Who recognizes that very last melody quote from Phil Woods? A classic! Also, incredible how they play and also how much joy the band has while playing. Michel Legrand looks in love with Phil's playing at 2:16, such a great expression. This was a solo I transcribed together with Cy Schmidt, who pointed me towards this one.I addes some articulations as we were studying the bebop phrasing with this one. Cy is really one of the mos dedicated students of the instrument and supporter of this channel by the way. Thanks again Cy! Let me know what you think, are you going to play this gem? /Jorre

Saw him in a masterclass a short time before he died. his son had to help him on stage and he had a machine helping him breath which he had to take off to play. but my god the second he started playing it's like he shed 30 years and sounded amazing. told us with age he could play less and less notes so he had to pick them more carefully

Apart from everything else: how to sound great on alto by making sure there's plenty of air going through the horn. Amazing!

One of the most underrated of all time, sad to say. Not by those in the know, but by the public at large. A monster in the league of the known legendary alto players like Bird, Cannonball, even Desmond was known more than Phil. Genius. So long gone and even more missed.

Aarggh - I’m SO close to remembering that final quote…doh! Thanks for showing this, it’s such classic Phil Woods with that huge, burnished, perfect tone , deep driving swing and endless, cascades of melodic ideas! For more classic Woods definitely check out ‘Live From the Steamboat’. I love Phil’s good-natured poke at classical saxophone in this awesome intro to a burning rendition of Cheek to Cheek!

I had a leaking high C pad. That would mess me up on this solo and so much more. My sax teacher was mystified. Repair guy just screwed it up worse. I quit sax because of a bad pad. Now I am a piano player!

Oh wow, I need a shower and a cigarette after that. Thanks for sharing. Embarrassingly I know Phil better for his contributions to pop and rock songs more than his real calling. Another example of missing the best when they were in their prime. Rats.
