    Rather than coil-splitting, I often run both coils in parallel for a bright & jangly sound. I'll bet you'd get a better result on this guitar doing that.

    That LP Black Beauty triple-hum middle position sound (well, what you can achieve of it on a $400 Chinese import). That would probably be a more useful tone with these humbuckers' pole configuration.

    You could also do a wiring mod to get the "HH & 5-way" options of 1. Bridge humbucker 2. Outer coils 3. Both humbuckers 4. Inner coils 5. Neck humbucker Should let you have full volume across the strings.

    Very good tone to start with, and I really like the split middle position. I have an old beat-up Teisco that I put an uncovered all-slug humbucker in, but I pushed out three (EAD) slugs on the North coil, and three (GBE) slugs from the south coil. It's the neck pickup. It has a gold-foil-type pickup but without the metal cover for the bridge pup. It cries and screams.

    A cautionary tale on modding to coil split humbuckers with push pull pots. Grab a snack, this is long. The Ric in my avatar is modded with push pull coil split set up. This was done 2 years ago this month. All pickups are HB1 RIC humbuckers. I haven't noticed bass or treble being louder than the other. I believe it's due to the construction of the pickups. These are way different than other makes. I can get classic Ric toaster tone. It doesn't have that funky sounds like a single coil with something missing that Ryan mentioned. My wiring is custom with three push pull pots. Neck and middle pots are the tone pots. Bridge took over the 5th blend knob, so it is a coil splitting volume only pot. It has no dedicated tone pot, so it's wide open. Set up worked great until my neck pick up took a shit in the fall. Was told "hey, Ric HB1s can die at any time. Even when sitting unused in a drawer". I sent both the neck pickup and the loaded pickguard back to the guy who built my harness as warranty. He was happy to troubleshoot the pickup because he dealt with this before and needed to rule out some root causes. The harness was fine. The neck pickup made everything malfunction. When the neck pickup was in full humbucking mode, everything works fine and other two pickups coil split with no issues. Go split the coil and the rest of the guitar is fucking dead. Nothing works. No sound, no power. Cue red hot rage. I'm supposed to get my guitar back tomorrow and pray this fucking thing is wired back correctly and functioning again. If it's having the identical issue with the new HB1, I'm taking the guitar elsewhere to either fix it correctly or reinstall the other custom harness I had before this last mod. Prior harness only had bridge coil split. My advice: you better know your guitar's electronics and issues that may arise. I love my guitar. I don't love the problems I'm having with it and hope that I have a working guitar again.

    What might be fun it to reverse the magnet on the neck pickup ala Peter Green . As another bit of trivia, Peter's Greeny Les Paul also had both Humbucker pickups lower height on the top base strings to soften bass tones. Gave more prominace to the higher pich jangle .

  • @zanzabar4ky7
    @zanzabar4ky7 Жыл бұрын

    If you swap the green from the switch with the ground (not shield) it will make the bridge pickup bass side work on the split. Those are the start and end of the pickup. They are not actually a ground and signal. You could also make them change to parallel, or simulate a tap by putting a 1k to 2k resistor between the switch output and ground. Check the SD site for wiring. You could figure it out with a multi meter.

    That Vietnamese IYV ITF-300 (a 2-humbucker Telecaster Thinline semi-hollow) is wired the same way, but in an enormous control cavity routed in the back. The four wires for each pickup are readily available with the cover off. Either splitting the coils or going series/parallel with push-pull DPDT pots would be fun... and then top it off with the six-way Freeway Les Paul switch.

Cool seeing that the pickups are 4-conductor but based upon your experience, I probably will not bother and now I guess we both understand why Eart did not set it up this way from the factory! I guess I'll give these pickups a chance but I am already thinking of swapping in a set of Seymour Duncan "Pearly Gates" or something to that effect. How about next trying out a set of acoustic transducer saddles? I am also thinking of this mod but would be great to watch you do first so I can determine whether it would be worth it! 😂

    All you might need to do Ryan, is to just screw in all the screws lower down to roughly the height of the slugs under the cover where they don't show. They could be just screws under the cover for all we know... Then raise the whole pickup a bit to get a better tone. Or just pop the covers off completely.

    in my experience its not about the 'sound' of the cable, its about the fact that the cheap plastic cables have little to no shielding and can tend to make crackling noises when they are moved. You dont need to spend a lot of money to get decent cables but the cheapies that come with guitars should be avoided.

    I think you've uncovered one of the differences between a normal and 'wide-range' humbucker. When you split a normal bucker you're just grounding out the opposite-wound hum coil to subtract it from the net signal. Noise results, the famous "60-Cycle Hum." (Nice plug there, you're welcome.) A wide-range humbucker probably has the same polarity in both coils and a mid-coil crossover tap. Evidence of that is when you hopefully selected 'single split coil' on the bridge the output decreased on the bass strings but the hum didn't increase. Still a humbucker. So when you ground out a coil you lose the full output on half the strings- in this case the bass strings. Interesting. Or I could be totally wrong. Ask Phil or Dylan.

  • @abergreg
    @abergreg9 ай бұрын

    In 40 years of playing I've never felt the need for a coil tapped bridge pickup, fit a treble bleed and turn it down to seven when you want more top and less mids, its still humbucking. I always fit a pull push coil tap (tone control) on the neck though.
