Yeah we need ranked choice voting. And yeah we can vote third party, it's a way to indirectly let everybody know which candidate and policies are better

Yang Gang -> RFK Jr I'm excited to attend the Hudson Valley Ideas fest and hear you speak! The last time I saw you speak was February 2020 on the last stretch of your campaign. Thank you for sparking my interest and hope in politics. Now I am involved in my first campaign effort to get RFK on the ballot in NY. Is there any chance of Ranked Choice Voting for NYS for the November election? There are so many people who wont vote for RFK for the same reason that Greg is describing.

I've heard this logic in real life so much. Thank you for exploring this topic. That's why a third party cannot thrive right now. So much hate between Democrats and Republicans that the small third party decides to vote for mentioned parties because the "lesser of two evils"

In fact, both parties are historically unpopular. You are right it's a negative politics environment. What you're wrong about is that either party has popular politics. The result? Most people think both parties are garbage. And, a minority of radicalized partisans think otherwise. The radicalized partisans aren't the smart ones, if you talk to both the partisans and the cynics. Jan 6 looked like it did for a reason. People that believe in Trump are total rejects. Same with true believers in Biden. Because, of course, believing this nonsense makes you look like you're very credulous.

You just need to start on the local level. Once you’ve built up your support in multiple communities, you can then work your way up to the state level.

Having a two party system seems to be a direct consequence of the voting system. The same thing happens in the UK with the Tories and Labour, which is the electoral system the USA's is based on. Sure, you could change the voting laws in every state in every election to allow other parties... I think there's a much easier way to address this one! First, recognize that neither party is especially ideological. You can run unorthodox ideology within either party. Second, both parties are private, so you can change their internal workings without changing a single law! (This is a weak point in the security of American democracy.) As far as I can tell, you could organize the Democrats as a coalition of Liberals, Socialists and Greens, and the Republicans as a coalition of Conservatives, Libertarians and Christian Nationalists, as long as the sub parties agree to address their differences in the primaries. This is the shortest path to a multi party democracy in America. Because of the private party system, it could actually happen fairly quickly. It's going to require opening up and popularizing the primaries, and getting voters used to two rounds of voting. (Don't expect anyone in power to tell you the shortest path to change.)

Worse than voting for someone who doesn't have a chance to win? For me it's voting for someone I don't want, and they win! Between two unacceptable choices, I'll take the third choice every time. Remove that third choice, and I'll just not bother to vote.

I don’t know I’m not voting this year because I’m not voting for Trump and I’m not voting for Biden. I’m disappointed that Dean Phillips dropped out. I was going for him, but I don’t have no faith in any parts of our government no more. I’m just gonna live my life like I have been and avoid anything voting related because my vote Scott gonna make a difference anyway like every otherperson vote isn’t gonna make a difference. They gonna run no matter what we think about it. They’re the ones running.

We need to unite as 3rd party voters. You might not agree with RFK on some issues, but he’s the best chance we’ve had in a very long time to beat the two party system loop. Putting him in office will open up the door for independents to win much more easily in the future. West and Stien will probably pull 10% of the vote together. If that was added to RFK’s vote he would win and the chance for people like West to win in the future would increase drastically.

Part of the problem is the quality of third party candidates too though. I like Robert Kennedy Jr.'s principles, many of his ideals, But when it comes to substantive understanding of many key issues- He is massively misinformed, In the case of The Ukraine he is dangerously misinformed. And he lacks the humility to understand that It's not going to be until he gets into office that he's going to have the full picture of our military operations. I would love to vote for a third party candidate, But there's no point in voting third party if that party's quality isn't substantially better than the two horse race. And as much as I like the idea surrounding ranked voting, that too is open to problems like mob rule. It's essentially a popular vote. And popular votes are vulnerable to cults of personality. And it is cult of personality that are the single most dangerous issue on the face of this planet right now. Cult of personality are driving division here at home, cults of personality have taken over Nations like China and India. And it's an issue that gets zero attention.
