Was This Cute Chubby Prehistoric Crocodile A Salad Muncher? | Simosuchus
Ғылым және технология
Madagascar is home to many animal lineages which enjoyed greater global diversity thousands of years ago. Pygmy hippopotamus, dwarf chameleons, and of course the lemurs are all examples of old genetic pools thrown into an isolated environment and given unfettered access to adapt and evolve into crazy forms. Madagascar has been this way before humans and the mastodon. Madagascar has been a land of the lost for 88 million years.

Great video! Simosuchus really doesn't get enough attention. It is sad that it wasn't included in Prehistoric Planet. There are two minor errors in the video. First, there were actually other herbivorous crocodylomorphs besides Simosuchus. These included other notosuchians like Chimaerasuchus and neosuchians such as Iharkutosuchus. Also, the "stegosaur" fossils from the Maevarano Formation were misclassed and are now thought to have come from ankylosaurs.

I'd like one as a pet, just imagine such an absolute unit galloping towards you as you get back home, wiggling its stubby tail from joy.

One has to wonder what the environmental conditions and lack of competition were in place when Simosuchus evolved that allowed it to fill out a herbivorous niche...

I freaking love the name pug croc!I also love his stumpy tail. It's so cute.
Let's all be honest here. If they were alive today, we all would try and make them house pets.
They cute They chonkie But most importantly they like to chompy.
I wonder if lips or liplessness is the ancestral condition of metasuchians. I'm really curious if neosuchians evolved a lack of lips to adapt to water, or if they were already lipless and notosuchians had to evolve lips to compensate for their land-based (and sometimes herbivorous) lifestyles.
It was awesome in PP2!
Imagine living on an island with tiny Pug crocs, big murder sausages with hot dogs for arms, and frogs the size of tires.

I heard that the Pug Croc is appearing on Prehistoric Planet 2.
Oh lord he coming
I love these they're so cute! 😍
Even crocs can be cute ☺️
Minus the club tail, it honestly looks like evolution creating an Ankylosaur from a crocodilian, a sort of 'Ankylo-suchus' in a way. Honestly this is such a weird little creature. The lost diversity of crocodilians is seriously underappreciated. Also a part of me keeps seeing the pictures and thinking "that's a pretty cute Pokemon". RIP little guys. Also, can we start a petition to have Simosuchus feature in any new seasons of Prehistoric Planet?

Did you release a video about this same animal sometime back?
Simosuchus, to me, is a good example of why we shouldn't look too much into the relation of animals when it comes to lips. People often use the relation of crocodilians to dinosaurs as evidence that dinosaurs are lipless, yet based on the appearance of the skull alone, scientists see simosuchus in particular and immediately question whether or not it was lipless like other crocodilians. Or crocodilomorphs? I don't know if it was actually a crocodilian. Anyways, point is, if the relationship between simosuchus and modern crocs isn't enough for us to assume it must've been lipless, we really shouldn't even consider it with dinosaurs. Personally I do think simosuchus probably had lips, but I'm not sure if they'd be as developed as dinosaurs or not. Either way it does seem they had them to me. The placement of the teeth especially is suspicious. Rather than having teeth jutting out the sides of a sloping curve, there's a steep drop in the bone and then teeth placed directly underneath. Or above, if it's the bottom jaw. Very straight teeth. I think the really interesting thing is that all these traits we expect to find in lipped animals are present in a crocodilian we'd expect to find lips the most. Land-based and herbivorous, if any croc would need lips, it would be this one. To keep its teeth dry, and to keep the plants in its mouth. Correlation does not equal causation, but I do find it quite interesting as this could be viewed as evidence that we are correct in the foramina count and rugosity of the skull being evidence for lips. I guess you could also view it as the opposite, though, and say that you believe simosuchus was probably lipless due to its heritage, and then argue it's evidence that these traits do not correlate with lips. But that's why I think it's interesting that we found these traits SPECIFICALLY in simosuchus, since again, it's the most likely croc you can think of to find lips in. It's not something you find in crocs you'd expect to be lipless, like extinct aquatic carnivorous crocs.
Armoured veggie crocs.

Maybe their snouts were used for digging, even if they didn't burrow. Pigs use their shovel-snouts to dig for roots and mushrooms, so maybe that, rather than surface vegetation, was its diet.

If you gave Simosuchus a paleberry and pat it's head, it would bring you a random item.
Herbi,Omni,or Carnivore, no one can disagree, that this pug croc is almost 99% made out of PET MATERIAL It was made to be domesticated , i fully believe humans evolved too late, when these could've been pets
Since it's a herbivore with a snout for digging, it probably dug up roots and grubs

Well if it's possible to turn off and on dormant jeans and birds to make them look more like dinosaurs. I wonder if you could do the same thing with alligators and crocodiles. And maybe recreate some more interesting ancient version of crocodiles. Maybe some cute little puppy studs like this guy?
@davidgantenbein9362
2 жыл бұрын
Shouldn’t work though, given it’s not an ancestor to modern crocodilians, so it’s specific adaptations that gave it its unique look wouldn’t be reflected in any genes of a crocodile. Though it’s probably possible to „recreate“ older versions of crocodilomorphs.
@cinderedrockjf8055
2 жыл бұрын
@@davidgantenbein9362 I know there was a crocodile morph species that had walked on its hind legs at one time like a dinosaur. I still think it'd be kind of cool to see what kind of adaptations the creature would have if you gave it the ability to walk upright.
@cinderedrockjf8055
2 жыл бұрын
@@davidgantenbein9362 that is basically my idea is recreating older versions of crocodile morphs. And I don't know exactly cuz, I'm not a expert on genomes what specific kinds of adaptations you could literally give them. But I know crocodile morphs used to do a whole bunch of different things.
