Just recently saw Joe Rohan talking about how he didn’t understand why anybody would pay a lot of money for a watch. His guest on the podcast was a watch lover and pretty much took him on a tour of everything watch making live. Joe went from “I own a g-shock and it tells the time” to “I might have to buy that 50k watch it’s phenomenal”

It hurts how little Nico knows about Seiko and Grand Seiko. even if you refuse to go quartz the 9SA5 is a 36000 VPH 80hr power reserve movement using an in house design for the escapement. and all GS watches are hand assembled... sounds to me like Grand Seiko is upholding traditional watchmaking more than rolex, while still innovating at the same time.

@@mmcallery even if it isn't super obvious: most larger watch brands continue to innovate, because they need a unique selling point, whether it is spring drive (Seiko), co-axial escapement (Omega), using silicon (ulysse nardin), use of ceramics in watch cases (Rado), etc. Sure, most of these innovations aren't necessary in the age of smartwatches, but they're all cool nonetheless, especially if they come from "dogshit brands", IMO.

Grand Seiko's claim to fame isn't just the spring drive/smooth seconds hand; it's also the fact that their hand finishing, craftsmanship, and inspired dials are worlds above Rolex and *every* other brand on the planet for the price. You can get a Grand Seiko with objectively better fit and finish for $5k than you can from other manufacturers in $15k+ range.

Honest Question: My father was a mechanic for over 30 years, and he retired so he bought himself a swiss army watch, because he kept working mildly. No more pulling wrenches, but he did do home improvement stuff and didn't want his phone in his pocket... which sadly cost more than the watch at the time. Is there any watch in this kind of use-case-scenario that you would recommend? Recently it has become damaged and repaired unsuccessfully twice, so he's not wearing it even though he loves the watch. I think he paid around $500 CAD for it back in the day. It lasted probably 5-10 years before he had to have it 'repaired' the first time.

To be fair to Joe Rogan, 5 minutes fast in 3 months is around 3 seconds fast a day, completely within Rolex standards, and actually pretty accurate.

@@PrinceofPain1776 You are right, it's cosc standard, not out of the box Rolex standards, but a 5 year old Rolex will be 3 seconds fast very easily, and if you take it to Rolex for regulation every time it is 1 seconds faster than spec it will be a very expensive owning experience, plus the argument still stands 2 seconds fast is still a minute fast a month, in a few months it will be a few minutes fast, and just so you know there are plenty of out of the box Rolex that are 3 seconds fast, and if you take it to regulate because of 1 second you probably won't have another call from your AD this decade.

@@bighands69 That's the acceptable range, it is not +2 one day - 2 the other, if your watch is - 2 seconds a day, chances are that it will keep the same trend until you regulate it, to be fair it can change if you let it rest in a different position at night, and there's some variation depending on what you do, but mechanical watches will just keep getting more and more distant from the correct time if you don't set the proper time, and the older the watch is the faster this will happen, until you regulate it, that's how mechanical watches work.

"After a couple months it's like 5 minutes fast" A C.O.S.C. certified mechanical watch must not be slower than 4 seconds or faster than 6 seconds per day. A watch that is 6 seconds fast per day would be 180 seconds (3 min) fast per month. I think that Rolex watches are being built to a higher accuracy standard, but even a watch that is only 3 seconds fast per day would be 6 minutes fast after 4 months. So Rogan is actually 100% correct here.

There are different levels of watch collectors though. There are normal people that collect watches without making it the focus of their entire life, they are not obsessed with it, they simply have a collection. Then there are the strange ones that are absolutely obsessed and practically make it the focus of their life, they know every single detail about every watch at first glance. I think those were the types Joe was making fun of, the ones that take it extremely seriously.

Okay, Head up about Rolex Accuracy. the Test for accuracy and its certification is taken when the mainspring is fully wound. Yes. Then the Chronometer (time grapher) measures the beat error, frequency and angular displacement of the balance. When you own a rolex, you rarely wind it fully. As if runs down (lesser main spring tension) the escapement runs slightly faster......hence...the need to adjust it every so often.

So to answer your question, no Joe is not a diver. In one of his podcasts, he mentioned that he loves wearing dive watches because he uses the bezel to keep time when someone is on stage at an event. And to be fair, I use my Diver watch for the same purpose. Sure I can ask Siri to turn on the timer on my iPhone, but keeping time on using a bezel is just pure class.
