Accepted into OMSCS with an undergrad degree in psychology. Self-studied 10-15 online courses from Coursera, edX, Udacity, on Algorithms, Machine Learning, etc., before applying. I also started with around 3 years experience software development on the job, and 5 years experience programming web & mobile apps as hobby projects. Started OMSCS in 2016 while working full time and international (working in Japan). After 1 year work+school I got burned out and left work to focus on school (after 10 years full time, maybe it was good timing anyway) Graduated in 2019 and loved every course. The instructors are top notch, and I felt like I received more than enough support to succeed via the online forums and Slack groups centered around each class. Tip: don't attempt two classes at the same time, especially while working. Focusing on one course at a time is sufficiently challenging and allows you to go deeper into the material, coming away in the end feeling confident in your understanding of each area covered. I have questions as a potential international student. 1. Is there any help on career/job front from the school for international placements? 2. How is the MS looked at internationally? Does it add enough weight to the resume to open job opportunities?

@@SolotaireKid 1) I didn't seek help from the program regarding finding job opportunities and can't speak to this much. 2) I worked at Google (branch office in Japan) and occasionally had lunch with software engineering (SWE) recruiters from the same company. When I'd mention I was enjoying the program, SWE recruiters would mention Georgia Tech is a great school. Not sure how it's viewed internationally by non-US companies. In terms of job opportunities from the program, in my case I experienced an immediate boost in internal mobility at my current employment upon merely being accepted into the program. I didn't have a formal background in SWE (mentioned in original content), and when managers & peers heard I was actively pursuing a Master's in CS, they started treating me as though it was inevitable and let me lead more complex software projects. Probably not quite an answer to your question since in my case colleagues already knew me, but that's as close to an answer as I can provide from my experience. Hope that helps.

@@SolotaireKid Not sure this is interesting to mention, but there was also a small group of 4-5 full time Software Engineers at Google Japan who were taking OMSCS with me. We'd do lunches together and talk about classes, etc, it was interesting to me that fulltime SWEs already working at Google 6-7+ years were finding the program attractive. In some cases, they'd say they regretted taking easy classes during undergrad and felt like taking OMSCS was an opportunity to prove to themselves they could take harder classes and still pass. They didn't care as much about GPA and we're purely in it for the experience. In all cases, I never heard any of them disappointed in the quality of the program. For the relatively low cost, the quality of education is hard to beat if you're prepared to complete it.

@@analisamelojete1966 if you want to go directly into data science, take OMSA instead. OMSCS is more computer science related while OMSA is math, analytics related, which is more relevant to data science.

It's tough and I love it. I have a Math + CS minor background from MIT, a Math PhD, and OMSCS is still a lot of work. I've completed 4 classes so far (AI4R, HDDA, CV, and DL) and am fairly burnt out. But there's no denying that I feel a *lot* more prepared for the ML components of MLE interviews and secure in my knowledge of these topics. You don't realize how much you've learned until sometime later down the line. I'm pretty proud of how much I've learned so far. After just finishing DL this spring, I'm no longer afraid of talking about Transformers at work (our last assignment was to code BERT from scratch and train for 10 epochs) and am publishing the research paper our group did. I'm getting a lot more Recruiter attention too now for the specific types of ML roles I'm looking for (e.g., RS at FAIR, etc.), that I wasn't getting before starting OMSCS. Am so glad for the program, best thing I did while staying at home during the pandemic.

hey i just wanna ask you, you went to MIT (iirc have no online degree which means it must be the prestigious "regular on-campus" MIT degree. And lets be honest online degrees are still being stigmatized as a "lesser degree" no matter the school), this shows that you really have nothing to prove and employers would surely hire you/ post grad institutions at even HYPSM tier schools would surely accept you easily just solely based on the prestigious MIT name alone, why would you choose an Online degree from Georgia tech then? or is the online degree discrimination getting better? If not for some bad choices made in school, i believe many students would no doubt choose to go for the "regular" university route at a reputable university whenever possible and avoid online degrees. What is your opinion? Sorry for the long question!

@@grapefruitsyrup8185 maybe you don’t know this, but you know the online masters uses the EXACT same classes as the in person masters. And on your degree it’ll still say “masters in computer science” with no reference of it being online (because that’s irrelevant)

I finished the program. It's helped my career out, but as far as software engineering goes, I think it set me back. I could have been spending my time in class learning frameworks, system design, and how to write scalable code. About the videos, there are very few of them that are worthwhile to go back and watch. They skim over the topic and the real learning comes from the books, class message board, office hours, and coursework (which isn't made available publicly). I'm grateful that I have the degree because now I have no trouble getting interviews and am considered for not only senior roles, but also lead, principal, and staff engineer roles. (I entered the program as a junior engineer who made a career change). I've also come up on the radar of a few people interested in mentoring me toward a future CTO role. So go out there and get it because it's another credential that's going to help a stagnating career, but you're going to do your real learning (the kind employers care about) on your own time. The OMSCS is a signaling device for HR departments and as a way to differentiate yourself for HR departments who don't have the time or know-how to evaluate 100s of resumes peppered with qualified candidates and compete incompetents. It's to show intelligence, high conscientiousness, perseverance, and a tolerance for pain. About my background, my undergrad degree was in math, so I was able to figure out the CS stuff and found the calculus, linear algebra, probability doable. I think I was able to keep up math-wise and had to scramble to learn the fundamental CS concepts on the fly. If anything, it made things worse to learn everything by cramming. I need to go back someday and properly learn the fundamentals because now it's all just a blur. If you're coming from a non-CS or non-math/stats background, it's going to be tough. I don't know how much math and stats you learn in a finance or econ undergrad, for example. But don't let that stop you if you really want. You can always hire a tutor if you need to, or just attend every office hour and hound the TAs for help until you get up to speed. Just typing all this out is making me anxious! I feel lucky because I stood a chance with my math degree, but I really do feel for anybody else attempting this program without the background knowledge. As for why the university lets anybody in, I've seen on Reddit and Quora from people who are "in the know" that they're pretty openminded and willing to give people a chance, but they expect people to drop out. So there you go... just because you got in doesn't mean they're expecting you to finish. But you'll get the chance and maybe you'll pull through, self actualize, and express your true genius. They probably must figure that if they can uncover one long shot genius then that's worth the dozen others they let in who ultimately crash out. This is atypical because in most graduate programs, there's an unwritten "non aggression principle" whereby if you're let in, then the school will help you graduate because you've ostensibly proven yourself worthy just by being admitted, and it's in everybody's best interest to see you graduate. In the OMSCS program, they'll let you in but the rest is up to you.

​@@thecristi19 good question! The graduate program didn't actively set me back out of anything it did specifically. Rather, instead of spending time studying for class I could have been self studying the practical software engineering skills I needed at work. After the first semester, I knew what I had gotten myself into and my only hope was to double down on my strengths and give up on learning CS fundamentals or C/C++ on the fly. I doubled down on my strengths of math and Python and in essence I graduated with an applied math degree. And even then, it was still hard! But it was fun and some people are impressed by it. Starting OMSCS, I was a junior engineer with a math degree and practically no CS experience at all. I did take CS6300 and CS6310, but that was literally teaching software architecture and design to me, a junior programmer who was still learning syntax. I didn't have the computer science maturity to take much from those classes. After I graduated, I wasn't a junior developer anymore and had the skills to qualify as a stretch candidate for senior software engineer roles. But I kept that to myself, and having the degree I suddenly started being approached for lead, staff, engineering manager, and even a handful of CTO roles. I sheepishly turned all that down. I'm a proper senior developer now with the required skillset, but that only came after graduation when I had time to teach myself. The degree opens doors, but I had to learn the substance on my own. One quick note about me personally that affected my experience. I learned recently I have ADHD, so maybe people who are better organized and disciplined would be able to take OMSCS classes while at the same time leveling up at a software developer job. I was miserable for years trying to do both.

thank you for sharing your experience! i have a non-CS major (Mechanical Engineering) but did do a CS Minor during my undergrad. Great to hear that OMSCS has made a difference in helping you get the attention of recruiters -- that is what I'm looking for as well. I've been spending time outside of work to learn the "real" software engineering as you mentioned, frameworks, system design, & generally just building. I'm planning on splitting my spare time now between doing this same learning as I have been & studying for OMSCS, wish me luck & great to hear you're doing well now, way to go! :D

This is pretty helpful. Maybe some people applying don't realize exactly how much rigor they should really expect. It's Georgia Tech Computer Science so I'm expecting it to be top tier and it sounds like it is. For me it's more of an opportunity to prepare academically for a PhD. I didn't know about some of the other programs mentioned here in the comments so I have more research to do now. Thanks for the video and starting the discussion!

Yep. OMSCS is difficult. Even if you have a background in CS already. I've completed 7 out of 10 courses in it so far including RL, AI, AI4R, HPC, CV, HDDA, and SIM and I'm not sure I want to continue anymore.

As some with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, I am currently enrolled in the program and have been getting straight A's. I think this program is doable even without an undergraduate degree in CS as long as you prep well. It's a great way to transition to computer science or a domain that intersects with computer science as a non-CS major.

It is a Master's Degree, so one shouldn't expect it's for beginners, at least if it's credible

Thank you for the reviewing program! My question is, regardless of otp benefit, why wouldn’t I choose this degree since I still apply machine learning engineer jobs in the U.S.? Isnt it competitve for applying jobs with this degree, even though from outside of the US?

I have to disagree with the point that OMSCS is not for someone without background & it's weird that no job placement is posted 1) OMSCS is a rigorous graduate level program and it was not attapted to be easier for those without a background. I think this is quite the reason why this degree is so valuable. For people without a background, OMSCS provides a great opportunity for them and not like "oh you dont have an undergrad in CS so you're never going to be able to get into a serious CS masters". The program website already provided many guidance to those students about how to prepare for the prgram before the offical start of the first semester. It's the student's job to catch up. 2) As you may already notice, the acceptance rate shows that the program opens doors for anyone looks serious. But whether they are going to really finish well on the program is another story. The low cost also attracts a lot of people who only want to know what CS is like but perhaps struggles with it and eventually find that CS is not for them. I will not be surprised that the job placement isn't ideal as compared to traditional on-campus and highly selective programs.

I'm halfway through the OMSCS program. I believe they don't collect & publish outcomes because it's specifically designed as a part-time program for working professionals; Georgia Tech probably doesn't see these outcomes as comparable to other programs. You're right about the self-teaching/self-direction attribute. Georgia Tech already has a term for this: "drownproofing" 😄 Almost all of the help you get on assignments is through the class forums on Piazza. I'd still take OMSCS any day over other online programs: the industry-leading price and (to my knowledge) the largest catalog of classes of any online MSCS program add up to a great experience.

When I attended UC Davis, the pace was fast and professors will just go over concepts once.. and we got hit with midterm. It used to infuriated me (“what am I paying for?” “Whats up with teaching quality..”) But there were people fine with it. After fall in the depression, 💣 bomb classes….. I kinda saw the beauty of this method. I transferred to UC Davis… but many of my friends were A students from their high school they were competent learners, readers, and they were able to pick things fast and self learn. So if professor goes over every little homework and material, it would bored out the students… and you can not simply cover the more topic. School either need to pick # more material or # more explanation. Especially with masters program they assume you got your foundations right. Statistics, Discrete math ( Set theories, probability, proof) econometrics, C…. Calculus, linear algebra…. You should at least got the taste of it via undergraduate. In masters you will start combining all that into interesting cocktail and solve real problem. Since Data Science is Stat, math, Computer Science 🧪 mixture… You should at lest be comfortable one of the three areas…. And then build on others. You need to be self learner. And look for your own internship, build own projects and post…. Get busy. You have all the rights to brag and reach out to DS jobs.

@@rimurutempest2130 The degree is equivalent. The online program confers the same MS in CS. I can't speak for all recruiters - I'm sure someone, somewhere, would judge the online program differently. Realistically, they won't know the difference on a resume if the dates are omitted.

@@rimurutempest2130 If the end-goal is a PhD, then you should consider applying directly to PhD programs. These online programs don't have many research opportunities which are extremely important for a PhD. If your end-goal is non-research work in the industry, then either Georgia Tech or UIUC will be great - look through the courses and choose the program which fits your interests better.

about 8 courses in, def not a easy thing to do but I have enjoyed it because of that very reason.

@@w00borg34 I don't think you need to take those courses to be admitted in the program, however, I would suggest you to learn those on your own. Leetcode has been the best place to learn and practice those subjects. Good luck!

@@w00borg34 I haven't started classes yet, but I think if you select your courses strategically and prepare for each course as outlined in the syllabus you will be fine, each professor tells you the needed knowledge for their class and you can use youtube to catch up or learn the stuff needed

This was a real eye opener as I myself aspire to pursue a Masters, and OMSCS stands out. However, a valid point you have suggested about international students who is looking for a job in the US will not find much success and pursuing directly as an in-campus students weighs your chances of getting a job after graduation. Moreover, such degree which requires utmost dedication is majorly aimed at students who already has real-world experience, as most projects are industry level. Would you want to make a video about students like me who is doing internship in A.I. as to how after completing online masters could help them launch into getting admitted to top universities in US/Canada to pursue masters? As work experience combined with online education (that requires more dedication) would help pave way for aspirers....Great video as always..Thanks !!

Idk if having 2 separate masters degrees would be worth it in the tech space. Georgia Tech is already a pretty highly ranked cs program too, its just really difficult if you aren't from a cs or engineering background. I also don't really think masters programs help you with real world issues, its more of a status thing, or at least that's my take on it. Like regardless of what school you went to we all go to stack overflow university and major in leetcode

I agreed with Jason, not sure if doing another masters will help your application. If you really want to work in the US, then work for a US company in your homeland and try for a L1 intracompany transfer or get a job at an outsourcing firm and have them file either a H1B or L1B visa to work on a US project. You should note that to stay in the US you will end up working 6 years and then file for a green card. Judging by your user name, I am assuming you are from India and would warn you that getting a green card can take upwards of 15+ years depending on your filing status. People often quit or emigrate to Canada or Australia instead.

I did some research on it a while back. I think if you're trying to be a software developer, ML or be in the general tech space CS is better, but it looks like a good interdisciplinary degree for entering Data Science in Analytics type positions. Though, I've heard that you can get some of those positions as long as you have experience with stats, sql and python

@@jasonbondarchuk5361 I agree, you can do OMSA with comp data analytics track which will let you take more CS classes but, in the end, you will be more of a data science generalist, not a SWE/MLE. Good news is that there is not much of a gap left to fill should you choose to pursue the MLE roles.

In some classes you do your projects between the lectures.. in others you do the lectures between projects. These project heavy classes are the ones where you learn the most.

Hey! I just got in to the MSCS at Johns Hopkins. It looks pretty good, offers online and in person classes and since I'm a self taught developer its nice that they have all the prerecs that they want me to take online too. I also applied to MCIT and OMSCS. I'm kinda curious what you think of the job outlook for MCIT. Its a decent bit cheaper and faster to complete but I wonder how employers feel about it not being a straight up MSCS/MCS.

@@AntoineJacques ngl i don't know anything about specifics on their admissions but I applied to JHU with a 3.65ish in Bio (i think they might have a bit of bias for life science majors). I got rejected from UPenn, Vanderbilt, and even Georgia Tech (which is supposed to have much higher acceptance rates). It's pretty competetive so just apply everywhere if you're dead set on the degree. If you cant hit a top school imo its better to just teach yourself or do a bootcamp, itll save you money and time. I also had a full portfolio hosted on the internet when i applied which probably made up for my low gpa

@@AntoineJacques don't feel discouraged to apply if you want, its all just a game of statistics. Just prepare to take yourself through the self teaching route. I feel like degrees in tech are ok as a line on a resume but my classes right now are pretty much useless. Leetcode and youtube alone could get you really far. It's just as impressive to do it without a degree as it is to do it with a degree from a fancy school

I'm very tempted to do this program, specifically the Machine Learning Concentration. My bachelor's is in Data Analytics/Data Management and I am currently a Software Engineer with a DoD Software Factory.

I'm currently in my 2nd semester of OMSCS (completed GIOS so far) and have a BA in History! I got in to tech via landing a software qa job with the company I worked for with no prior experience lol. The boss gave me a shot and a few years later I decided to go for a CS degree. Turns out OMSCS is a great value proposition compared to working full time and trying to earn a BS in CS. I will say that I did my prep work at community college (earning an associates in CS) and also took a few classes at a nearby state uni before applying. All of those undergrad classes + work experience has made OMSCS manageable but still very difficult. The projects sometimes give a ton of freedom but at the same time can leave more inexperienced students totally lost. Idk if I would have survived my first class without industry knowledge and undergrad CS experience.

In deed, to the point! In fact, a Graduate education is not about knowing how to use the techniques. But how to design these techniques from the ground up, which make them eclectic. A Bachelor of Science Degree is merely a 4 year preparation for the Masters Degree. Its very hard to compensate 4 years of readings, research and projects, with self study. A Graduate Education is not about knowing What to use and When to use it But to be prepared to be put in any types of situation, and knowing how to figure a way out. A Graduate Education is 10 years of experience condensed in one or two years. As the programs are designed to make the learner thorough and sharp in each topic area. Coursera started offering undergraduate degrees in computer science with some unis, very affordable, but very important to be able to cope with the OMSCS

I'm an international student, but I'm considering doing the program while working on opt that way it could increase my chances for h1b . It also helps those that want to do a phd in that it may shave off a semester or 2 with the transferable credits.

@@TinaHuang1 Yeah watched your video just to gauge the difficulty a bit more. I'm about to finish my undergrad CS degree so I think it's fine. Of course, I'd only attempt one 1 course per semester cause I would be working full time. Since I've seen videos of people saying two courses plus work is killer.

@@joachimisaac2927 Why would you do their MS program, if you are doing a BS in CS? It's more of an accelerated program for career switchers, not a specialist taught or research masters. It's a waste of time and money.

@@guamiedinho1650 It's only $7000 - $10000 way cheaper than doing it in a school, it increases your chances in h1b visa lottery, it can help with credits for a PhD and it can help get you a raise in let's say financial firms (obviously with some experience, analyst to associate transition). The employer could also pay some or most of it. As said previously I'm still gauging to see if it makes sense for me. It might not for others. One more point would help me to transition from swe to mle if I ever decide to.

I just think doing a more advanced taught masters program at a top school, will provide greater differentiation against all the other new and recent CS graduates. Especially when it comes to H1B visas, the odds of winning aren't great, when outsourcing companies game the system by submitting multiple applications for foreign US trained master students from each of their different subsidaries.

Hello, i wanna try this because i want to upgrade my scale but i don't know if i have all the stuff to go in their without be stressed. What can i learn to go their without fear during my self preparation and how i know i'm ready ?

I have a BS in Mathematics and two MS degrees one in Statistics and another in Computational Finance, I have enough experience in Python and R, and a tiny bit with C++ would this program be doable or would I need significant preparation beforehand? and before anyone can ask why someone with two masters would want another, let me answer by saying that I have a thirst for knowledge and understanding, and I love challenging myself.

I actually started out as an online student, and then talked to the university and became an onsite student and got my masters in 2018!

I’m looking at this program vs Stanford and the University of Illinois. 🧐 Does anyone know about the 1 on 1 tutoring between these 3? I’m pretty good at self study but I’d love to have an instructor or TA to talk to about assignments, papers, etc.

International students don't only study to get into the US. So your comment saying "they shouldn't choose this program" seems a bit off. They shouldn't choose this if their objective is to get a student visa to the US. But that doesn't mean you should avoid it. Plenty of people overseas benefit from this program. Not everyone wants to migrate or be a student in the US.

I choose to study this program to understand CS life so that I can be better work in a top PE fund company myself. I got no interest in working as an engineering developer. But u mentioned the job visa problem, I think it only matters for those who are not people from Canada and Australia. Both citizens got their unique working visas no matter what forms of studies they received.

It is a great program. I have 15 years experience as as a software engineer and came in with bachelors in CS and EE. This is my last semester and finishing up graduate algorithms (it's not as hard as people say). I really enjoyed the program and it allowed me to further my education and explore things outside what I work in day to day

Is it doable to do the AI track (I have a BSc in CS) while working full-time?

To anyone who is watching in 2023 this video is no longer relevant, not saying this to be mean or anything but OMSCS has introduced human computer interaction which another specialization. This specialization does not contain much math if you pick the right courses. And also I feel if you have the right undergrad degree and don’t do machine learning or any other ai based courses then you’ll be fine

I selected the MCS over the OMSCS (just posted a video on it in fact), they are fairly similar programs. I ranked them on five different factors: CS rankings, course catalog, platform, regional appeal, and cost. UIUC and GT are both top 10 CS departments, UIUC is ranked a bit higher (this year) but OMSCS has more enrollees. OMSCS has more courses and specialization tracks, but MCS has capstones and more cloud offerings. Udacity (OMSCS) vs Coursera (MCS). I like Coursera better. As for regional appeal they both have national appeal, but for a Midwesterner, UIUC has more appeal. Cost. OMSCS is cheaper. $7k vs $22k. But they are both great values and likely covered mostly by tuition reimbursement.

I’m thinking of applying for OMS cybersecurity to Georgia tech. I’m a CCIE with communication engineering background specializing in routing and switching with average level of knowledge about Python programming. I wanna learn more about cybersecurity. Is it a good idea?

I’m at UF in their online BS in CS and for me, the one most important aspect I look for in an online grad program is for the school to care about me. Here at UFOnline, I and just about every student I’ve talked to feel like we’re second-rate citizens. So hearing that Tech treats their online students that way, you should be weary. Being online, the isolation is real - mentally and physically. And as hard as Tech is academically, be cautious to not let it break you mentally through that isolation.

This!! A lot of times the shiny value proposition overshadows the more practical things and unfortunately it’s those things that you’ll find that disproportionately matter. It’s important to take a step back and do an objective evaluation of yourself and the program and not let the marketing have full control.

I don't feel isolated as an OMSCS student. I'm pretty introverted though, so that probably helps. I've made a number of friends and study mates in all of my classes so far and we've all pulled through together (and is how I can get 'A''s in my difficult classes). We mostly talk regularly on Slack and Discord, and sometimes on the phone. The support is definitely there -- you just have to reach out to receive it, instead of it being put in front of you in-person.

The cheap tuitions of this program motivate lots of people who wants to change their career to apply. But once they get admitted, hard courses drive students away as they can easily give up their paid tuitions. Another point I want to mention is that this program is the same as any other boot camps which does not fit the ones who have kids.

Yup! This program lets you refund your tuition but you have to drop the entire semester i believe, which led to people dropping out and coming back in multiple times. They also don’t publish attrition rate but I would gather it’s very high. Too many people underestimate how difficult doing a technical masters actually is

It's great that have it, but they need to make an undergraduate course to prepare

The classes are pre-recorded. however, certain classes have webx meeting where they go over the pre-recorded content. The instructor usually uses those meeting to answer any question live. Usually, not all of the students can attend because of time zone. those students can watch the recorded webx/bluej meeting

I am not sure if there. As a OMSCS student, some of the classes have live session. At least 3 classes I took require us to attend live webx video with our instructor. Those would be recorded and made available for other students in the class that live in a different time zone.

I have dual degrees. Associates and bachelors in computer science. I work in the industry full as a software engineer, production support specialist, and production monitor. I've been writing code since I was 12. This degree program is for me. My job pays for its employees to get college degrees if you've worked there for two years and have been promoted to a certain level. Since I'm about to be promoted, I have recently started looking for a online masters degree program. This price tag is perfect. Noe I can pay for my masters degree without my jobs help which means that when the time comes I can get them to pay for my PHD. Thats my plan. I don't visit the world of hard computer science. I live in it. If you cut me I bleed source code.

It's the same computer science master's degree on campus students get. There is no differentiation. OMSCS is the name of the program, but the end result is the exact same as full time students.
