Wasp Infestation Uncovers Something Scary In Her Shed

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm not a big fan of clowns or baby dolls. Something creepy about them that I just don't get. But to each their own.
Today I got a call from a friend that shed had found honey bees flying in and out of her shed out back. They had been know to be there for about 2 years. That would make for a really gigantic bee hive and I was all stoked to go see what see had going on.
When I got there it seemed everything started to go sideways. I walked up to inspect the issue and immediately knew what we had, YELLOW JACKET WASPS.
The customer was amazed. She had no idea they were actually wasps and glad she hadn't messed with them. Southern Yellow jackets can be pretty pissy little bugs. But it made no matter to me, I was up for the challenge and couldn't wait to dig into this hive.
I could see the nest but couldn't tell what all was in the box. It was sitting in a bigger box and had no description to what was in it. It didn't matter much at that point because they wasp had to go.
After getting everything started I uncovered what was in the box. I have to admit it freaked me out just a bit. The first thing I focused on was a big bright set of eyes looking back at me..... oh heck no! It gave me chills for just a second I have to admit. But I am Yappy ( Waspman?) and if I can remove thousands of bees and wasp from anything, I can deal with a crazy eyes looking at me right?
The second thing that amazed me about this removal was the amount of queens it had. I've seen more than one many times but 31!!!! WOW, I couldn't believe it. That makes me wonder if this nest was primed to infested more in that area come spring. I'm glad she caught this before things got out of hand and maybe it helped keep those in her area safe in the future.

@@1krani wasps aren’t little a-holes that just want to ruin your day. They’re very good for the environment. They take care of pests in the area they build their nests. Before I watched hornet king I didn’t know how beneficial they are. They typically only attack if they feel threatened. Sometimes you kicked something they were foraging on. As for their nests, If you thought your house was being attacked I don’t think you’d react too kindly either. Not to mention the larvae inside the nest are their food sources since the adults can’t eat solid food. The larvae make a byproduct that the adults can drink. They also drink nectar from flowers so they help with pollination. I just give them their space. They normally won’t bother you. I can count the number of times I’ve been stung on one hand and I can count the number of times I was absolutely at fault on one hand too. One landed on my shoulder and I hit it against my skin and got stung. The other time I must have stepped on one I didn’t see when waiting for the teacher to let us into class. The only other time was the first time ever when I used to catch bugs and observe them then let them go. I didn’t catch one very well and I learned a good lesson. And only one of those stings was when I wasn’t a child.

From watching Hornet King's videos, I gather that an active yellowjacket colony in an area with plentiful foraging will produce over 100 queens in a season, each of which will then be the foundress of a new colony. Ah! I feel you pain! When we lived in Pinson, we got up early and we’re leaving to head to our first Talladega race ever! Leaving our drive way my hubs backing out hit this bush in the drive way… (new home) so I jumped out to see if he scratched the car real quick, and the dry dead bush (little did I know) was just a HUGE yellow jacket nest underneath!! I took over 18 stings to the nose and mouth and then the nurse lost count on the amount on my hands, arms, legs, chest and head. They ATTACKED with a PASSION! I wanted to die! I was in so much pain. And being allergic to bees (my last ever bee sting I had a bad reaction several years before) I seriously thought I would die. So we dealt with it all super quick, drove the the ER down the road. I ended up with a Tetanus shot, Antibiotic shot, and a shot like benedryl. Luckily was not allergic. But was so swollen from it! It was CRAZY! AND had to miss our race that day. Needless to say I was terrified to park in our driveway for MONTHS. I park on the street. I was terrified on the driveway - til he finally poured gas down the hole at night and lit it on fire! Never had another issue after that!

Looking at a few videos from your channel off a random recommendation, it looks like bees you treat with the utmost care (which is not surprising giving the vital nature) but I do ask, wasps and thier other variations, is killing generally the best option? Is there ever a point to trying to save and relocate them or is the danger they provide, not just to humans but other insects if I recall, overwhelming to any assistance they provide to the ecosystem?

  • @YappyBeeman

There is no safe solution in relocation wasps that I have found yet. They are very aggressive when defending their nest and its just not safe. Good question.

My grandfather was a strange one. He was 1/2 Native American so he treated all living things with respect, even wasps and snapping turtles. When they moved to FL, he’d sit on his carport watching the birds and butterflies and whatnot and he had a pet wasp. I swear to God! It was a big ol’ black one and it lived under his chair. Since I’d spent so much time with him, I wasn’t afraid of it either. We’d sit there for hours and it would just fly up and hang out on his arm. It never stung either of us. He told me it’s because we weren’t afraid, it wasn’t either. They smell our pheromones just as Yappy can smell the bee’s pheromones. If they smell fear, they’ll attack and he said that’s true of any animal. I believe him because I’ve seen it over and over. That’s why people like Steve Irwin could play with anything pretty much. He was never afraid of them. If you can control your fear, you’re better off than if you can’t.

Have you ever considered something bigger than a shop vac? I'm talking a small 110v woodshop dust collector. It would have a larger 4" hose with greater suction and a steel impeller would spell doom for those hornets.

I will never understand how humans can declare one species as wonderful & precious, and another one as an annoying pest. Wasps have an important role in the ecosystem. Being predators, they hunt many other insect species that we consider pests. They are the lions of the insect world. And yes, they sting of course, but so would you if you were so small & vulnerable. I think they are amazing fierce warriors, and they have my respect. I take macro pictures, and I have been less than 2 feet away from a European hornet nest in the wild, and was not aggressed in any way. Why can't these wasps be taken away with the same care as the bees, and let free somewhere in the wild? I wish people would appreciate the amazingness in all life on this planet.

  • @YappyBeeman

I respect your view of their beauty. Problem 1, you can't rehome them like bees. Problem 2, they destroy what they move into. That's just part of the issues.

  • @Bee-28

    @Bee-28

@@YappyBeeman Thanks for replying, I really appreciate that! Love watching you btw, I can feel the love you have for the bees. If you say you can't rehome them, do you mean they will not try to rebuild if they were in a new place with their queen? If they built their hive around an object, couldn't you just move the whole object? Slightly off topic: I am not naive, i know that it's not all roses; I live in rural France, and the invading Asian Hornet population has just exploded in recent years. I see more nests every season. They are much more agressive than our mild-mannered European hornets & decimate native insect populations.

When I was about 3 my dad used to work in Germany at a big construction and they were living in barracks. We visited him in winter and there was a dysfunctional washing machine on the terrace that I played with. At the end of summer we went back to visit him and I wanted to play with the washing machine, it was still there. Only there was a giant yellow jacket nest on the inside. They were really not happy about me being there. I got stung so many times and I am deathly afraid of them to this day eventhough I'm not allergic. Just watching this gave me anxiety lol.
