I have only ever arrived at Wat Arun by boat. There is something almost regal about approaching it from the water and stepping off on the pier and walking through the entrance with the main wat framed by the entranceway. I did not even know there was a whole bustling metropolitan area out the back gate. I thought it was just uninhabited swampland back there. Wat Arun is my one go-to place every time I visit Bangkok-- I always make one trip to Wat Arun in the early morning. And no matter how many hundreds of photos I have taken of this wat from every possible angle, I still find myself taking photos of it when I arrive. There is just that awesome majestic quality about it. And I always find the best souvenir t-shirts at the shops on the temple grounds. Not your usual "I heart Bangkok" tees with English words on them, but shirts with actual Thai script on them that actually look like they come from Thailand.

I agree, you can use the MRT to Wat Arun. It's not too far to walk. When the walkway (river view) along the river from the Memorial Bridge to Wat Kalayanamit (near Wat Arun) is finished, some people may like to walk along the river to Wat Arun.

How true about not seeing the sights when you live in a city. I lived in Bangkok in the mid 80's and only saw a fraction of what it had to offer. I finally saw the Grand Palace, Bang Pa In, and Ayutthaya as well as Chiang Mai when I went back in 2002 and 2004. I have a very long list for my next visit (2024) thanks to your videos as well as Bangkok Pat's. Thank you!

I enjoy your Wat Arun tour, thank you. I think came in with the boat is more enjoyable than take tuk tuk as from the river you can see Wat Arun from the far distance which is much more beautiful as you can see most of the main part of Wat Arun (the spike) from the river view which I could imagine how it would be like back in 1851 which most transportation was by the river.

We came here back in Jan, our son loved all the old sites. We took a train then a boat over. The history of how the Chinese statues arrived at Wat Arun and other temples. I love it. They needed as you said to weigh down boats on trade routes. It’s interesting to see how they had survived so long. We love the lions with the stone ball in their mouths. When we came back in 2013 we were able to climb up higher on the steep stairs. It was quite scary so maybe it is a good thing they shut that part off now.

Temple of Dawn is amongst my Top 5 destinations to visit while in Bangkok. Also, the way it’s lit up at night is truly stunning and can be enjoyed while on a nice Chao Phraya River boat cruise. Greetings from Chicago. Still recovering after a 30 hour Bangkok to Chicago via Seoul (6 hour layover) commute and a jet lag nagging of a twelve hour time zone difference is still being felt. Awesome video!

Thanks Jeroen. Always good seeing you. I love Wat Arun! Especially when arriving by 'orange flag' public boat. But my absolute favorite temple in Bangkok without doubt is The Golden Mount, Wat Saket. The view from hotel Sala Rattanakosin in the evening is so magical (I remember your video from 2 years ago when you were doing a mini-series on rooftop bars), especially when they had that large terrace back then by the Chao Phraya. Nice memories.

Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Arun and Wat Pho are crowded with tourists. If you want to see the beauty of Thai architecture in a peaceful area, go to Wat Suthat, Wat Ratchabophit, Wat Bowonniwet, and many more. Many royal temples have no entrance fee for foreigners.

I like to use the tuk tuk for short distances, but being three wheels I worry about taking it further. I let my Thai wife flag them down, we get a better price. I like to use them during rainstorms to get from the skytrain to the house, I can see and feel the spray of the rain without getting too wet. Thanks for the info on the tuk tuk.

I need to also admit that the price increase for this temple was incredible. It was 10 baht before. Then became 20. Then 50. Now a full hundred. It is unique but you can see it clearly from the river or around the sois. TAT is gouging out tourists. Same thing in Wat Pho. Entry was 50 baht. Then 100. Now 200. Grand Palace was 200. Then 400. Now it is a ridiculous 500 THB for a palace where you can visit only 20% of land as everything is locked behind walls. That is considerably a day of a hotel room cost in the city. So when you visit all of these temples a day you already cashed out 1000 THB. When a few years back you could do for quarter of it. INSANE. Also in the video 100 THB is around 3 dollars or 2,5 EUR. I know it is not comparable to other European cities but still feel we pay way over for all for this.
