Washing Machine Sud & F21 Error Code

This video shows the final fix first, followed by the long journey to figure that out. Thus don't go right to the end for the fix. It was a plugged Water Level Pressure Switch Air Trap that just needed cleaned or replaced for like $20.
Kenmore Elite QuietPak4, HE3t, Model 11049962603 (~2009 model). Sud error code along with the F21 error code, but it wasn't the Drain Pump, plugged strainer, plugged hose, or the pressure switch. It was a plugged Water Level Pressure Switch Air Trap that just needed cleaned or replaced for like $20.

    I had F21 and Sud error codes, and my wife thought it was dead and wanted me to buy a new washer, only a month after I decided to discontinue my home warranty. Thank god I followed your complete guideline to clean up the filter and the airtrap. It turned out there was quite a lot of funny things in the filter, and even one sock that fully blocked the pipe behind it. Now I can save hundreds of buck of the hard-earned money for something else. Thank you Jim!

    Checking back in after cleaning out the pressure sensor reservoir. First, this was an easier job than I expected. Took the screws off the back panel and the rest was easy. Easy access from the rear. One tiny screw holding in the reservoir. A few wires that were clipped in. Super easy. Turns out my reservoir was perfectly clean. So I decided to check the rubber tube that attaches to the bottom of the washer. It’s very easy to access from the rear. Used vice grips to take the rubber hose off. Lo-and-behold, there’s was a grungy sock inside the hose wrapped around the float ball. Cleaned it out. Putting the rubber hose back onto the washer was the hardest part. Vice grips are mandatory and even still it’s hard to get the wire ring back into its place. I can’t thank you enough for this video. It saved me replacing the pump and the actual pressure sensor. And your really excellent video skills made it very easy to watch and follow along. No jerking the camera all over the place. No in-and-out of focus. Anyway, thank you!

    After watching this video, I felt empowered to open up my Kenmore 110 series washer and get it working again after relentless "Sd" and "F21" warnings. Fortunately, it was pretty easy... just a bunch of garbage in the cylindrical-ish white piece just before the pump that unscrews, on the bottom/front of the washer (see ~8:30 in the video). After cleaning that out ($1.97 in loose change, a couple of kids' socks, and a bunch of unidentifiable crud), it is pumping water like normal rather than just a trickle. Be sure to have rags and bucket ready, as there's not a great way to remove that piece without black water spilling out. The fact that I found such large objects in there makes me think there may be an issue with a seal somewhere upstream, but it's working for now. Thanks for the video!

    Excellent video, just saved me replacing a 15 year old washer that was otherwise in good shape. Symptoms were F21 error after draining the tub, failed at C06 in diagnostics (takes too long to drain). Pump ran fine, drained tub quickly and was empty but washer thought there was still water in it so it kept running the pump for 8 minutes then F21. Checked out the pump filter, got some gunk and $1 in change and a button but it wasn't blocked - no difference. Took the back off and the air trap was obviously plugged up (you could see the brown gunk even before removing it). Totally blocked. Cleaned it out with a bottle brush and hot water, put it back together and it works great again. This is an easy fix once you know about it (no one mentions this on the appliance repair sites) - once you get the back off the washer it's a single screw and clip and pull off the little hose to the pressure switch/sensor. Cheers!

    Thank you for the details on the water level pressure switch air trap. All the other videos on KZread for F21 errors are only about cleaning the drain trap in the front, and my machine was pretty clean there and still throwing the F21 error. I was about to give up and start shopping for a new washer until I found your video and low and behold I also had a backed up air trap. Cleared it out and it's working perfectly again. Cheers.

    For anyone interested, the small torque screw was a 5/64" allen wrench. The rest of the screws on the bottom front panel and the back plate were removable with a T15 torx bit. I found that the F21/SYD message had 3 FREE main possible causes listed online: the front strainer (this should be your first go-to), the eco ball area, and the Water Level Pressure Switch Air Trap covered here. Since I had the washer itself out, I covered all three, problem solved (the strainer was a complete mess...almost certain this was the real problem). Thanks for the video Jim Dandy!

    I found a problem with my pressure switch and fixed it. It was causing intermittent error code F21. I never found my washer with a lot of water still in it when this code posted and the pump is new and pumps water fast. No clogs in tubes or filter. In short, if you have a SUD or F21 error and use proper he soap, have no clogs, and a good pump, then replace or clean your switch. Here's my long explaination for those that want it: At 32:26 the analog pressure switch is shown. Mine is black and red but likely the same. The far left contact #1 and #3 are a normally closed contact. I unplugged my machine and removed the switch plug and connected hose and used a multimeter to measure across these two contacts. (#1 and #3) They should read zero ohm with no pressure on the switch. If you blow into where the tube connects you will hear one click followed by another. These are two switches that toggle at different pressures. I think the fist click closes two other contacts (not #1 and #3) saying the water is filled. The second click i think is just there to stop filling if it's activated. This signifies an overfill condition. It takes higher pressure to activate so only does if the first switch fails. As soon as you hear the first click when applying pressure the #1 and #3 contact open indicating to the washer it's filling and is no longer empty. I believe when the washer has finished pumping out the water in the tub it needs to see a connection between #1 and #3. On my switch these contacts were showing a rapidly changing resistance as i lightly pressed against the contacts with no pressure on the switch. High resistance when it should be 0 ohm likely caused the computer to think the drain cycle didn't finish in time. The manual states that if the drain time exceeds 8 minutes you will get a F21 code. I believe my tub was drained in time, but sometimes the #1 and #3 switch were high resistance indicating the tub was not empty. I used a screwdriver to gentry pry off the back case of the switch. You just need to go slow and work it off all the way around it. Their are a lot of parts inside, but take it apart slowly and pay attention to how the parts stack so that you can later reassemble it I used some electrical contact cleaner (available in a spray can) and just sprayed the contacts clean while manually actuating them. After letting the contact cleaner air dry i reassembled and tested the contacts again and they now reliably show 0 ohms with no pressure and open or OL when I blow into the switch. I reinstalled everything and this alarm code has not returned. When the lower of the two pressure switches fails to open on a drain cycle you get a SUD error.

    FYI My Whirlpool Duet washer came with the manual and a DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE. In that guide, under F21, it said: LONG DRAIN After 4 minutes the "Sd" error will be displayed, then 4 minutes later the "F21" error code will be displayed. So if you get the "Suds" error (Sd) it might be your pump is unable to pump out the water within 4 minutes. The Suds code might not have anything to do with suds but rather problems with the pump emptying the washer and in the case of this video, a problem with the "Air Trap."

    DO THIS FIRST!!! : TAKE THE DRAIN TUBE OFF THE BACK OF THE WASHER AND CLEAN IT OUT!!!! mine was completely clogged!!!! Note that i did look at the clear drain tube on the inside-- it wasn't terrible but i did remove it and clean as well. For some reason the drain tube on OUTSIDE of washer was packed with nasty @#$@t took some effort to clean- but got it cleaned out. I would do this before tearing apart the machine!! i did all of this-- and yes-- the front cleanout was dirty--but not clogged. and i took the back off and the clear box at lower part of the rear of the drum. it too was dirty, but not bad. neither of which seemed bacd enough to cause the no-drain situation. it was 100% the drain tube on outside of my machine

    Yes, the solution is in the video. I know it's long, but 33 minutes and I show about everything that could cause the F21 & SUD's codes. It turned out to be a plugged level sensing tube "Air Trap" that was giving a false reading to the Pressure Switch ("level sensor"). This can be cleaned out, thus a no cost repair. I could also be a failed pump, plugged strainer, plugged hose, or bad pressure sensor/switch.

    Excuse me if I’m wrong, but did you run the diagnostic AGAIN after the repair?? I did that and the error codes went away. Running another diagnostic after the repair seemed to reset the SD error code. You probably fixed it but since the code was still there after the repair, you kept on.

    I can't remember about running the diagnostic again, but I kept going until I fixed the root cause of the problem, which was the Water-Level Pressure Switch Air Trap that was plugged and causing a false water level reading. The computer thought there was still water in the tub when actually there was not. I replaced the pump first, then cleaned the strainer, then checked for plugged piping, then replaced the pressure switch, all actually unnecessary, but still cheaper than a service call.

    After having the same issue, SUD followed by F21, I did everything in this video, only to continue with the same problem. I noticed that once it got to the F21 code, and I unplugged/re-plugged the machine and pressed "STOP", it would drain. I observed further, and noticed that when it got to the point in the cycle and said SUD, it would stop, fill a bit and wait, which according to the manual was correct. After a bit, the pump turned on, but no water was being expelled. A flashlight against the discharge tube, just off the pump showed it had water in it. This is after the pump worked to empty the machine, once being plugged in (quite frustrating). I pulled the pump off, and found that the impeller (center shaft) was quite loose. I could easily move it side-to-side a 1/4 inch, though it still rotated rather easily. My conclusion was that the pump, at certain times, was cavitating from being off-center, thus not moving any water. A new pump was $28 on Amazon, an easy fix and the machine is back to working. It's an easy test, if you suspect the pump. First use the flashlight to observe water in the outlet pipe on the pump, then unscrew the pump (after draining the machine, of course) pull it off and wiggle the impeller. By comparison, the new pump's impeller moved less than a 1/16 of an inch.

  • @jimdandy6472

    @jimdandy6472

    Glad you solved it with a new pump. I think I started with the pump, then found a strainer full of junk, but still had the problem. The washer does have a feature to try and eliminate SUD's by injecting more water and pumping again, but that's more for situations where someone used too much soap or the wrong kind of soap. In my case the plugged sensing tube was tricking the pressure indicator into thinking there was still water in the machine when there actually was not. At one point I pulled the drain hose out of the wall drain and put it in a 5 gallon bucket and ran a cycle. I could then easily see the pump was moving water very well, which ruled out the new pump cleaned strainer, and any plugged hoses. So I moved on to the Pressure Indicator ("level sensor"), and then found the plugged level sensing tube.

    You need to take the top off your washing machine and at the right corner their small water level sensor this is the problem. Call the company fix appliances they’re in Canada and in U.S.A. They can fix any washing machine problem. I live in Canada and I have the same problem as you. They’re coming to my house next week. I will let you know what it is. And you should be only use so very little soap. If you are not rounding around in mud or grass just Presoak your clothing and use no soap at all. If have a full load only use a tablespoon of laundry soap each time. Water down your soap in the bottle, keep adding water to your bottle of soap all the time. Or just use the pods in your washing machine. Use the name brand puerile saying on KZread is the best one to buy. All laundry soap is 98% water. Look in laundry soap cap for how much soap to use, people use way to much soap at every washing cycle. Always wash in Cold Water best for a front load washing machine. Don’t overload your washing machines. Hot Water fades your clothing overtime
