Great tips as we head back there in August for two weeks. We'll be sure to get our park passes. Hope the residents have finally gotten their lives back and are enjoying less traffic. Mahalo.

Thank you Autumn and Brodie for all the tips on obtaining a permit for Ke'e Beach. I was able to obtain an afternoon and sunset permit which I did exactly 30 days prior to our visit. Ke'e Beach is beautiful and the site of the Napili Coast from the beach was amazing. Even though the water was a little rough and there were "No Snorkel" signs posted we were still able to go into the water and just relax. Today was an awesome day with lots of sun and no winds. And the drive from Kapa'a where we are staying was also beautiful. My wife and I love your vlogs. We will be going home this Friday but now we can watch your vlogs and reminisce and say we were there at that exact spot. Thank you.

Also I highly recommend you pick the morning shuttle versus afternoon. The afternoon shuttle is stressful because they do not take everyone back. You line up for the shuttle times and if the shuttle is full and there are no shuttles left you are out of luck. It cut into our beach time. So while it was beautiful I didn’t appreciate the stress of it. I totally get why they did but to tell people they will be stranded without cell service to call anyone isn’t very kind. Mahalo!

They got kinda mad cuz we took up a permit but at the same time we didn’t wanna just bank on there being enough spots for locals and they were like yeah better safe than sorry. But next time we won’t get the permit now that it’s been open for a while now.

Aloha Wyatt! Get ready for some amazing weather. During the month of August it can be pretty warm , mid 70’s to high 80’s however always accompanied with our eastern trade winds. It is definitely not a dry heat but nearly perfect balance between temperature and humidity and or evenings are absolutely amazing. If we could bottle our weather and sell it, August would be one of our best selling months. We hope this information helps in planning your trip and we thank you so much for watching OHT. Remember to relax and unwind you're on Hawaii time.

Aloha Amy!! Yes, this is all new that is why we made this video to make sure people are in the know before they come, to help save you from the frustration. Not sure if you are aware but in April of 2018 parts of Kauai were devastated by at terrible flood (50 inches of rain in a 24 hour period in the Haena area!!!) that literally took out the road to the North Shore, destroyed peoples homes, businesses and property. The road past Hanalei town has been closed for over a year and it just barely opened back up a couple of weeks ago. The restrictions were put in place by the State/County of Kauai to protect the area. If you scroll down in the comment thread you will see an AMAZING explanation from Raymond Barry that goes into detail about what is happening on Kauai.....I couldn't have said it better myself!!! Here's a video that shows what happened kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqyLpbqIYNGWd7g.html minute 3 shows the hillside covering the road to Ke'e

Oh I was watching the news and online and saw the damage at the time. I cried as my favorite place on earth is Hanalei and surrounding area. I did a paddle out off Haena and spread my brother’s ashes there. I want mine spread off Ke’e one day. Was there 3 years ago for my brother and took me four days of trying to park and enjoy Ke’e. Finally learned that late in the day was the best and gorgeous too. This looks wonderful and think I’d enjoy the peace of the beach. Kauai is such a special place. Has the pier area recovered? Thanks and aloha

It's been years since we lived there but we've heard there has been a lot more development out that way because of the light rail. That side of the island is definitely more local and not really a touristy area. There is a luau out on that side of the island call Paradise Cove Luau that we attended a couple of times and loved! Also the lagoons in front of the Disney Aulani and Ko Olina resorts are open to the public and really nice places to enjoy a calm swim or SUP and really great if you have small kids. Have an amazing trip!!

I usually always where slippahs (aka flip flops) for walking around/daily wear and because I have a narrow foot with a high arch the Olu Kai is the best brand for me. My brother lived on Kauai since 1969. He was dr. at Taylor Camp up at the end of the road. Whenever we went to end of the road, you could drive right up to the beach area and the adventure was finding a parking space amongst the trees. Then we could walk back to the remnants of Taylor camp. I hope in all this expansion they haven't destroyed those remnants of the Camp. I guess time marches on and things needed to be more regularized. But it seems like a lot of walking to get to the beach. Feel sorry for people who have problems. Do like the new showering and bath facilities - badly needed. At least my memories of the end of the road are when it was more "Hawaiian". My brother is no doubt spinning in his grave.

The way the situation is in the area now I wonder if this is a clear cut example of “paradise lost”.

Look close as the pass say "Voucher Type: Entry" and thus not a parking pass. A parking pass would say "Voucher Type: Parking" which would also say "Arrival Time: Morning" or would say "Arrival Time: Afternoon". The parking attendant showed On Hawaii Time the incorrect type of pass,

  • @OnHawaiiTime

Good eye!!! You are correct, rather than a parking pass that was an entry pass. So if people walk into the park they still have to have a pass to get in. There seems to be a discrepancy on the 2 websites you listed. My wife and I live here on the island. On the DLNR website, it states that the passengers who are non-residents in the vehicle that I would be driving, as a resident, would require an entry pass. However, the Haena website states that residents and their passengers in the same vehicle can park for free as long as there is parking available. How many different reservations are there? Would a non-resident be required to purchase an entry and parking pass? Example: I would like to drive myself, my wife, my mother-in-law (who is not a Kauai resident) and my 2 stepsons to Haena park. I'm under the impression that since my wife and I are locals and my 3 other passengers will be with me, I wouldn't need a reservation at all. The only thing that I would have to worry about is the first come, first serve parking for residents at the park. Am I correct? Great video, btw. Enjoy the info we get from you two. Mahalo.

Aloha Joshua! We have been wondering the same thing. We really don't know the black and white answer but we can tell you that friends of ours went up there the other day in the same situation that you are in. Our friend has a state ID, his girlfriend lives here but she doesn't have a HI license, and his father was visiting from out of state. When they arrived the parking attendants didn't seem pleased that they all didn't have HI ID's but they allowed them to park anyway. For residents it is first come first serve so if there are no spots for residents you will be turned away. To be safe, if you can get one, maybe get your Mother-in-law an entry pass then you won't have to worry if you get up there and they turn you away. Or you could chance it but definitely GO EARLY, they open at 6:30am. Thank you so much for watching!! Let us know how it goes!

Aloha Angel, this is Brodi. I don't know your background; however, I do want to thank you for showing your passion for the Hawaiian culture and our lands. My Grandmother of full Hawaiian descent and my Mother Kamomialohaokalani both taught me to be a silent warrior. The US Marines taught me, blood makes the grass grow. So here it is, no need for gloves, I love you as a brother. I no longer fight with weapons of war I now use a camera, aloha and my voice. Because I am hapa and took more of my fathers genetic traits I am always being challenged to prove my heritage which hurts. But what hurt more was to watch people not from here doing videos about Kauai and the other islands with the inability to properly pronouce our language or to truly understand our culture, and going places they don't belong, not respecting places then causing those places to be shut down for everyone, like Kipu Falls. This really is the foundation that launched our channel. We want to be ambassadors of aloha. Working in the tourism industry I am confronted with a lot of ignorance but the masses truly want to learn and make a connection. We both know that haole means "white" or "assume aires of superiority" aka...ignorant. But let's truly break it down "Ha" breath, "Ole" without....without breath. They don't respect because they don't know. So we chose to use our channel to educate and the response has been positive and uplifting, for the most part. We need "koa" warriors like you to continue to stand strong for our beliefs and aina but we can do it together with aloha. You've seen our videos and know what I look like, so if you see me out and about please come to me, tell me who you are and embrace me.

Aloha Doug. Although you didn't like our video we at least hope the information we provided about the required permits by the STATE OF HAWAII was as helpful as it has been for so many others that have watched this informational/educational video. Thanks for the view

Where's Cow-eye? Is it by the island of dog-eye or fish-eye? It's pronounced Kau-wai-ee you might want to get the name of the island right for a start. Not from around here are you? lol

Hahahaha......well if we really wanted to use the TRUE name of Kaua'i we'd be calling it Kamawaelualani now wouldn't we ;) Thanks for the view! Much Aloha!

Aloha this is Brodi. I would like to first thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on our video. Yes I am proudly from here and as Autumn had mentioned if we really wanted to get technical on the actual name of this beautiful Island then it would be called Kamawaelualani "The center of the center of the universe" I think you and I can both agree that is a more beautiful and accurate name to describe OUR island that you and I call home. I would also like to say how proud I am of you for being a Koa "warrior" for Kauai.. Both my grandmother of full Hawaiian decent and my mother Kamomialohaokalani taught me to be a silent warrior "without aggression or anger" I chose to use my camera, voice and aloha to fight the same fight, the same battle as you. It saddens me that in 2019 that some of us continue to use a negative attack campaign to send a message. People have been coming to our island long before you and I and this trend is not slowing down. So my question to you is...has the negative campaign worked? For too long we have sat back and let others run the show without coming to us for our opinion on how things should be done on our island or how visitors should act while visiting Kaua'i. I was tired of watching videos of visitors playing tour guide for the world to see. We are literally letting people from around the world tell our story while we bicker about a nickname or some other silly unimportant thing. So we decided to turn to KZread and start a channel to educate visitors on the proper etiquette on how to be while here and the response has been amazing. It's time to start a new campaign, a campaign to educate and not hate. Visitors are here and will continue to come here in growing numbers. Choosing to act with Aloha does not display weakness it is and will always be our strength. As you know Haole broken down into two words means something completely different. Ha "breath" ole " without".. Without breath " to not know". So we chose to use KZread as our platform to let visitors know how to act and treat our island with respect. Our videos are done with love and respect for Kauai and other locals like you. I don't know you but I do know that we share at least one common interest, our home.. So lets not let a nickname for our island divide us. I hope that you and your family are blessed with so much Aloha!

@@OnHawaiiTime my bad braddah ;) Yes you are right, it is indeed Kamawaelualani - although I believe in the old dialect it would have been Tamawaelualani? This name is even older than the Polynesian settlement and pushes back further still to the times of the Mu and the ways of the ancients who lived here during the last ice-age. They were the last great stone workers, the ones the Tahitians called the Manahune, the blood of which still runs in the islanders of today. Sorry if I came across as negative, it's just hard seeing so many of these videos and I obviously mistook you for something you are not, and I never used the term Ha'ole either by the way, I'm not one to throw that around willy-nilly.

@@bubbabigmin Yes my Braddah!! Thats what I'm talking about! I love that type of knowledge, I'm so glad you mentioned the Manahune. I plan on doing a video talking about the Manahune and dispelling the myth that they were mythical little people. They were real people and incredible engineers. There is no need to apologize. I love your passion for our culture. I also would never assume that you would use the term Ha'ole.. I love this type of dialogue and thank you for responding back, we truly mean well in our videos. I also knew that we would receive some backlash from other locals because I don't look Hawaiian and Autumn is white as snow. But I hope having a open line of communication like this will eventually grow support amongst the locals community. If you have any ideas for a video that you would like us to create so we can pass on to visitors let us know because your voice is needed and if you see me out and about stop me I'd love to embrace you! Thank you again

You guys seem really negative! No need to worry I will never travel to that beach when my family and I return to Hawaii. It's great to be educated by you guys, about the beach that I shouldn't go to. Thanks for letting me know...It's ALL YOURS!!

Aloha! We want EVERYONE to enjoy the beach and the only way that is going to happen is if everyone is aware that there are steps that have to be taken in order to get there. We definitely are not trying to keep it to ourselves. Our intent is to inform visitors of the changes that are taking place here on Kauai so visitors don't waste their time driving all the way up to the end of the road without a permit only to be turned around. We thank you for brining this to our attention because we are not negative people and do not want to come across that way on these videos that we work extremely hard to create for our OHT ohana.

I didn't get that from their video, they are trying to help educate people who want to visit the beach and not be disappointed by getting turned away. I really wanted to visit Ke'e when we were there in May but it wasn't open yet - Next time which I hope is soon. I hope you and your family have a great trip.

Thank you Ray! It was such a bummer to see so many people get turned around just in the short time we were chatting with the park attendants. They have a pretty tough job. We are just trying to do our part to help prevent that from happening. Hope you get to come back soon and enjoy Ke'e Beach!
