Scobie is a good defence barrister - hence he knew the case against Lechmere was good - he would naturally view it from the perspective of how it would be defended against. Jack was in fact Charles Lechmere who worked for Pickfords meats as a delivery driver. All bar one of the murders were on his route to work, he left for work in the early hours, the only one not near his route was where his mum lived. He was found leaning over the first victim and claimed he’d found her that way. He lived until his early 70s. He was also known as Charles Cross to some.
As usual you make compelling arguments Edward - and I quite liked Levy as a suspect. Really appreciate how you break down everything into bits, and dispel the many "truths" that have stood for years.

It occurred to me that it is strange Paul and Lechmere had never run into each other before, nor after the Nichols encounter. It would seem Lechmere's habitual route to work was regularly earlier than Paul's. Lechmere's encounter with Nichols delayed him enough to be caught up by Paul that morning. Evidently Nichols cut up the side street from Whitechapel road to have spotted Lechmere, who took advantage of the happenstance. I'm sure Lechmere heard the foot falls of Paul before he turned the corner. He couldn't depart without raising suspicion and awaited the stranger. It was shrewd behavior and shows he was calculating and not an idiot, nor raving lunatic. I'm interested to know now who the residents of the street were.

Yes Lechmere had a considerably longer work route to cover so naturally wouldn't have been walking Bucks Row at the same time as Paul if both started work at 4.00. 'Something' kept Lechmere from already being well past Bucks Row by the time Paul came along, and we have a fair idea what that was.
Given that we know today that most serial killers are "normal" and the majority have steady jobs and families, it's quite unbelievable that so many people still seem to fixate on the thought that they are likely to be lunatics/overtly mentally unwell. It's especially shocking that profilers like Pat Brown are sticking with these outdated ideas. I think the normality of Lechmere is one of the biggest things that points to his guilt over all the other alleged suspects (obviously, behind the fact that he was found at a crime scene and all of his suspect behaviour thereafter!)

@@thehouseoflechmere9407on another point altogether, why do you think that Lechmere gave his real address at the Polly Nichols inquest when he had already lied about his name (or been less than truthful)? Seems a bit odd. I also think that he was well known to most or all of the victims and maybe had used their services previously, as they were willing to go with him knowing there was a killer on the loose.

I think I've covered this on another film, but the logic of the situation was that he came forward to avoid being caught in a drag net unawares. If he gave a false address and the police called for a follow up and he obviously wasn't there, then he would be subjected to the drag net he wanted to avoid. So he had no option but to give his address. But only one newspaper reported it which suggests he either mumbled it or in the confusion at the court didn't give it and that paper - The Star - obtained the address from.the court officer during the lunch recess.

Painstakingly correct and fact-based? Not to be confrontational, but on what do you base this assessment? Ed states, of Lawende, Levy, and Harris: "They all lived in that small tight-knit community - Jewish community - around Aldgate." Does this withstand scrutiny? Joseph Lawende gave his address as No. 45 Norfolk Road, Dalston at the inquest, and he had been there since around 1885. Is Dalston part of Aldgate's tight knit community? Even when Lawwende lived in the East End some years earlier it was in Tenter Street, which was south of Aldgate by over a quarter of a mile and there is nothing to show he was part of the "tight knit" community in Aldgate. He was a commercial traveler in tobacco; he was not a butcher. City Inspector McWilliam did give Lawende's address as 79 Fenchurch Street (the address that Phil Sugden used) which is much closer, but looking at the London directories this appears to have been a mere business address, with engravers, tailors, etc. operating out of the same building in the 1880s and 90s. The theory that men attending the same club on a Saturday night would know each other's cousins by sight is convenient to Ed's dismissal, but it is by no means logical or factual.

Well spotted
I am not convinced there were five and only five, and with that I think that opens up the probability there were different killers rather than a single serial killer... and that is why the police failed to catch any of them. I believe Lechmere/Cross definitely was the killer nearly caught red handed. But I am not discounting the possibility he or other possible suspects were responsible for other murders. For all we know, the newspapers made up the theory of a single serial killer to build hysteria and interest in the story... and there never was a single killer. The myth was born, and former police bought into it and promoted it later. Perhaps it was never one.
@jamiecheslo
Ай бұрын
That is a fascinating theory, and one I have heard others broach in the past. Not many people would even consider the possibility that there may have been more than one murderer. This is especially true when one expands the murders past the canonical five. I believe the tradition of Jack the Ripper being a single perpetrator is so engrained in our collective psyche since the beginning (largely due to mass media), that we have developed confirmation bias. Confirmation bias will never lead one to the truth.

If Schwartz was used by the police to identify levy - he must have killed stride. Interestingly the I'Ansons dont believe Stride was a Ripper victim. @thehouseoflechmere9407 Nine and a half stone will go a long way on a 5' 3" frame. You only have to imagine him wearing the right clothing, and a witness might plausibility describe him as stout. Of course, we must assume a two inch error in Schwartz's estimate of his height. That is on the upper limit of what is realistic. A store detective will generally call a person's height to within an inch, but Schwartz would have been much less experienced.

Just realised, this is the late JB's best friend. Small world!
I recently moved to a relatively small town in Oxfordshire. It doesn't take long for people to get to know your face, especially if you are a person of habit or work in the area. Whitechapel is not a huge place so you would assume that if Letchmere had been a delivery man for years, his face would have been fairly well known to the residents. Elizabeth long saw Annie Chapman with her killer at approximately 5:30, and said the man looked like a foreigner. Letchmere would have more than likely been recognised by her if he delivered on or near Hanbury street on a regular basis. To assume that Letchmere parked his cart up and murdered someone in a back yard is quite far fetched in my opinion.
@thehouseoflechmere9407
7 күн бұрын
That's if you think Elizabeth Long actually saw Annie Chapman. Approximately 80,000 people lived in Whitechapel alone. A big village.
Totally agree with you. I have always believed that Jack the Ripper could not be overtly mentally ill to the point they would of spent time in a asylum before or after the murders and I suspect that he did not have many and constant interactions with the Police and if he had dealings with the courts they would of been trivial. I also think that the thinking that the killer must of had some skill with knives and had anatomical knowledge beyond a person of average intelligence. He would of been a loaner and private, maybe married but would have very little interactions with anyone outside of his marriage but was not out of place in the area and seen often over a period of time.
Well, I admit that for many years now I thought that it was Jacob Levy because he seemed to fit the known facts. I am in Chicago and after watching you walk the streets at the actual locations I defer to your judgement as you are so deeply immersed in this. I'm not sure that I followed all of your arguments as you progressed very rapidly (and you talk fast). I have not yet looked at Charles Allen Lechmere but I will. It seemed to me that all five murders happened between sundown on Friday and dawn on Sunday, in other words the Jewish Sabbath. The first murder where the lady was discovered in the street near the hospital was not far from a previous murder (in July I think) and I suspected that "Jack" was deliberately trying to make a copycat murder to throw off the police. The other four murders "Jack" was seen. My suspicion was that "Jack" was very smart and followed the newspapers. There was a "red moon" during this period and also the Robert Louis Stevenson story of "The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" was a sensation. My suspicion was that "Jack" somehow contracted syphilis and believed that he got it from a prostitute. He knew the victims as a client and they knew him so that they did not suspect anything. The first murder on the "double event" I think that he attended the gathering at the hall and unexpectedly encountered the third victim when he came out (Elizabeth I think). He had been searching for her for weeks without success because she had been out of London for a while. He did not have his usual murder knife with him but killed her using a different knife that he carried for self defense. Then later the same night when he was with Catherine Eddowes he was seen by his cousin and knew that he had been recognized. He killed her anyway but then got spooked and went back into Whitechapel to leave a false trail away from his house. Someone else saw him leave the apron and kidney and that person wrote the comment with the chalk. The policeman was correct that it had not been there earlier when the policeman had passed by. I did not know about the visit to the relative's house nearby. "Jack" then wrote the "From Hell" letter. The Catherine and Mary murders were so gruesome because "Jack" was influenced by Jekyll/Hyde and wanted to convince the world that a monster like Mr. Hyde was responsible while he was nondescript and unassuming. That was his disguise. "Jack" waited about five weeks before the last (Mary) murder because he feared that he might be under police surveillance. The murders stopped because he killed all the women that he suspected. This was what I thought. I defer to your much more thorough examination. Forgive me it must be 20 years since I looked at this in detail and can't remember all the facts. You just happened to come up on my KZread recommendations and caught my eye. Levy may have been only trying to cover for the fact that his cousin frequented prostitutes. Not saying that is what happened. And it's highly unlikely. But a remote possibility, maybe. Similarly with the graves. The plots may have been bought beforehand or the burials done more out of a desire to colour over the past, the truth. Same with the dedications. Families are often driven to cover over their shame. My uncle, who killed his wife and was killed by the police, is buried in the family plot with a lovely dedication and no mention or allusion to what he did. People would rather forget such things. This is also not to say that is what happened. Just that there is that possibility. I don't think Levy was the killer because, by all reports, he was very noticeably disturbed and not someone even drunken women were likely to trust enough to go to dark places with. And the man that Lawende and the others see they all seem to agree was carrying on a comfortable conversation. I doubt Levy at that point would have been capable of prolonged comfortable conversations. As to the bloody rag, it was not small, but it also was not so large that one couldn't easily put it in a pocket or otherwise conceal it. Again, unlikely that someone would do such a thing. But we are not dealing with a fully rational mind. Did read the book, and the arguments are well thought out, but I just don't buy him or any other 'raving lunatic' as being capable of pulling these murders off. We make a mistake in placing weight on police suspects or theories. They had no experience or understanding of this kind of killing.

Good points
Hi ed good video very enjoyable, regarding lawende at the inquest,he said ' the man wore a cloth cap with a peak and was taller than she was'. City police solicitor then said ' unless the jury wish it i have a ' special reason ' why no further description should be given at this time'. The jury agreed to crawfords request. So there was no detailed description from lawende at the inquest it seems.

staking out the home of a butcher....or should that be steaking out? Another fine presentation Mr Stow. You do get about and it is worth it because its very interesting to see the asylums and streets and other locations as they are now, so i thank you for that dedication. It's still Lechmere all the way at present.
It was Francis Tumblety. He went under the radar because he was basically American.
It wasn’t Levy. End of story.
Would you consider an episode examining the assertion that H.H. Holmes is a viable Ripper suspect?

It was quite possibly a man named William Bury from Dundee, who killed his own wife.

Ed, since you live there .. I always wondered , how many % of your day is taken up by thinking about the case? It must be constantly on your mind trying to work it all out? I will be visiting Whitechapel soon, and whilst I’m there I won’t be able to stop thinking about it!

Well, assumption that the Ripper might've been insane is quite rational actually. First of all e.g. schizophrenics can show various degree of psychosis. Not all of them will show explicit erratic behaviour. Most of the time they may actually seem pretty harmless and normal. Secondly - even a very sick and in a state o psychosis can be successfull serial killer. Two examples: Richard Trenton Chase (Vampire of Sacramento) and Robert Napper (fellow London serial killer). Both of them were diagnosed as schizophrenics, both of them are very similar to Jack the Ripper. Lastly I think that psychopathy can be comorbid with schizophrenia. Actually everything points to Ripper being not very organized as an offender - involved in very risky behaviour.
As a Spurs fan, I think Daniel, I mean Jacob Levy seems a very likely suspect.

I'm American. I have an English friend, and she says she has a first-hand account that the ripper was an American doctor whose son went there to study, but he got with prostitutes the father took revenge .at that time, England was antisemitic and needed a scapegoat.

A “first hand account” from whom? These crimes happened in 1888. You mean she listened to yet another theory. And I have to say it’s one of the silliest theories I’ve heard.
Keminski proved by DNA.
Well rebutted. Strange how the outdated idea of a 'Jewish mad man' still persists when our knowledge of serial killers has moved on.

So Jewish people can never be serial killers?
Great video. I am constantly brought back to wondering how different the case would have been without the dimension of prejudice by the Police and the community. Perhaps I am oversimplify but it seems that with a brutal crime of this kind happening where it did and when it did then without any obvious solution the starting point was bound to be the assumption that A) he was mad and B) there was an 'otherness' to him and thst being jewish and 'foreign' would fit the bill.

Continuous Raving. I used to do that. Happy daze. 😂
But the big reveal is at the end of your video. They are all buried so close together!! Now this begs the question, if Jack the Ripper was a Jew, is it possible that some of these people wouldn’t know him? If so, could he have been “protected “ permanently by every one of them?
I muted the video when he said! I’m not very good at lip reading, anyone know what he was saying?
