I’m a Longhorn fan, but I’m actually kind of happy Washington won this. If we would have won this on that final drive, it would have felt like highway robbery. The Washington DB used perfect technique to defend the last pass of the game. 1. He played the ball (not the man). 2. He attacked the ball at the highest peak. 3. He kept his eye on the ball. If Coach DeBoer would have just handed off on 3rd down rather than trying to pass for a touchdown, keeping the clock running and forcing Texas to use their second timeout before Washington kicked their last field goal, ... this game would have never come down to this. Coaches underestimate the importance of KEEPING THE CLOCK RUNNING late in games when they have the lead. For the team that is behind, A RUNNING CLOCK IS POISON!!

  • @67L48

@@trwent To be clear, your definition of good coaching would be to take the ball out of the hands of the best player in college football and give it to the running back who averages just over 2 yards per carry? Gotcha. So, you probably loved that 2nd quarter possession where Penix threw the Huskies deep into UT territory only to have the coaching staff run the ball 4 straight times, turning it over on downs. There's a fine line between running clock and playing scared; you can't start milking the clock too soon. Teams that "play to not lose" frequently do just that, lose. You play to win and the best chance at winning is putting the ball in Penix's hands. You go for the TD on that penultimate possession and it was the right call, even if it ended up being one of the very few times that UT got pressure to disrupt the play.

  • @keithmartin7562

Longhorns fan here - Props to Washington. They showed up and showed out. I'm very disappointed in both the O and D side of things. Credit where it's due, Penix was money and the receivers deserve just as much credit. But Texas backs had some easy knock downs and possible INTs if they would have just paid attention. So many passes would have been considered "contested" but they just never made plays on the ball or receiver. The Horns offense looked good on that first scoring drive and it looked like Washington had no clue what to do defensively. I'm not sure why you don't keep doing that until it doesn't work. Keep them guessing. I don't know why we didn't run more. Didn't seem like Washington's line could stop our run game. Just weird decisions from a play calling perspective. However they bounced back well and that 4th quarter was so fun to watch. Texas finally did it all right. My takeaway is that Washington is not to be taken lightly. Penix put on a clinic, but certainly was helped by his rec core and Texas just not paying attention. The Washington run defense might get exposed by Michigan with how well Corum and co looked. Texas shot themselves in the foot for sure, but I do think these refs were being a little biased, but not intentionally. I agree with the calls against Texas, but there were so many holds that should have been called on Washington. The personal foul/block in the back recall was pretty atrocious. Texas has one of the best D lines and Washington's O line is nothing to write home about. Suddenly the Huskies O line is playing God-tier with no holding calls? But in the end, Texas lost it themselves and showed up too late. Really wish that 4th quarter could have been the whole game. Would have been fun to see both teams operating at full potential. Good luck to Washington in that Championship. Should be a good one!

Those spiral passes were amazing. Mid season weather made those bullet passes tail and a wet ball is never easy to grip. The stats never show the context. The Husky D will make up for teammates mistakes WHEN it matters. Watching Penix flat footed in pocket while he chose who was gonna get a dart thrown to (literally everywhere) was jaw dropping. Huskies rotated players on both sides of ball , How do you adjust when the guy you’re adjusting to is taking a break? They need to stop getting cute when 2 scores up , style points don’t matter anymore.

@@warrenparker8282 I think it's even less. The play clock is 40 seconds and I think it had only run for 13 seconds before they blew it dead for the injury. UW punts with about 20 seconds on the clock and Texas takes over with about 12-15 seconds remaining. On 3rd and 5, you at least try for the first down. Every time. No question. A first down ends the game and 5 yards is achievable. Punts are not guaranteed (see Michigan - MSU) and you avoid long snaps at any cost. So, you definitely run the ball with a running back. UW made some coaching blunders during the game, but this was definitely not one of them. They played this by the book and, unfortunately, got the bad side of what is usually a good rule.
