As a manga/anime fan whose favorite crew member is Usopp, he definitely was underserved. His position in the crew as sniper, tinker, Luffy's best friend, and "the normal guy" wasn't given time at all. I hope he gets his due in Season 2 because he is integral to the story and deserves a lot more love.

@@ClearCritique I get your feeling, Usopp was not done justice at all. %70 of his screen time was deleted. In Arlong Park arc Usopp normally has a lot of self-doubt moments. He runs away from the fight at first and plans to act like he did his best, he only later comes back after the fishman after feeling deep shame and only then manages to beat it. In Live action he hits a bottle and wins. 😂

@@ClearCritique Usopp is supposed to be a character that exemplifies Courage. He's a coward tall tale telling coward but in the original source material, he rose through his fears and fight because he wanted to protect the ones that he cares about while Cliche is still a remarkable trait to have. Also unlike Luffy, Zoro & later Sanji, Usopp was never a fighter but he rarely back down from a fight especially if the adversaries dared to badmouth his friends especially Luffy. Usopp acted as a friend with Luffy to do idiot things with and have fun all around which nami and Zoro could not provide.

First of all, I agree with all of your ratings and rankings. just wanted to clarify some things. Buggy calls Luffy pathetic, but in reality, he's the pathetic one. He's supposed to only be scary until you fight him. Don't worry, he'll be pathetic for the rest of the series. Kuro's plan didn't work because he can't adapt to situation. He's inflexible, as opposed to luffy. In the manga, there was a huge emphasis with his glasses, and how it represented his fixed wordview that he had so many chances to change, but didnt. As for Usopp in the manga, he was far more useful. He made a stand, fought a ton of pirates by himself (still got his ass beat bloody, but he really tried), and even made the finishing blow to save kaya. In fact, theres a moment where Luffy decides Usopp is on the crew: it's after Usopp goes to warn the village about pirates, but they dont believe him. Then, Usopp decides, even though he's so afraid he's shaking, he's gonna make that truth he told into a lie, so that the village keeps not believing him. Nami's flashback suffered major changes. First of all, they had all the events in her backstory happen all at once, killing the pacing, and the original had the flashback mixed in with Nami working for the Fishmen, including "killing" usopp and drowning zoro, but secretly saving them when the fishmen weren't looking. The townspeople knew her backstory, but didn't tell nami because they wanted her to not have any attachment to her in case the fishmen made her lose hope (and then it happened, causing them to go march to their death so that they could force nami to at least run away). Luffy also never learned about nami's backstory, he slept through it cuz all he knew is that he doesn't let anyone threaten his friends. The toast with their legs was a small change, they originally smashed the barrel with their legs as the send off instead of whooping. usopp is my favorite strawhat, but i understand why most people hate him until later, when he grows and changes as a person. I don't want to say exactly how, but i will say that he never strays too far into superpowers because he's the most human member of the crew. he's working with what he has to become one of the most competent crewmembers (except for maybe later a guy that laughs YOHOHOHO)

They wrote out a whole bunch of Ussop's scenes compared to the anime and manga, and swapped a lot of it out with more Kaya scenes. Overall, that was a pretty good change, and Merry somehow survived being gutted like a fish in the manga/anime. Honestly, if they had actually made Zoro's wound bleed anymore than it did, it would be very hard to imagine him actually waking up from that in a few days.

I really don’t think anyone’s “pretending”. Many reactors and reviewers reacting to the series without any prior knowledge of the anime, really enjoyed the show, and got extremely invested into pretty much every character. The moments you counted as “melodrama” in episode 7, actually got many people emotional, and pumped them up to want Arlong to get his due. I think that’s a bit of a difference between reviewing something from a “writer’s” perspective and a random audience member watching it as a “just along for the ride” experience. You may see it as “predictable” or “done a million times” but I don’t think that’s the point. I think for most people it isn’t JUST about it being “fresh and new” but about 2 other things ‘execution’ and ‘investment’. Even if a storyline technically may have been done before just in a different way, if the audience already gets invested into the characters, they don’t see the storyline, they just see the characters, and want to see them come out of that situation, despite the “story” maybe being played out. It’s also if the beats were executed well enough (which for most people it seems it was). I’m not saying that people should give legitimately poorly written scenes or series a pass, but the proof is kinda in the pudding. Someone may say, “that emotional scene was poorly written”, but hundreds of other people break down from that same scene. In which case, it did its job in making (most of) the audience, feel what it was trying to make them feel. What’s interesting is that we don’t have to wonder “What do people think of these scenes, does this actually work or not?” Because we have people giving their live first impressions, all over the internet. (And yes, I know people can easily fake reactions in videos or overact over things. But I’m talking about real reactors who you can tell have a genuine excitement or emotional investment into what they’re watching.) Even then, many of those people also don’t think the show is 100% flawless, but some are still more receptive over some aspects you didn’t like (like Ussop). This obviously isn’t to discredit your personal critique and thoughts on the show. You have your own perspective. But what may not have worked for you, definitely worked for others.

2:18 At least in the anime, he doesn’t think he’s invincible. In the very first episode, he makes a speech about how, if he dies trying to achieve his dream, he’ll accept it because at least he tried his best. So he knows he can be killed. He’s just *extremely* optimistic.

Honestly a fair assessment! I find Zoro struggles to live up to his manga/anime counterpart and a big part of that is the let down of episode 4 :( and his "moment" at the end of episode 5 - doesn’t come across the same in live action and I wonder how they could of rewritten it if they were brave enough. I appreciated what they did with Kuro from the spooky killer angle but yea everything else about the arc just suckked... Ussopp is a good goof, he grows and has an interesting dynamic with Nami as a 'normal human' but his s1 appearance is v mid - especially compared to Luffy/Sanji's charisma on screen. A good foundation overall, but time will tell if they can carry it forward!

Flashback is necessary if Netflix builds up for more seasons and Usap is also needed for that too. Think again to books. The show works bc it’s staying with manga and story. So if they go by you think this show fails miserably and right back to find a new base material. No. I was a new one to watch this but understood immediately that certain things had to be done and kept for later episodes as in characters or world building. We have to know the past so later when the world of One Piece gets bigger (grand line) they can benefit from it. Shanks gets back and we know the story already. So it’s enough to mention. It’s a very good idea to built references now. They plan 6 seasons already. As of mixed things the grand line is way modern than medieval hence the mixed tech. One Piece is not a medieval fantasy. It’s manga.

I'm having a lot of fun with One Piece, but it is definitely flawed. Luffy's optimism is a breath of fresh air, and I'm glad to see they let things be bizarre and unnatural in an attempt to capture the spirit of the anime and manga, but it feels that they aren't going far enough most of the time. It is also interesting to see a story that started over twenty five years ago recreated like this, but that does also create some problems like what the video discussed with episode 4. It is a good foundation, and I'm glad people seem to be responding well to it.

While a bit harsh, I felt that you're evaluation of the series is fair. One piece would have been the project that would make or break Netflix Anime adaptation project especially it's position in it's fan hearts. However as a fan, I believe that I've given it a pretty lenient scoring probably due to nostalgia but most importantly, it was a really great adaptation to the source material. They did well to compress what would have been 60+ episodes into 8 episode long story, while maintaining most of the crucial part to ensure that continuity issue is reduced for future series. In regards to the predictability and the flashback, this is inherent from the original story and Oda the author have used it to a master class level. He knows when to include a flashback and to ensure the length of it doesn't detract from the main story line. Alas In regards to Usopp, It's not that Netflix butchered his character in the LA series, it's more that he lacks time to develop. He's main role is the marksmen of the crew, however he acts more like a brother to Luffy whom he'll do dumb stuffs together. He's not as strong as Luff, Zoro and Sanji so he relates more to Nami and began to create weapons for both of them to cope with future battles.

I think you can substitute the word 'genre' here with 'trope' which basically means overused themes or story elements. It fits your examples here like 'the butler did it', because it is common in the mystery genre. Genre is more the general category of a story for example One Piece uses pirates as the main plot and story so it's in the pirate genre. Since it's action and comedy oriented it's also a part of those genres.

East Blue is by far the weakest part of the entire story. It laid the groundwork for everything that followed, but short of Nami's arc and Zoro's fight the rest of it is pretty weak. Once they get to Lougetown and then into the Grand Line thats when the story actually opens up. Ussop is pretty terrible until Water Seven and Thriller Bark and then hes awful again until super late in the story. Nami's arc in the manga is much more fleshed out and allowed to breath than the show presented which is why a lot of people mark it as one of the highest moments in the entire series.

He is so pathetic that during a particular arc way down the line it actually becomes really enjoyable to see him and that arc literally turned him into a beloved character by fans.

@HelenaSan425 thats some brain dead logic, so one piece aint anime now because a majority of its artist are in france? Castlevania, The Daily Life of the Immortal King, The King’s Avatar, solo leveling. All none japanese based and most studios outsource globally. Seems like brain dead logic in the morden world

Definitely not an anime 🤣🤣🤣 it’s a whole cartoon with a super childish narrative without layers like one piece! It’s comical to put avatar in the same sentence
