    That liner acts as an "I" beam or wedge between the tang and a stop pin. And when you spine whacked it, it started to collapse the "I", and that's why the lock moves over farther than it should and it will forever have blade play. The liner material is completely insufficient.

    I’ll stick with my Manix ball bearing locks. I would have no worries spine whacking them. I think some of these companies use inferior internal materials - stop pins, liners, etc.

    G'day Aaron, not normally my thing but I dig the ascetic of the sheepsfoot job, ....... minus the thumb slot anyway. And yep the "reverse" dual grind doesn't do it any favors either; what on earth is that about, ..... are we missing something here, ...... the thick bit being so short at the handle end, surely its not meant to be a similar concept to Moras Kansbol and Eldris, LOL. I've got an old budget, CRKT Directive, (with liner lock), that I often throw around for fun, ..... in fairness it did start out around 30-ish % but lock up is still perfect @ 50%. It's a prime example of change for change's sake I reckon and indeed the marketing there of. Your spine whacking didnt appear to be particularly hard, maybe akin to dropping it from a meter or 2. Crikey, you'd expect a decent torch to hold up to that. For any folder to do that, ........ forget the 200+ USD, ....... you'd have to pay me to take it ...... and then bin it ; ) I'd keep the case though; .... perhaps that's why they come with such a robust case; ....... because they're so fragile ......... hehehe. Cheers Duke.

    That's a bummer a design like that has a such a failure... I agree with you as well regarding the compound grind. Why have the thicker part of the blade at the back of the blade? It would have been better as a tanto blade with the thicker grind up front to beef up the tip.

    Id think that the issue with the lockbar overtravel after some spinewhacks could be remedied by hardening the lockbar to a slightly higher hrc so it could withstand the force and spring back into place instead of holding a warp, that said context is important here, the lock didnt fail but after whacking it a couple times it developed play, is the knife still usable? Yes, is the result ideal? No, do liner and framelocks have utter failures with the same test? Yes...the data is great to have i just dont see this being an issue for casual users, hard users arent carrying their folders to beat on anyways theyre carrying a fixed blade or something made by demko, something thats interesting is that the longer ive owned my spydercos with the compression lock the more that lockbar travels by default so the people in the comments talking about it being a china issue just lack the ability to see from a broader perspective...just my 10 cents, thanks for testing these🍻

    First of all, a Wharncliffe blade is only good as a utility knife. cutting boxes etc. Vosteed has had this problem including the Thunderbird. Now they are trying axis locks etc. P**sy users will say lock doesnt matter. Well almost 30 years of deep camping and bowhunting says you can never take an unwarranted chance at injury. My wife got two fingers cut by a Kizer original BL serpape that collapses the blade with a tap. Kizer sent a new knife that was locked but this is an issue. Thanks for the vid!

    to the people saying there’s better knife options for that price point, that is a very subjective. it all depends on what youre looking for in a knife. this knife checks all the boxes for me personally and what I’ll be using it for. if you want something for hard use and to take with you in the bush, get something more durable then. I love this knife but I will agree that it is slightly over priced.

    I won’t use a folding knife for “heavy use” but honestly if I were to, it would be the buck 110 since they are tried and true, or the AD 15 for the scorpion because the harder you press or hold it, the stronger the lock. Seems pretty safe like that

    I think i have a picture on my channel of my failed ad15 lite lock. its a novelty design. this was a pre gsm cold steel, the warranty replacement was post gsm, and it is superior in every way, grinds and final bevel was symetrical vs the old cold steel. the recon 1 in s35vn is still my favorite knife, a very large yet thin usable blade.

    Lock issues aside. Blade style is not my cup of tea. If it were, the lock issue would be a deal breaker. Not because I'd ever wack on the blade but, to me, it wont stand up to the test of time. Something in the mechanism is either tempered incorrectly or is the wrong material to use. Especially at that price range, thats unacceptable.

    It's a cool looking Instagram knife. That's about it. I respect the designer a lot. But going to these China OEM's means you end up selling an inferior product that's going to have some kind of issue since they rush them out of factory XYZ to jump on the latest hype trend in time to sucker a bunch of FOMO people out of their money. And then it's yesterday's news and all of them end up on the secondary at bargain bin prices because, shocker, nobody wants them anymore. Wash, rinse, repeat. Thanks for the cautionary tale, Aaron 👍

  • @thomasrobarts2399
    @thomasrobarts23992 ай бұрын

    Lol I've seen spine wack fails in expensive knives too especially the benchmade adamas,but to be honest spine wack testing isn't something I do. I've always been of the mind that if I'm doing something hard use that's fixed blade territory.,but if I had to have a hard use knife I trusted to do that with..triad lock for sure..my spyderco pm2 compression lock has never been a problem either.,but failure with liner locks,and button locks seems the be fairly common. Usually equates to geometry of surfaces or weak materials,but most people won't subject their edc knives to the point of failure in test like that especially if the knife has a premium price..one benchmade I know personally won't fail is the persidio ii in cf elite its been damn near driven sideways through a 2x4,and from what I've seen spine wack doesn't phase it at all,but that's an axis lock..so..draw what you will from that conclusion.

    Because of the angle of the tip, if you were pushing tip first into anything I think there’s a greater chance of it closing on your hand. A weak lock would bother me less if it wasn’t a sheep’s foot / wharcliffe. Weird choice to put out one of each of those. Good info, pass on this one.

    I remember when this knife was the hottest, hype-est release and it was sold out everywhere. Then they had to change the name. Then you never heard of it again once that hype went away and every body bought into it hook, line, and sinker. These CPOS knives are meant for instagram EDC dump pictures. Not for use, whether that's hard or light. They (CCP) are very good at marketing to flavor-of-the-week trends in online communities. Avoid CPOS knives if you want a reliable knife. Or heck, just a knife you can actually take pride in owning and showing off 😎👊

    It’s funny you brought up WE as a comparison. These seem to follow the WE concept of form over function. Everything revolves around design and aesthetics. That’s fine for folks who want pocket jewelry and want to show off their $400 folder. You made the mistake of actually testing it as a functional knife. No, you aren’t missing anything trying to figure out the reverse compound grind. Stop trying to assign function to form! It’s all for looks. Truthfully, it was all the buy-American critics who created these Chinese monsters. For a decade, everyone was screaming about Asian makers “stealing” designs and making “counterfeit” blades. Okay. So now they are doing/producing their own designs. Does that make everyone happy? Does a 100% original design guarantee a good knife, or just a pretty knife?
