I would LOVE to hear her sing Defying Gravity after she stops playing Janis and can rest her voice a bit. I think she sang absolutely wonderfully, but with a song like that, which she hasn't practiced much, she could sing it so much better with some vocal rest.

Idk honestly. She does but you can't deny that her voice doesn't sound tired. I saw her in previews in March for Mean Girls and she was amazing. But just this summer, I've had multiple friends come back from New York saying that she sounded realllly beat up. This is not meant to be hate, I'm just stating my honest opinion!

I adore Barrett. Absolutely adore her. She's one of my performance idols. But. She. Needs. A. Good. Six. Moths. Of. Vocal. Rest. She has since she finished Heathers. Doing Heathers was a huge strain on her voice, and even in Mean Girls, it didn't quite have the same quality that her voice had when doing Heathers. She could play a perfect Elphaba. But that's only going to even be slightly plausible if she takes awhile to let her voice rest instead of straining it with another show. I really hope she does, she would really, really benefit from it, and I would LOVE to see her as Elphaba.

For everyone who is attacking Barrett for her performance of defying gravity: First of all, this song is going to sound weird with just a piano regardless of who's singing it, it was written to be accompanied with full orchestration. Second of all, Barrett is singing on Broadway 8 times a week which means: a- Her voice is not at its full capacity as it is constantly being pushed. Singing on Broadway 8 times a week takes a tall on your voice eventually no matter how good of a singer you are, it even did it to the OG Elphie herself, Indina Menzel. And B- She clearly doesn't have time to properly prepare for such a song, being currently on Broadway and everything. I am sure the song is in her rep book, but it doesn't mean that she has it polished and ready to go at all times. Defying gravity is one of the hardest songs on Broadway, and Elphabas usually take weeks to master it. All that being said and considered, she still did a good job at this, we should be glad she made time out of her schedule to film something like this for us her fans, not bash her for this. No one is 100% and anyone who has experience with performance can tell you that having "down" performances is simply inevitable. I love Barrett and I would love to see her as Elphie, once she's well rested and has had enough time to work more on this song.

Yes ma'AM/sIR!! YOU GO AND TELL THEM ALL! And as a performer, I completely agree. Voice cracks, dry voices, flatness, and just bad days are inevitable in Theatre, because we are constantly using our voice and projecting.

I would love to see her as elphaba she has that awkward but strong college girl vibe that is perfect elphaba. I feel like if she had some vocal rest from mean girls defying gravity would have been even more perfect because lets face it Barrett needs to be Elphaba at some point

Sometimes singers have "bad" days. (Yes this wasn't her best performance but she didn't suck) That's life. But we've all seen the Heathers bootleg and know how amazing she is. Also I think she would be perfect for the role as the big Hollywood producers usually want somebody with a bigger following to star in a movie musical. She has a good sized fanbase so that's good for them but she's also a Broadway professional which would make us theatre lovers happy :)

Maybe if she gets with a vocal coach that knows what they’re doing and can help her strengthen her voice to those high notes bc yeesh... not good. She would lose her voice if she sang a score such as Elphabas, with her poor technique, 8 times a week. She has a good voice and a fantastic head voice, but her belting just sounds unhealthy and inconsistent and painful truthfully. I can’t imagine her throat doesn’t hurt after a night of Mean Girls bc she has some belty moments there too.

people say defying gravity is not good, but this is what i say to them: 1. shes doing 8 shows a week, that affects your voice 2. its an incredibely hard song, but w more work, it could sound so amazing 3. ding dong ur opinion is wrong, shes sounds terrific, id like to see you do that

i think a lot of people don’t get that those notes in defying gravity are supposed to be screamed. screams of triumph and untapped emotion. barrett puts that wonderfully here.

Amanda Heywood agreed. defying gravity takes so long to learn so she does need practice as does everyone who attempts to sing this song, but you are correct. i think she would be great as elphaba in the movie AFTER she is done with janis and is on vocal rest for longer than four months.

Okay I was reading the comments before it got to defying gravity and I was expecting it to sound shaky and not great and she started singing and wow. I was very pleasantly surprised. She sounded awesome

Imogen C I love her but defying gravity wasn’t fantastic, I think it might’ve been partially the mic/eq-ing. Like when she gets louder there’s almost no adjustment for it. Also the piano doesn’t get louder w her and is really quiet to begin with. Idk they all sound a lil wonky to me but I think it’s just the setup and the fact that you can barely hear the piano, idk much about that stuff though

As a young musical theater performer I’m so envious of her voice and her ability to insert a character into just a song. Also her range in style is just AHHH!! I aspire to be as talented as her one day

That's why there are warnings in the playbill abt themes and content (loud noises, flashing lights). Legally, they always have to put those warnings. The main reason it won't go to Broadway is seating. There was always enough seating in the Off-Broadway stages for Heathers, so there was no need to bring it to Broadway. Just because the online fanbase was huge, doesn't mean that it was going to go to Broadway because the fact of the matter is that the online fanbase wouldn't have gone to see it on Broadway anyways for whatever reason. ^at least that's what my theatre professor told me. Shows go to Broadway for more seating demand.

Elle Ray she typically just uses full chest or belts in everything i’ve heard her in personally. maybe there’s been one recording she’s not done that on but on cast recordings i usually only hear strong full chest voice or belt

She has an amazing voice and I love her talking voice too lol. I've only seen her in Mean Girls (which I enjoyed a lot!!) and I really want to see her in a different role! I think she is a perfect Janis.

I love Barrett!! Hearing her sing more classical was phenomenal ! Her head voice is stunning. However wasn’t a fan of Defying Gravity AT ALL. She did amazing in the other two though. LOVE HER

some people attack her because sometimes her voice cracks or something. barrett done heathers as veronica for those who don't know (i think everyone knows that), and she had to belt some serious high notes and now she is playing janis in mean girls which is also very high so give her and her voice some rest, please. she is amazing and breath-taking anyway 😍❤
