GREAT TIP-the cheap winders with steel shafts are the best to modify. Surprisingly a lot have the same outer diameter but different innards. With a pair of pliers Remove the Press-button ( press-fit and all the same diameter) Now you can interchange Several press-tables with corresponding arbors left and right. So Triple the use of the set

You have to measure the winder OD of the barrel because that fits into the mainspring barrel. Measuring the ID of the winder barrel doesn't do any good because the wall thickness isn't known.

The main problem I had with the cheap sets was that I was not able to find the right combination of arbor diameter and barrel diameter. So, I modified the set to be more like the generic Bergeon set, by drilling out the holes in some of the winders to take a larger arbor. Better, but still didn't have large enough arbors for some mainsprings. So, I added #6 and #8 Bergeon arbors to give me 3.0mm and 3.5mm diameter arbors. So far, that is working out and much cheaper than the Bergeon generic set.

The Swiss are really missing an opportunity to sell to hobbyists. The their set was half of what they sell if for- more hobbyists might actually buy it- but not at the current price.

The Swiss don't like hobbyists. The amount of "gate-keeping" in this hobby is ridiculous. Swiss watch companies won't even sell you parts since at least 2015 except wildly popular movement parts that still slip through the cracks. Neither will Japanese companies officially although enough Japanese parts also slip through the cracks.

May I ask a dumb question?. I am new to the watch repair hobby. I can't find a video where anyone talks about how to tell which winder to use for your particular watch mainspring. How does this work?. I have heard they're calibre specific. Does that mean they only work for a particular movement?. Like fancy Swiss movement and the like?. Here's what I mean: I have an inexpensive Bulova Caravelle lady's watch I am servicing for a friend. How do I know which winder to use?. Do these inexpensive Chinese sets work for that?. Or do you have to buy Bulova/Caravelle specific winders?. Or does it go off of the diameter of the barrel in the watch and matching it to the correct sized winder?. I have questions and mostly all I find is critiques of quality over Bergeon and not how to use them. I sure can't afford those Bergeon winders, so one of these sets is what I would have to go with. Thanks for the video.

The reality is they’re used on a “nearest best fit” basis. As long as the winder fits into the barrel and doesn’t have too big a gap in diameter you can use it. Some calibres of these winders are meant for specific watch barrel calibres, but naturally you can’t find a set with a winder for every single watch barrel in existence- that would require several hundred winders!

you need calipers to measure the inner diameter of the barrel and the width of the mainspring

Hi are they both works left and right handle mainspring ?

No. They have a uni-directional hook which is ridiculous. They should have a pin on the arbor to grab the hole in the spring either direction and not a hook. Flipping a wound spring around to the proper direction is a pain in the azz, too. It's all ridiculous and way harder than it has to be.

Winders work with any caliber so long as the winding barrels fit into mainspring barrel with minimal play.

Hobbyists are working hard on 3D printed winders that will be cheap AND good and more universal. I can't wait until these overpriced Swiss chumps get a reality price check on the Swiss winders. Everyone knows that even the genuine Swiss ones cost only a few dollars to make if they would just drop their prices a little......
