That Revenge Party joke was such a great unexpected fourth wall breaker. lol
@JoelBrewton
3 ай бұрын
Just my own personal opinion, but I've NEVER cared for jokes that point out to the audience that this is a musical. The musical in question has to be EXTREMELY clever in order to make them work, otherwise it just kinda comes off as "Hey, look how weird it is that everyone is singing!" and this movie doesn't quite cut it. I do appreciate the stylism of the film, especially the way that it encorporates social media videos into it's cinematograph, but this joke just comes out of nowhere, especially since the song "Revenge Party" takes an almost Chicago-like approach in it's diegesis. It's one of the many reasons I hated the 2014 remake of "Annie" since the entire thing was essentially one giant joke at the fact that it's a musical, and it got tired REALLY fast.
@phoneoperator
3 ай бұрын
can you explain how this is a joke? sorry for being slow...
@StefWriter
3 ай бұрын
@@phoneoperator No apologies necessary! 🙂 The characters who make the joke are musicians in the movie as well as students at the school as part of the ensemble. They're acknowledging that in this scene through meta humor when one apologizes to the other for accusing them of dragging during Revenge Party, a musical number in a previous scene, because there is so much pressure on them to move the story forward through montages like that. It's basically drawing attention to the fact that the characters are self aware that they are performing in musical with them straight up acknowledging it verbally like that. When the Principal asks, "What is going on?" it's as if he doesn't realize that he is in a musical, so that particular apology would make no sense to him, but instead of explaining all of this to him, Ms. Norbury just brushes it off. lol This somewhat insinuates that she is in on the musical as well. I hope I explained that well for you! lol! Thank you for asking! 😊

@@JoelBrewton sheesh, good thing there's only one of this type of joke then 😂 I agree that this particular joke's humor feels jarring & out of place in the script, but the movie overall doesn't abuse the "oops the music is actually diegetic" trope at all. Apart from this clip, only Janis & Damien break the fourth wall, and in those scenes they only interact with us (the audience). I can't think of any other scene where the in-world characters were bothered by the music. Maybe the girl bumping into Cady after her What If song, ending it abruptly? But then again you could say she was just fantasizing in that moment.
super glad that at least in this version they gave backstory on why they had a random person at the assembly and didn't call security.
Janis: pressures Cady into spying on Regina even though they literally met 5 minutes ago and Cady knows nothing about their beef Also Janis: uses Cady's heartbreak over Aaron as an excuse to rope Cady into a revenge plot to completely ruin Regina's life Also Janis: "I have no one to apologize to but myself." Okay girl.
@el3386

In fairness, she did have an apology written down but then went off book when Regina made a joke at her expense. They were literally gathered there to apologize to their friends/classmates and Regina still made a crack at her. So yeah, I don't really blame Janis for going off.

Janis in the original is just as a mean girl as regina is, theyre two sides of the same coin. Its just shes honest about it. I think too many people identified with her though (understandable for bullied and queer kids i guess) and they didnt want her to be as outwardly bad but they also didnt want to change the story too much. @@tylerkochman1007i would agree, except in this version they used the term pyro with a slur to describe her and the joke regina made was about fire, a clear reference to the name they called her throughout the film, that she was aware of (also in this version, it was a reference to the exact event that ended their friendship which was a fire), so the comment regina made did in fact have a reason to trigger janis.

its not that shes "not like other girls". she knows that shes mean and makes it very clear. the difference between her and the others though is that she's upfront about her meanness. she doesnt backstab or talk behind someones back or pretend to be their friend when theyre not. you always know where you stand with her and thats the point she's trying to make. she doesnt hate regina and the plastics because theyre girly, she hates them cause theyre fake, or "shiny fake and hard" as damian puts it lol

@@killerdiva7771 i wouldnt call it backstabbing. regina knows janice hates her so its not like she would feel any betrayal once she finds out janice conspired against her, not like she felt with cady. and yeah her whole revenge plan doesnt make her a good person either, but i think her song focuses more on the pettiness of girl fights. janice is far past petty, shes out for revenge (and tbh how would you even go about a revenge plan without being underhanded lol), but thats a flaw within itself. my original argument was going against the idea that she has the mentality of a girl who thinks shes "not like other girls". thats a very specific type of person which i still dont think janice is. at the very least i dont think she should be hated any more than a person should hate regina.

Obviously I don't know for sure, but there's a possibility that the quick panning shot at 3:34 MIGHT have been used to disguise a cut. The best thing about this scene was the way they incorporated Regina's bus accident into it. On the whole the film wasn't a patch on the original (and mercifully it wasn't trying to be), but there were odd bits of it that were done better than the original, and Regina being hit by the bus hit so much harder in this version because it was much more believable. as much hate as janis is getting in this version, i personally like this version of janis better. yes, she still is a mean girl just like the others, but she isn’t exactly mean. she did manipulate and use cady, but in her eyes she also genuinely saw cady as a friend and was just doing what she saw fit to get revenge on the person who hurt her AND cady, which it seems more to me like regina hurting cady is even more motivation for janis in this version. also, janis did warn cady several times to avoid regina before cady willingly started hanging out with them in this version, and janis didn’t technically use cady’s heartbreak against regina, cady WANTED to get back at regina, and so did janis, it was a shared plot of revenge at that point.

Janis' mean streak/rude tendencies shows better here than what I saw on stage. Because the point is that she is also mean, regardless of the bullying. They're all mean girls. She doesn't hold up to Barrett Wilbert Weed's voice, but I wasn't expecting anyone to. It works better. Still not as good as the original monologue, but I wasn't expecting that either. So your best friend screwed you over Acted nice when she not nice Well, I have some advice 'Cause it's happened to me twice Here's my secret strategy It always works because The world doesn't end It just feels like it does So raise your right finger And solemnly swear Whatever they say about me I don't care I won't twist in knots to join your game I will say, "You make me mad" And if you treat me bad I'll say, "You're bad" And if I eat alone from this moment on That's just what I'll do 'Cause I'd rather be me, I'd rather be me I'd rather be me than be with you We're supposed to all be ladies And be nurturing and care Is that really fair? Boys get to fight, we have to share Here's the way that that turns out We always understand How to slap someone down With our underhand So here's my right finger To how girls should behave 'Cause sometimes what's meant to break you Makes you brave So I will not act all innocent I won't fake apologise Let's just fight and then make up Not tell these lies Let's call our damage even Clean the slate 'til it's like new It's a new life for me Where I'd rather be me I'd rather be me Than be with you I'll say, "No" (no) I'll say, "Knock it off with your notes and your rules and your games" And those sycophants who follow you I'll remember all their names And when they drag you down Like they inevitably do I will not laugh along with them and Approve their palace coup, 'cause that's not me (Janis, Janis, Janis, Janis) I don't need their good opinions I have plenty of opinions Everybody has opinions but it doesn't make them true What's true is being me And I'd rather be me I'd rather be me than be with you So raise them high 'cause playing nice and shy is insulting my IQ (Yeah, yeah, yeah) I'd rather be me (I'd rather be me) I'd rather be me (I'd rather be me) I'd rather be me than be with you (I'd rather be me) I'd rather be me (I'd rather be me) I'd rather be me (I'd rather be me) I'd rather be me than be with you
Are we not gonna talk about the girl playing a bass like a guitar?

Idk who he is but you’re kinda right 😂😂
I love the mean MOANA 😂
This song is amazing
She don’t even go here😂😂
I realized the whole point of the blocking for this was to represent Janis was moving forward with her life. That's why Cady and Regina's scene before the accident is in the background. Janis doesn't want to be like them anymore (yes, she does owe Cady an apology for her behavior, btw)
I love Damian's silent support this entire song.
I feel like the musical adds more movie time
Itzy: Wannabe 👍
Do all those teachers just have a major case of déjà vu?
dooooooo someone gets hurt
Love how most of the number is once shot
4:43 LOL Damien’s face 😂
I needed this today my “best friend” literally screwed me over and this song is literally what I need. She is literately Regina George with my other two “friends” being her Gretchen and Karen. And another poor girl being her Cady. My and my sister are both Janice
Janis finally got to see Regina get hit by a bus!
Middle finger: You're welcome.
Are they acting bad on purpose or does it just come naturally
I love this movie so much and I got the vinyl last night
Acted nice when she not nice...wow great lyrics
0:39 She don’t even go here!!!!!
Moana decided to leave her island and living the high school life
Yes she my favorite
I dont need your good opinions I got plenty of opinions Every a**hole has opinions But it doesn’t make them true. Wow. Such profound lyrics.
typical regina, just couldn’t let janis have her moment 🤣
"and im sorry i repeated it now" SHE MADE IT JUST SO LIKE THE ORIGINAL ONE
I just realized, was Regina gonna angrily walk into the forest, or trees i guess, at the end there?
“Walk away turd” is forever stuck in my head now at 4:25
Imagine if it was Janis who got hit by the bus lol the ultimate Mean Girls plot twist xD

I'd honestly love that. It'd be such a shock cause we'd be expecting it to be Regina
