I can get why people would think that the Pinkertons were made up. Especially when one hear about some of the stories about them. Which is generally not the best of stories nowadays. I actually did talk about them today. But only because I happen to have a relative that works for the company that owns Pinkertons.

I was starting to get back into magic after over a decade of not playing. That plus the OGL has pretty much made me walk away from Hasbro WoTC like I walked away from GW. Sure my few thousand dollars of purchases is not alot but how many more people like me have walked away?

Add my few thousand dollars every year. After the Magic 30th Anniversary scam, the Pinkertons and the D&D OGL issue, I cant support WotC. 0 cents. I think this is the best we can do. Speak with our wallets. I really dont care about their stuff anymore. There's a ton of leisure options these days (rpgs and games from other companies, movies and series, etc).

@@LohnPondai I think the best thing about the OGL fracas is now they were forced to essentially put out the perception of support for 1.0a because they are TERRIFIED of what happens if it goes to court... a case they would very likely lose, because you cannot copyright rules for a game system.

2 years so far and havent purchased a single thing WoTC makes.. pretty awesome all the spare money I have!

After the OGL debacle the Pinkerton incident was the dumbest thing WOTC did. No-one remembers what the cards were - but they remember the Pinkertons!

I definitely thought that was made up name in RDR2. To me the name sounds like it could be the detective force in Peppa Pig Universe.

I learned about the Pinkertons from Extra History channel.

Depends. If they were trying to trash their image (which seems to be their goal lately), then yes. It did a fantastic job.

As bad as sending the PInkertons to collect the cards was, it was all because of WotC's error.

Based on WotC's stock prices, this was a big mistake.

What if they had taken the money they would have paid the Pinkertons and offered the guy that money if he (1) gave back the cards (2) took down the videos and (3) sign an agreement saying he would have to give the money back if he put the videos or any other images of the cards back up anywhere before the cards were officially released.

Whatever happened to just reaching out to someone and asking them reasonably? Are Pinkertons really your first choice? Is "Dear Valued Customer" not a thing anymore? The whole thing seems a bit excessive.

Well, I hope they considered it "worth it," because that was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I have not purchased a D&D product since that incident, and will not do so as long as WotC/Hasblow owns the game.

The CEO's probably think it was worth it.

Found the simp for WotC, folks.

I don't think it's accurate to paint this as if WotC was sitting around and made an executive decision to send The Pinkerton's after this individual. They also don't have Pinkertons on staff. They have a standard loss management contract with The Pinkertons like thousands of other companies. I get the name is triggering, but it's a company like any other security company.

You need to get out more the Pinkertons are documented as doing some really shady shit. "When Magic: The Gathering cards turned up on KZread last week, publisher Wizards of the Coast sent private investigators from Pinkerton to retrieve them. The resulting confrontation reportedly frightened one woman to tears, and resulted in the confiscation of nearly two dozen boxes of cards by private investigators. Wizards confirmed the incident to Polygon. "

It's still not a good look and if WotC was smart they'd dissociate from them and payroll someone else because The Pinkertons' infamous history. But I suppose the blame is better placed on the Pinkertons themselves and WotC suffering secondhand embarrassment was a side-effect of it but still their fault and doesn't change the fact the tactics employed were excessive against what was an honest mistake.
