mature, traditionally feminine japanese woman and then breaking out of that by liking cute stuff and the like, that would make a lot more sense for her character arc and the context of her backstory, compared to what we actually ended up getting. like how many little girls out there are pressured or obligated into feeling like they should have a more masculine appearance, like seriously. how often does something like this ACTUALLY happen in real life?? i can’t imagine it’s a lot. and idk the justification of ‘well she liked cute things all along so its fine!!!’ it WOULD be fine if itsuki was a real person, but she’s not. she is a character made by people to be a certain way. things like this don’t exist in a vacuum. everything about the characters is an intentional portrayal of something. and id be willing to accept that its a ‘you can like both girl and boy things’ if not for the last episode. itsuki abandoning any sort of androgynous presentation makes this just another ‘cute girly girls can like sports/be tough too’ message which there’s no shortage of in precure, it was just more convoluted here. it just……. it could have been so different. they didnt even have to make her cure form more masculine, i mean sailor uranus wears the same outfit as everyone else and she’s still a great masculine female character. itsuki could have been a genuinely good character for little tomboy girls to relate to and look up to, but they just dropped the ball so so hard. and with the pervasive idea that being a tomboy is something girls have to, or simply will, grow out of someday, this is just… not something that needs to be portrayed. tomboy girls need female characters that show them it’s okay to be how they are, female characters who are confident in their masculinity, who are expressly happier when they don’t conform to femininity. what they don’t need is tomboy characters who secretly want to be a ‘normal girl’. idk. itsuki just feels like a waste of a gnc character. obviously this would be different if she was a real person, but she isn’t. she’s a character who the creators actively decided should be a certain way. and they dropped the ball on what could have been a great role model for girls who don’t want to be feminine. i still like itsuki as a character, i think she’s very endearing and sweet, but i cant help but look at her through this critical lens, i guess.

Im 3 years late to this video But I interpreted Itsuki's arc as a metaphor for transgender girls who live their life in stereotypical male roles but secretly wants to be full stereotypically feminine

I think a large amount of people will disagree with your take on Itsuki, but even as someone who has yet to watch the show (I knew a majority of details about it long before I watched this though, so much of this wasn't new knowledge to me) I can completely understand where you're coming from on it. I don't think there's anything particularly problematic with Itsuki forcing herself into a more patriarchal role due to her familial circumstances in spite of wanting to be more feminine, but I do find the direction the show might take that based on your commentary a bit...essentialist. I would mostly say that's because I'm a gender non-conforming person who instantly projects themselves on to tomboyish/prince-like characters such as Lady Oscar or Haruka Tenoh from Sailor Moon (who if I'm not mistaken you have yet to meet as you've yet to watch the best season of SM although it is not my favorite, but I am sure you will love her). I also kind of feel that at the time HeartCatch came out in 2010...those characters might've been a bit...rote by that point? I can't say for certain but there were several tomboyish girls with feminine wiles in various 2000s anime that further molded upon the archetype that Itsuki fits into, at least I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Additionally, while we as older viewers may be aware of the nuances that their character represents, not buying into the idea that a masculine-performing female character has to eventually conform to traditional standards of femininity at their own behest, I fear that the target demographic watching may not have been able to sort through that package the show delivered to them. So we are in agreement there. That being said, I may still end up having them as my favorite character whenever I eventually get around to watching this series. I do love everything about Heartcatch conceptually and believe that it could possibly encapsulate the Precure franchise and the magical girl genre at large when I sit down to experience it myself, but I'm worried about it ultimately spoiling the franchise for me. I think that I will catch up with Hugtto, watch Futari wa and maybe one other season before I finally get to this revered entry. I can't wait to do so though. Another great video from you, can't wait for more!

It prob didn't help Itsuki's case that I blasted through all of Versailles no Bara while writing the video, so, yeah. Man, I really need to get back into Sailor Moon. Yes, Heartcatch will DEFINITELY spoil the franchise for you. You've got the right idea there.

As someone who is in the lgbt part of the precure community I have seen some read Sunshine's story as being one of a Trans Girl. Read that way her story is far more positive.

32:05 I thought Hugtto Precure was better on a narrative level, with basically every villain from that show being fleshed out and a stronger thematic throughline about THE FUTURE and a bunch of other smaller themes. The first quarter is a bit inconsistent in quality, but the show became consistently pleasant and addicting to watch for the rest of the season. The main characters are all pretty great and lovable (except for maybe Saya), and they all have multiple arcs spanning across the series. The visuals aren’t always as strong as they are in Heartcatch, but I personally really liked the aesthetic of Hugtto, and there were many animation highlights throughout the show. Also, GAAAAAY and gender exploration with certain recurring characters. It came out in 2018, so you probably won’t review it for awhile, but I’d say you should look forward to it. I love it for being a fairly dense show thematically, while being incredibly pleasant whenever it’s not expanding on its themes or developing its cast.

I felt the same way about Itsuki, it is quite the niche thing: Trying to be like your sibling, or really, trying to fill their role, can be really toxic, on your gender as well. You can get things like "I have to be EXACTLY like them, also look like them" which will stunt your personal growth of course, you can also be like "if I'm going to be like them, then I CANT be girly!" so, "if i want to be a martial arts fighter, I CANNOT be girly because it is for boys!" which is obviously nonsense that Itsuki believed in; and precure is known to show its audience that you can be badass at fighting while being girly, so this has been pretty in line with regular precure. it feels like they pushed her too much, maybe they were trying to keep it simple to understand? the undertone was probably not that unwanted though.
