The Japanese desperately want to strengthen the Yen. Tonight would be a hilarious night for the BOJ to raise rates.
@mattsoca1
Ай бұрын
Actually you're incorrect, they are quite happy with the value of the yen. Income from exports are higher when the value of the yen is low, so record profits for exporters is a common occurrence. Moreover, companies (Japanese and foreign) are returning production to Japan, and this is accelerating provided they can continue "keeping" the value of the yen depressed for "a while". Japan has had negative interest rates since 2016 (meaning, depositors needed to pay interest to the institutions to "park" their cash). At the end of last month, the negative rates were very recently abandoned for 0% interest. The overriding reason for the relatively weak yen is primarily because of the interest rate differential between Japan and the rest of the world. When Japan raises the interest above 0%, the yen will gain strength, especially if the US Fed begins to lower interest rates. Eventually,, the yen will gain strength, which will somewhat export profits. There were benchmark levels for the yen versus the dollar for the last 65 years (mind you, the US counterpart to the yen is a penny; where for us, we price in terms of a dollar). In the early 60's, the yen was 360 to 1 US dollar. With industrialization, the yen gained strength. As the yen was allowed to "float" in January 1973, it fell to 300 per US dollar. Over time it gained strength to 160, then 130, and in October 2011, it reached its highest point at 72 yen per US dollar. which cause immense problems for exports as it made Japanese products extremely expensive. I am an American currently living in Japan conducting research. If anything, the exporting companies do not want the yen to gain strength. Japanese companies are "sitting" on a mountain of cash, and would prefer only minor changes in the value of the yen (contrary to competing US companies that want the value of the yen to rise, hence making Japanese products more expensive). And since at least 1960, the Japanese unemployment rate has averaged about 3% (it currently is about 2.5%, and there are more unfilled job positions than unemployed). So, there has not been any real incentive for the Japanese government to want change, including the value of the yen. For the most part, the Japanese have been "fully employed" (economists consider an unemployment rate of 5% to be fully employed) for at least 60 years. One final thought - the Japanese Yen and the Swiss Franc are the two most desired stable "safe haven currencies". Curiously, the Japanese government essentially wishes this were not the case for the yen.
@GrantDWilliams82
Ай бұрын
@@mattsoca1 Actually it's you who is incorrect - and your long-winded explanation of elementary school FX is pretentious and condescending. Everything that you parroted *used* to be true, when accumulating Dollars from exporting to America was worth it. That was true for like 60 years, but it hasn't be true for the last 15. Dollars are no longer an asset. They're a liability. Japan's major imports - raw materials - are all at or near all-time highs in the currency that they're purchased with (which really just means that the value of the Dollar has never been able to purchase less of them).
@mattsoca1
Ай бұрын
@@GrantDWilliams82 I suspected you might say that. The condescension is in your "weakly thought out" conjecture, and far more likely, someone calling you out on that. As I state again, I am in Japan conducting research. This has included discussions with economists, business leaders, and a few government officials. What you obviously fail to understand is that when the dollar was even stronger (at least 160 yen to the dollar), Japan still tallied huge foreign exchange surpluses (which also caused political problems for them). Japan does still run surpluses in certain high tech and industrial areas like vehicles, but a significant amount of their industrial base has relocated outside of the country. And this has been worrisome for the government, business leaders, etc. Having so much production abroad, also means less control, as the Coronavirus virus pandemic showed. Data from the last 2 years indicate a fair amount of that "offshoring" is returning home (as well as moving to countries outside of china), and also noticeable new incoming foreign investment. While Japan's trade surpluses with the US are not as large as in the past, the US still runs deficits. In 2023, the US had a $71 billion deficit with Japan. Something that I have cogently learned while here, is that the Japanese take a long-term view, unlike most others. They recognize the "situation" and firmly believe that changes are necessary, and now in turn, appear very much to be making the needed alterations. Their "policy" on the yen, is just one way of achieving their goals. You apparently also fail to understand that most of the weakness of the Japanese yen is because of the previous negative interest rate policy of the Japanese Central Bank (JCB), in concert with the relatively high interest rate in the United States and other countries, and the JCB fully recognizes this situation. Who wants to invest in Japanese bonds/savings when they have to pay an interest charge to park cash, receiving zero interest? Now that the JCB has eliminated the negative interest rate, at least one can buy a bond without paying a fee for that "privilege", albeit with zero accrued interest. Furthermore, if the Japanese authorities were truly concerned about the value of their currency, they could have, and can intervene far more than the few times in the past several years. In fact, I sort of remember that the last time was in October 2022. But as a few "experts" informed me, the "reshoring" of the industrial base by Japanese and foreign companies has been proceeding at a pace that is desired and beneficial for Japan. So, they have overriding reasons NOT to defend the yen. The only real risk is that other countries aren't happy that the yen is relatively weak, such as the US with a negative balance of trade. Make no mistake, the Japanese can defend the yen. They hold more than a trillion dollars of US government debt alone. And Japanese companies are estimated to have high amounts of savings abroad from external corporate profits. It would actually make sense for monies held abroad to be repatriated back to Japan given the current value of the yen (though in the case of businesses, I believe this means there are also tax consequences in Japan), but this is not occurring. In time, every financial expert says the yen will rise, especially when the JCB increases the interest rate above the just enacted 0%, and the US Central Bank lowers our interest rate. However, other major reasons the Japanese are so not inclined to defend the yen is because they have full employment (a situation they have had since the late 60's); in reality, there is a serious labor shortage. And the citizens have a high amount of savings. Using data from 2022, the average Japanese family had over $130,000 in savings, whereas the average American family had $8,000. (The total amount of personal savings in Japan is massive, which is the primary reason American banks have wanted access to that cash hoard for more than 30 years.) Add to that the fact that although consumer prices in Japan have risen a bit recently, they have largely remained the same for the last 20+ years. All of the aforementioned facts (which are very verifiable) were reasons cited to me as to why the Japanese authorities are "NOT DESPERATE" to strengthen the yen, especially if it serves to reinvigorate their industrial base at home. So my final recommendation.......always obtain the full facts before writing or speaking. That way you won't look ignorant. And especially be careful about who you call out. You never know whether someone else knows even more than you do.
These corrupt people think that they are above God. The same goes to fools who do censorship.

It is a state dinner that doubles as a fundraiser. Be sure to vote in November, everybody.
This is Absolutely Disgraceful! No Law, No Accountability and No One's Stopping it! I have lost all trust and respect for the Government, News Media and Politicians both Democrat and Republican!

All retired oldies people no interest for them at all.
What a tacky look for the entrance to a state dinner. Reporters lining the entrance couldn’t be a worse look. It has all the earmarks of planning by “bag lady”, Jill Biden.

Reminds me of Melanoma's red Xmas trees jammed into that hallway. Then her friend recording her saying she hated Christmas. I'll take Dr. Jill any day.

The 99 Cents stores, nation-wide, restaurant's franchise; especially in California are closing, together with many others are closing up for good in USA. The grossly unfair and inequitable condition, distribution of wealth, opportunity in USA need reforming and changing, ASAP.
This parade is ridiculous ! Just get in and don’t let the others wait.
The world is in chaos. Everyone is throwing party and unmasked 😷
