What - if any - protagonist in a piece of media do you find the most frustrating for how the narrative chooses to frame their choices?

Obviously there are many versions of Batman but I don't feel there is enough Batman media that frames Batman as immoral for his no killing rule when it comes to the joker. Especially cause he ALWAYS escapes and ALWAYS harms more people. It's framed like some sort of debate whereas I see it as immoral inaction. (Like an Olympic swimmer not saving a drowning child in a pool) It's clearly the wrong choice done for selfish reasons but I haven't read the comics so I may be off on how it's commonly portrayed but I haven't seen it shown like that in any extended media.

I unfortunately can't shed any light on that for you, since I don't read comics myself. But it would certainly be an interesting idea to present. I DO know there are plenty of versions of Batman who are critiqued for those reasons. Even the Arkham games version is pretty heavily critiqued for it. But how well they do so, isn't something I could say for sure. What I can say is that they pretty consistently criticize him for effectively creating a lot of his own villains, like Two-Face, fueling Joker's obsession with him, the Arkham Knight, etc.

@@LibraScope See, the funny thing is 9 out 10 times that critique is wrong. Batman doesn't create any of his villains. All of his rouge gallery usually blame batman for their own poor decisions.

@@thereseemstobeenanerror1219 That's fair. He's had so many villains over the years, that I'm sure most of them aren't that way. But also, even if the villains are just blaming him for their own actions, it can still be worth noting that the story presents the idea, you know?

@@dillonrafferty4717then he can kill Riddler, Two Face and etc. if the line is someone is gonna kill people, all of his rogues gallery kills people so should he off killer croc too? Batman isn’t the law. He puts them into the judicial system to get justice. The system is at fault not him.

Great video, glad I found this channel, hope you keep it up you deserve a lot more attention. glad I'm not the only one who had these issues with Watch Dogs. too many people focus on the E3 bait and switch, while sure not great but there's so much worse in the final product they delivered. Ubisoft games stories often have these issues they touch on real issues but too scared to actually say anything of value you end up with these bizarre characters like Aiden.

Glad you liked the video, and I really appreciate you taking the time to watch it. And yeah, while some Ubisoft games succeed more than others in this regard (and while I feel like in my experience WD1 might be the worst), there's an unfortunate pattern of them trying to say more than most other games, and rarely committing to it. I feel like it's most likely publisher pushback against the developers, who want to do more. But that's just an assumption.

So high quality for such a small channel. There is a lot of media out there that struggles under close scrutiny like this. I know you could have some heinous messaging but put it in a song and id jam to it especially when I can only parse half the words.

Thanks! Glad you liked the video, and I really appreciate you giving it a watch. And yeah, I know what you mean about music. I'm very much a music first, lyrics third or fourth type of person. So half the time I don't know what the music I'm listening to is about unless someone else asks, or something specific catches my attention, lol.

Well, that is the subtle thing about life. Sometimes, bad people do bad things and get away with it, just because. It's probably not what the devs had in mind for their game, but it is what it is. And, given the things you were looking for in regard to the 'subtleties' of game morality, I wonder if Spec Ops the Line or Kane and Lynch would be more of your kind of 'moral' game.

Nope karma system has effect on gameplay. If you steal car and your reputations is bad civilians will call police and even if they spot you they will call police

Fun fact, according to the head writer they wanted you dislike Aden. Because apparently the writers were aiming to make Aidan the Heisenberg of Video game protagonists. Supposedly anyway, they only said this after the game released and people were dragging Aidan over the coals for his behavior. So this clarification feel suspect.

I absolutely believe that they wanted you to dislike him to some degree. To me, I get the impression there were either conflicting writers, or publisher demands that messed it up. It feels like the original plan was indeed to paint him as a really rough, toxic character. But one that you can ultimately sympathize with, because his selfish and hostile actions create a wealth of strife for him, and he WANTS to do better but doesn't know how. But - and this is totally just speculation on my part - it almost feels like Ubisoft execs or something wanted a franchise out of the idea, which is harder to pull off if you end the first game with your character admitting that they're kinda trash. So it feels like they tried to pull it into that more overt 'Batman-esque' direction, and the team simply didn't have the time or resources to properly rewrite it, leading to an inconsistent mess where both versions of Aiden fighting for attention. Because taken in isolation, there are plenty of moments in the game that would work rather well, if he wasn't championed so often. Like... it's enough to make me wonder just how many significantly WORSE things Aiden might have been set up to do, before (again, speculatively) they had to cut it down and fill it with 'superhero origin story' stuff instead. Then again, judging by how poorly people have reacted to OTHER stories in games where you're ultimately supposed to sympathize with, but not be completely in-tune with a dark, tragic character, who knows if they could've pulled it off in a way that made the larger gaming market happy. Also, thanks so much for watching the video!

I a lot disagree with you and what you sad. Aiden is not sociopath... sociopath are impulsive Aiden is strategic fact he uses manipulation because he learn from psychology and you would know this info if you would hear Aiden audio logs. Aiden is Machiavellian. What is that? Person who rely on strategy, manipulation wants power but no fame. He has empathy and he blames himself for Lena death I much more see that you see things the wrong way then you think. Aiden actions are justify because of not Machiavellianism but PTSD. Aiden actions being a vigilanty is not because blow-off steam like you sad but it's because of his defence mechanism (Rationalisation, Displacement and Sublimation). You mention about hearing Aiden thoughts. If not those his thoughts it would much more harder to justify his action and analyse him from psychology perspective and seeing his Machiavellian way of thinking. In my opinion Aiden is good written character from psychology perspective but most players are not psychologist and that's why Aiden is not understood like you sad that you thought he was a narcissist and later you were saying that he is sociopath. Even it's possible to have both these conditions you don't understand clearly those terms. You mention that he thinks himself as a batman. NOPE. He sad 'they will have something to fear' and he goes to destroy other gangs and organisation. He doesn't say 'I'm Batman'. Being a vigilenty doesn't mean being Batman. Punisher, Wednesday, Jessica Jones would you called them Batman even if they act also on being vigilenty and still killing people? You mention about Aiden not having consequences for his actions but the think is he tries to archive his goals and stay low on radar so very often nobody knows who was responsible for action like Bedbug going to server room or using Helena to track Angelo. I just think you clearly hate character that you made up stuff witch is very often visible if someone you have you made up thinking the worst about him.
