Fun fact: This was a musical up until the point they reach the destroyed village. After the sudden cut off of ' a girl worth fighting-" there's no more musical numbers, which really helps drive home how sombre and serious the war is. Growing up Mulan was an amazing Disney Princess. She was the first "princess" who was also the hero. She was the one saving the day instead of being rescued or helping from the side lines, even when being told she couldn't do something because she was a girl. Plus her driving motivation wasn't romance, she was protecting her father and doing what she thought was right. She was a great role model.

I grew up in Germany and scince we have gendered nouns "der Soldat" is just a male soldier. So this meaning totally passed by me. Thanks for clearing it up :) The english version is in so many moments better than the german, fe in "honor to us all" they sing "we all serve our emeror (...) the men by wearing arms, the girls by bearing sons" - the german translates to "we love to save our emperor - the men go to war, the women bear sons". Just a small difference but a huge one because in the german version the women seem less important. It seems like they just stay at home while the men do all the work. In the english version it is spelled out that you need them because otherwise you won't have any soldiers.

Only western dragons have wings. Eastern dragons are portrayed as serpentine with the whiskers of the koi fish and in many depictions, the antlers of a deer. In Asia, dragons are revered as symbols of wealth, power, and luck. The emperor used to be considered a direct descendent of a dragon. Eastern dragons are usually elemental, always carrying a pearl that gives them their power. They are seen as wise and benevolent beings, contrary to western depictions of monstrous man-eaters. Eastern dragons are seen as almost godlike in their power. They're probably my favorite of all mythical creatures. I may or may not be biased having been born the year of the dragon lol.

8:03 , I don't know if anyone's told you this, but dragons in Chinese folklore are actually wing-less, despite being able to fly! Unlike Western dragons, they have long bodies that resemble a snake's, and claws like an eagle's. Despite Mushu breathing fire in this movie, dragons are usually water spirits who bring rain in Chinese folklore, and those who do breathe fire are usually seen as a punishment from the Heavens.

There are a lot of fun Disney movies. Beauty and the Beast actually got an Oscar nod. Little Mermaid relaunched the brand. Cinderella saved the studio back in the '50s. Coco is my modern favorite.

I still find it ridiculous that the producers of the remake says '' We will make this AS REALISTIC AS possible! '' then add a freaking phoenix and a witch who turn into owls. Yeah thoses are things we saw in real life X) Also, thye replace Mushu with the phoenix who did ONLY ONE THING during the movie; guiding Mulan, showing her where to go. That's it! He didn't participate during the war or warn her family about her mission; this creature did NOTING IMPORTANT! Why the heck adding a mistical creature in your '' realistic '' movie if she will be useless? That was not smart at all!

I think the reason why she cut her hair was that she was tired of having long hair so she cut it short so it would be easier to deal with, kind of like me for instance, I've dealt with long hair throughout my teens, and when I reached 20 I felt that I've dealt with it long enough and it's time for a change. I believe that's why she cut it

I just assumed it would make more sense for American audiences since we usually tend to associate short hair with boys and long hair with girls, but her hair was long enough for a bun so it stayed in between of American and Chinese cultures.

  • @Shythalia

Cutting your hair is like symbolization of changing one's self. Like "I'm tired of being the type of person I am now. I need to change." It's part of ancient cultures.

"Don't dragons have wings?" In most cultures and fairytales, yes, but Chinese dragons do not, which is why, the great dragon sculpture, mushu, and the parade dragon all lack wings. The thing disney got wrong (about the dragons, not everything else that was wrong) is that they can't fly without wings because that ability is seen as part of their mystical being and not a result from their physical appearance. Most do not have wings, but they are sometimes depicted with bat-like wings, which is why they made the reference to it by having mushu wear the kite, making him appear bat-like.

The Disney Renaissance happened from 1989, to the late 90's. In the Renaissance, they shifted to a musical format, where, if the emotion is too strong for words, it's sung, and if it's too strong for just singing, you add dancing. So, they can be pretty big spectacles, and they're all really comforting. My favorite is debated as to whether it is part of it, or the end of the "Dark Ages" (which happened in the 70's/80's). That's Oliver and Company. It has much more contemporary music in it, because it's set in New York City. You should check it out, I think it actually is pretty great.
