Washing My Hair With Shampoo Ginger (Zingiber zerumbet) In My Neighbor's Yard?!
Plant and human interactions fascinates me. Throughout history? Around the world? I love to learn about it.
The Shampoo Ginger plant (Zingiber zerumbet) is found in tropical areas of SE Asia, and was carried to Australia and throughout the Pacific Islands all the way to Hawaii thousands of years ago. It has since been planted in other tropical regions as an ornamental... including down the street from me!
I've heard that the Shampoo Ginger smells amazing and leaves your hair super soft. Not only that, but because of an extensive use as a medicinal plant, ginger may also help my scalp issues!
Did I make an entire video for the main purpose of rinsing my hair in the area between two houses down the street from me? Yes. Could it have been someone’s yard? Perhaps. Was it worth it? Yes.
It is such a cool plant with such cool history! And like I said, TONS of medicinal properties that have been vital for hundreds of years! Since filming this, the above-ground part of the plant is gone! I'll have to wait till next season to rinse my hair again! It really did feel wonderful on my scalp and smelled SO FRESH!
Here’s a scientific paper about all these uses:
www.hindawi.com/journals/ecam...
I’ve found the best place for concise information in this instance is actually wikipedia! Have fun, learn more! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zingibe...
And a little more about this history of the use of ginger here:
www.indepthinfo.com/ginger/his...
It’s just such a cool and amazing plant with such an extensive history! It always boggles my mind that people thousands of years ago invented farming and medicine and other structural uses using plants (and animals!) and we’re still using many of these practices today!
Well, that’s all for now!

There are many other plants that offer saponins and can be used to wash hair. Its a well known Carribbean practice and one that is highly praised. You can also use these same plants to wash clothes, dishes, and to clean your home. That's the beauty of plants; you get an abundance of holistic wealth from them to sustain your entire life

@@adrianalaflaca8471 @Allie and Coco's Science Show - I know this is an older comment thread but you can use yucca as shampoo by smashing it with a rock or a molcajete/mortar and pestle to activate the sapponins. You can also dry it after smashing it to use for later when you shower. There is another great youtube channel called Navajo Grandma where she shows the whole process and the history of using yucca as shampoo in Navajo culture. If you're interested you can search for this video title to watch it "Navajo Grandma Natural Yucca Shampoo Part 1" We also use yucca in Caribbean culture a lot too. It's so cool to see it used across many different cultures - so many uses! Nature is amazing!
Great video. I can’t wait to see how it helps my scalp in the long run. I love the smell of roses, lilacs/verbena, neroli (a citrus that Spanish princesses used to scent even their stationary), jasmine, and strawberry flowers (smells like vanilla to me) also Siberian fir and cedarwood 🥰

I would say a hard maybe? You're just outside the USDA hardiness zone for this plant, so it'd be a stretch. There may be some other gingers that could work out, or some awesome native plants that could make a beautiful garden and bring back local pollinators!

Hey how in India i got this plant???
We live in TN and winter is cold. Can the ginger be in greenhouse or outside?:)
@AllieandCocosScienceShow
11 ай бұрын
Great question! The winters may be a little too cold, though the plant is pretty resilient. There was a big cold snap here in Florida (where I am, it can get to the 20s and 30s for a few days), and the plants died back, then came back a few months later. Greenhouses would definitely be better temperature control, but the plant can get a bit big! So keep that in mind on your plant journey!

This plant is extremely invasive
@AllieandCocosScienceShow
Жыл бұрын
In my area, it's not deemed invasive yet, but I could absolutely see it going that way (especially with rising temperatures due to climate change). I know in other areas south of me, it's considered invasive or noxious at least. Such is the way with so many attractive plants (my area, Lantana is super invasive! Everyone plants it because "bees love them" and they think it's native, but it stops bees from visiting native plants). I do believe there was a cookbook or a book of ways to use invasive species, which is pretty cool. Maybe we can eradicate some of these plants by using them?
Can you grow this in California?
@AllieandCocosScienceShow
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! It really depends on where you live in California (which has quite a few diverse ecoregions and climates!). This plant does prefer tropical/subtropical areas, which is why they work so well in the southeast. However, it's possible it could do just fine (or in an indoor or greenhouse setting). HOWEVER, I'm always a big believer in growing native plants! I actually found a great resource specific to California so you could potentially plant a whole garden perfect for the birds and pollinators in your area! gardenplanner.calscape.org
