Was Johnny Sack Really Going To Whack Tony? | The Sopranos Explained
Фильм және анимация
In season 5 of The Sopranos, Tony Soprano is in a pickle when his cousin Tony Blundetto is wanted by the New York Lupertazzi family, in particular Phil Leotardo, for taking out one of their members.
Not wanting to give him up for torture, Tony instead takes Tony B out himself and tells Johnny Sack where Tony B is.
This doesn't solve the problem though, and Johnny Sack phones up Tony telling him Phil is angry, and John wants to set up a meeting in New York. But Tony says, "no offence, John, but I got an IQ of 136. It’s been tested." John is silent, Tony waits, and then Johnny says “Alright, tomorrow morning then my house 6:30”, but when Tony is hesitant he says “You think I’m gonna give you armatz with Ginny upstairs?”, and then reiterates that Tony should come alone, as he will be too.
So what happened here? Was Johnny Sack setting up a hit? Was Johnny really going to kill Tony if he turned up to the original meeting in season 5? Let's discuss.

Tony getting whacked in NYC, 100% a legitimate concern. At that point in the war, there was enough tension for everyone to be concerned. When they had that sit down at the Lupertazzi hangout, The Averna Social Club, threats were being made on Christopher, in front of everyone. Johnny already made arrangements with Tony to whack Carmine. Then, Carmine gave Tony the OK, to whack Johnny. (or was it the other way around) Either way, it was implied that NY was ready for some major shakeup, while the battle rages on. Curiously, Melfi continued to treat Tony, despite all the news going down during the conflict. Jennifer had already warned Tony of her obligation to call authorities if people were to get hurt, during that earlier war between Junior and Tony, several seasons before.

The scene just indicates heightened tension between the families. Tony is pointing out that he's on his guard, knowing full well that Johnny would understand what he's inferring by refusing a meeting on "away turf".

I agree. It would seem like Tony wants to drive home the point that Phil and others are creating this discord.
Johnny had whacking Tony on his back burner for a while. When he moved to NJ, he said he wasn’t going to stick his beak in, and immediately started sticking his beak in with Ralph at first, then Paulie. He had designs on taking that territory for himself. He wasn’t a natural busybody. He was always rational and pragmatic. He had a plan when he started cozying up to Tony’s underlings.

Tony had his friend pegged as the ruthless creep.
I never noticed Tony kept his hand in his pocket the whole time, and I’ve watched the show through 4 or 5 times! Makes sense though. Tony didn’t walk around strapped all the time because he didn’t need to and it would be an unnecessary risk to carry an unlicensed firearm, but he made sure to have an unregistered handgun on him when he went to meet Johnny and as you pointed out, kept it close at hand
@johnbrennan2240
11 ай бұрын
Addendum: I’m obviously not as observant a viewer as I thought I was, but I never even thought about the fact that Tony only had the handgun he tosses when the feds show up because he didn’t fully trust Johnny and thought the meet might be a set up. He had no choice but to come alone and try to make peace with New York, but he had the good sense to bring a little plan b with him

I love all the Easter eggs you drop in your script. So entertaining! 🤣
Johnny wasn't being exactly subtle about his intentions, I think he actually wanted for Tony to know he wanted to kill him but his actual intention from the start was to "compromise" and meet at his home. Like you said: as pissed as he was, he knew that Tony B was going Rogue, he was just using the situation to take something out of it.
Tony bringing a gun to a meeting like that is a big no no in OC circles, especially at a meeting between bosses. So he was either really worried, or the writers just wanted to set up the gun charge that happened in a later episode.
Aside from Tony and Paulie, obviously, Ive always loved Johnny Sack and hes always been one of my favorite characters from the show.
There was scene where Phil sees Tony at Artie's restaurant, I think, and relays thanks from John in prison, about handling the "Russ" situation. Tony denies knowing anything about it. Phil opens his jacket, to show he isn't wired, but also communicates that he understands the current situation, and being extra paranoid and careful. I think Johnny understood the same from the phone call with Tony and offered his home as a good faith gesture. The Feds busting John during that scene was just another sign that no one was safe, anywhere. And Tony was right to be paranoid and trust no one.

These guys have no real friendship. They simply use each other to their particular advantage. If either one saw a tactical, strategic, and/or relatively stable financial gain from whacking the other, they would do it without blinking an eye.
one thing I love about Sopranos is that the characters don't become better people, its so realistic, just like real life most people just become worse people as they grow older, they try to change(like Tony)but they don't try hard enough, and all the characters are full of flaws

Johnny sack is my favorite character even tho he had his ways. Him and Tony’s relationship was up and down but I think they had a friendship that wouldn’t allow either of them to kill each other.
I believe if the Sac-Man had not been indicted and had not contracted cancer, he would have whacked Tony somewhere down the line. Sac was playing a waiting game, he had Paulie as his inside guy and once he had a capo or two in his pocket and was confident they could take over the rackets in NJ, Sac would have whacked Tony and made Patsy or some other amiable capo boss. Either way, Tony's days were numbered after that animal Blundetto went off the rez. NY likely figured if Tony did not directly sanction Blundetto's actions, then he was unable to control his own family and therefore both a liability and a bad boss in general.

Johnny Sac can probably get a note from his doctor saying he wasn’t going to whack Tony.
He wasn't going to whack Tony but I understand Tony's trepidation given the circumstances and so did Johnny Sack. I think Johnny really wanted to put the whole situation to bed because it was disrupting business. Johnny didn't really care for Phil very much but obviously had to strongly back him up being a Capo and he was in the Johnny Sack wing of the family and on his side during his power struggle with Little Carmine.
@thomasstone3480

yeah, that nobody actually liked or cared about phil is germane here- johnny has been put in kind of a similar situation with phil that carmine was in with the ginny joke situation, where he's being asked to risk business for someone's sense of honor, and as it's not HIS honor he doesn't give too much of a shit. one of the things that seems to come up a lot in the series is that given that the mobsters are all basically sociopaths, they're not... very likable, even to one another, lmao. paulie is one of tony's oldest connections of any kind, and he strongly considers murdering him straight up for being annoying, and tony is basically seduced by furio simply being kind of a fun hang

Great video as ever!
If John wanted tony dead, he had every motive and opportunity and willing people. The change of venue might make it easier to lure his prey out, since he could have Tony killed on the way, and we know the Feds are listening since they hit John immediately. I think is John wanting to talk to Tony in a dignified manner, but from a position of strength, on "neutral" enough ground that two bosses could talk without Capos or right hand men since we saw how that went last time when John has to put on a show and make threats for his underlings. The two can't just meet anymore, and since Tony doesn't trust John and John comes on too strong, maybe it is John realized that Tony has every reason to think he's walking into a trap and has to convince him that he is sincere. Masterful acting.
"Refusing to give his cousin up for torture at the hands of the Shah of Iran's secret police" Let me tell you a couple of three things, I almost died laughing at that and my estimation of you as a man just fuckin skyrocketed.
3:12 got a good giggle out of me
The pause from Johnny also could have meant that he just didn't think of it at the time and there was a real chance that it would have occurred to John to whack Tony later. The pause could have meant, "I might have actually been tempted later." Good video.

I appreciated the fact that Johnny even though still looked down on Joisey, he still understood the importance of good relationship and how being friends with Tony smooths things over and how Tony is not a dumbass, they're just inferior because they're in a poorer state that's not as rich with as many Businesses and Money as New York, while Phil was just an emotional dude, acted like they're not thieves and murderers just like Joisey and ended up being betrayed, in the end New York were also a glorified crew and not really a true family neither.

Idk... Johnny Sac was very very hurt when he felt Tony was involved. If you remember the quick scene At "PEEPS" Joseph John's funeral, when they were in the car, J Sac was literally holding back tears when he says "I swear on my mother Tony IF I FIND OUT YOURE LYING!....." So I think he really really felt betrayed, and it took a lot for him to finally trust Tony again.
Love your channel and humour that only the true fans would get. Keep it up!
killing isnt taboo to them, theres no reason for johnny to react with surprise. it's a professional tool for them both, so it's not a big deal to bring it up as a possibility tony would prefer to minimize.

Johnny Sack & Tony both knew Tony’s life was in danger if he showed up in NY. It doesn’t seem like Sack himself planned to kill Tony nor set him up, but he was as aware of the risk as Tony was.
Interesting speculation, but no. Johnny was quiet not because he was "found out." Johnny simply was acknowledging that that kind of thing does happen all the time and Tony is wise to be suspicious. But Johnny wasn't actually going to kill him. I could say more, but I'll leave it at that. Edit: Never mind - Cineranter states the same opinion in the end of the video.

These videos are SO GOOD. Every single time. 136 IQ isn’t “genius;” it’s 140. That’s an oversimplification as many scientific communities still argue over how many types of intelligence there are and how to best measure them. The way to calculate IQ (mental age divided by chronological age) means by default your IQ gets lower every year on your birthday. Which simply illustrates its an inexact science. 136 is pretty high tho, considering the “average” American is at 100, so a large portion of Americans are below 100 IQ. Which isn’t too bright. Marilyn Vos Savant holds the Guinness World Record for highest IQ ever tested.
I think Tony just realised that there's no point in arguing the point, he has a high enough IQ to know how to allay Tony's fears.

Johnny just knew there was no reassuring answer. I don't think there was an intent to kill him. He chose something more concrete rather than increasing the tension. He thought it through.
Yo the original ending where it's the theme in reverse is crazy 🤯
I think that Johnny Sac would have made good on his agreement if Tony went through on the Carmine Sr. hit. Even in an inter-family war, Johnny Sac would have come out ahead either way, so why not make the move? It always seemed to me like that was the mistake which led to all the other mistakes that led to the S6 War with NY.
People always say Tony didn't have the makings of a varsity athlete and Johnny Sack did. Only one outran the FBI though...
It’s crazy how Johnny Sack character was on the show since season 1, at their “felice anniversario a Tony y Carmela” scene😂…
Nice of you to give the Shah of Iran his acting credits!
Jr taught Tony well, “ Come heavy, or don’t come at all “….
I think Johnny Sack WOULD kill Tony...if it made sense to do so. It was probably not what Johnny would have wanted out of the meeting, but if things took a dark turn, sure. Whack him.

John would know T was thinking this way and expected the reaction. Just theatre and a GF reference.

I'm personally in the camp that John would've allowed Phil to kill Tony. Not because he hates Tony or that there's an inherent advantage to get rid of him, but this is Johnny right when he's considered to be at his worst. At this point he's insanely paranoid, trigger happy, and full of bloodlust. It wouldn't surprise me if his first response to a problem now is just to kill it, and that's how he viewed Tony.
I think John should have taken the $1 million
