Wish Oakland could have captured the energy the audience generated during this song! They'd still be supplying electricity throughout the city with it! MOST DEFINITELY THE LIVE VERSION HAS MORE VIM. Believe San Fran had several years of summer-time concert groupings, "A DAY ON THE GREEN," this being one of them. This was inside Oakland Stadium (baseball); the lineup: Day On The Green #4 & 5: Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana, Outlaws (July 2 & 4, 1977).

Piano player was first a roadie. During a break the band came back to the studio and heard him playing his own take on Free Bird. The rest of the band, to mean Ronnie, loved it so much they invited him into the band and included him into the 2 Free Bird keyboard solos. Turns out their Roadie piano player was classically trained and just wanted to be a part of a rock band.

I was at this concert. It was called a “Day on the Green” since it was at the coliseum. They used to have up to 4-5 bands in one day and they would put on their shows for 3 days. On this date it was Elvin Bishop, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyd and Peter Frampton.

Yeah, it was called A Day on the Green. There were 3 or 4 bands I believe. Skynyrd played before Peter Frampton who was the final act. Gary Rossington was playing the slide guitar. Allen Collins was in all white. Burns left the band in 74 or 75 and they had added Artimus Pyle as their new drummer. Also, Steve Gaines in the red pants was added after Ed King left in 74. Leon Wlikeson on bass, Billy Powell on Piano, and of course Ronnie Van Zant on vocals. Burns and King who had left band by the time this concert was recorded in 1977 were on the studio version which was released in 1973.

The only ones still alive are Gary Rossington and drummer Artemis Pyle. Allen was paralyzed a few years later and died of pneumonia, Leon was found deceased in a hotel and foul play was suspected. Ronnie, Steve and Cassie died in the crash. The piano player had his nose almost totally removed in the crash and he later died of natural causes.

I wish they would show both Artemis and Leon more, but there's some decent footage of both in this. There is some point where they film them all lined up and Leon is just out there just being the savage beast that he is. And this guy had so much endurance and he played so hard. And Lynyrd Skynyrd played really long shows. Check out sometime their live recording from their double live album one from the road not long before the plane crash. Stephen Gaines was new on that tour and that's a lot of fun. But man if you check out there Jimmy Rogers cover called t for texas, just listen to the bassline on that. It just blows me away every single time how much endurance that guy has and how hard he plays. He was so damn good.

The place crash was Oct 20,1977. They lost Ronnie, Steve (guitarist), Cassie ( Steve's sister and backup singer) assistant road manager, copilot and pilot died. 20 others survived. Cause was ran out of fuel. I saw them this past summer, they were good but not the same without Ronnie, Steve, and Billy who passed away 2009 of a heart attack. They did a tribute to them. On numerous occasions he proclaimed that he would never reach his 30th birthday, and that he was going to go out with his boots on - in other words, on the road, zoom Johnny Van Zant revised the band in 1987.

My family moved around a lot when I was a kid. We had the good fortune to end up living in Jacksonville, Fl in the 70's and 80's. I went to the same high school as Allen Collins so needless to say these guys were our heroes! News of the plane going down felt very personal! I remember the announcement coming over the intercom at school between classes. The last couple of classes of that day were a waste. The teachers didn't even really try to teach anything, just gave us all space to process our emotions in a productive setting!! Kudos to them for that!

They all grew up here in Jacksonville Florida. Went to high school here. Practiced here and made themselves out to be one of the world's greatest southern rock bands here. Even named their band after the high school coach who stayed on their asses Bout the way they dressed and their hair. Leonard Skinner. They are even buried here. Now being friends that close, they never saw each other as divided at all. Just a group of friends. All equal. Can you imagine how much more great music they could have put out if they were still with us. Ronnie's wife stated after the last original band member passes, Leonard Skynard will be no more. Billy Powell is all that's left, I think.

I’ve learned so much respect for Billy Powell. He was a ROADIE who had classical training and was literally just noodling around one day on a piano within earshot of the band and as I understand it, wasn’t very long before he was in the band. And he MAKES this band. Like Benmont Tench in Tom Petty, the guitarists and singers get all the glory but all the depth and boogie and elevation of the sound comes from him. Check out live versions of Call me The Breeze and he goes to TOWN.

Ronnie VanZant came up to me (Billy Powell) and said, ‘You mean to tell me, you’ve been playing the piano like that and you’ve been workin’ for us for a year….’, And I said, ‘Well, you know, I’ve been classically trained most of my life.’ So, right then and there, he said, ‘We need a keyboard player.

If you think it's eerie watching a video they made 3 months before the plane crash, read THIS: Amongst the documentaries out there about Lynyrd Skynyrd, there's one where they film Ronnie Van Zant's father talking about him. He tells how he used to encourage Ronnie to take up an interest in a different career, something more stable. He said, "I'd ask him things like, 'What are you gonna be doing when you're 30? This rock'n'roll thing can't last forever,' and Ronnie would look at me and say, "Dad, I ain't gonna live to see 30', and I'd tell him "Aw, Ronnie don't talk like that...." Ronnie Van Zant was 29 years old when he died. He would have turned 30 on January 15th, 1978. The plane crash was less than three months before his birthday.

I like your reactions because you are so observant, it's really cool. Yeah there's a lot of misinformation there, so what you have to realize is this song is from their very very first album, the so-called pronounced album, several years before this performance. And that became a huge radio hit and this was before they were super big you know and so Bob Burns played the drums and back then they also had three guitarists just like they do now because you've always had Gary Rossington and Alan Collins which you did correctly identify by the way. But you also had Ed King who helped write a lot of those early songs. And then I forget his name but there was another guy playing bass initially before Leon joined but the main thing was when they took off, suddenly they just went from regional touring to heavy heavy schedule of national touring and ultimately overseas stuff as well. And so Ed King and Bob Burns just really didn't want the stress of that and being on the road. They mostly wanted to be at home. So yeah for the longest time Artemis Pile is the beloved drummer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Leon is the beloved bass guitar player, and they cruised for quite a while with only two guitarists Rossington and Collins, and then not long before this show and the plane crash and all that stuff, they picked up Steven Gaines who was a young and upcoming phenomenal guitarist. Check out the song, I Know a Little, it's from their last studio album before the plane crash, Street Survivors. His guitar work on that is incredible.

Ronnie wasn't the only one to die in the plane crash, there were others and then there were extensive injuries also. But the band effectively ended right then. It was over all the sudden. Yeah they kind of tried to reformulate and do it and they still try but it's basically a tribute band and not real Lynyrd skynyrd. Most fans say that street survivors and the double live album one more from the road are their last two albums before the plane crash and then that's when it was over. I was in around 9th grade and really into them and I was utterly devastated. I can't tell you how much. Thankfully they left a rich catalog behind for us to enjoy.

Great reaction! My only complaint is that I wish the cameraman would have spent more time close up on Allen's bone crunching guitar solo.

Bob Burns was not the drummer in 1977. He left band in 1974 after seeing movie Exorcist and started seeing things and had mental breakdown. Artemius Pyle took over

Check out Skynyrds Freebird at Knebworth. It's even better and check out where Allen does his solo and the story behind the opening bands that opened for the Stones not supposed to go out on the tongue of the stage .

Your studio vs. Live logic is spot on, but unfortunately many of your peers don't adhere to that. But since your/their audience almost always heard the studio first on the radio, you guys should get the same experience as we did I believe. It makes the most sense for first time listeners, and you're right, the studio is always clear/precise and we here it exactly how they wanted us to here it.

This is great but unfortunately about 2 minutes or more of the solo is cut out of the end of this unfortunately. I would suggest to watch the knebworth version 1976 Freebird opening for Rolling Stones. There is even a tiny bit of the solo cut out at the end of that one but gives an even better depiction of just how great the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band really was, and Allen Collins stepped on the end of the Tongue of the Stones and set it ablaze!

Wow, I hadn't made the time connection between this performance and RVS death. Kinda puts this video in a different vibe for me now. Not in a negative way, just more appreciative that it exists. And lets all give a shout out to RVS's impressive beer gut! ❤ And if the girl in the yellow shorts ever sees this, girl i know you were caked in Noxzema post show. I feel your pain.

Who was Free Bird written about? Lyrical Meaning. When “Free Bird” was released, some fans speculated that it was a tribute to Duane Allman, the Allman Brothers Band guitarist who passed away in 1971. The guitar riffs at the end are reminiscent of Allman's, causing people to believe it was about him

There are 2 examples that I know of, where the live version had a better reception from the critics than the studio version and that's, Bob Seger's "Turn The Page" and Kiss's "Rock and Roll All Night". Maybe it has to do with the way crowd makes them feel, I don't know.
