You have to realize that Nami made the agreement to buy back her village when she was 10 years old. Not the wisest agreement with a pirate but she was desperate and young.

Actually in the anime wat happened is arlong saw her talent in map making already so he kind of threatened, enticed her and beat her up until she agreed with the deal, reality is so far more twisted than wat was depicted in the LA, honestly one piece could have very well been seinen if the author wanted to, he just didnt take that last step to jump over to seinen and stuck in shounen

yeah he seemed to really misinterpret Nami's actions in general. Seems to think she was going around killing innocent people.

Just for a correction, Arlong has the highest bounty in East blue. 1 of the 4 oceans. Mihawk has a bounty far exceeding that before it was canceled. Mihawk is like a capped level player going back to the tutorial area. The marines figured it would be safer to have these super powerful pirates be called "warlords" and not be hunted.

Maybe this can make Nami's story make more sense to you: in the original, Arlong and his crew kidnap her right after they kill her mother because they find the map she made. Then, Arlong is the one to come up with the deal. If she works for him and makes maps for him, she can buy her village back for a certain amount of money. It's the way he finds to trap her.

im not going to lie im a huge one piece fan (the manga) but i kinda prefer it being her choice it adds a lot to the character, shows her intelligence and makes sense cause she watched him destroy everything and kill her mother who was a badass ex marine like its nothing she knew it couldn't be taken by force so she used her only leverage her being able to make maps as a in to someday free the village its the kind of thing modern oda would do cause he only got better at tragedy as things went on he also had to okay it so i would love to know his thoughts on it. i also prefer the villagers not knowing cause it makes more sense to me cause the reason they didnt tell her in the manga is cause "they wanted her to feel like she could abandon them and that they were not relying on her" but they should of known she would never do that so it only destroys her support network and makes things harder, her not telling people in the LA makes sense cause again he terrifies her and knows first hand what would happen as for what was cut the stuff with Hatchan and his seacow would of been great to see but im not to upset and the overall focus staying on namis story makes sense i prefer all the LA over the anime cause the anime is heavily censored for children (oda said so in a SBS) and butchered sanjis backstory as a result, it also has the worst pacing ive ever seen and made usop insufferable thats my thoughts anyway

@@imalittletoxicjustalittle Why should they have known that though? They deliberately treated her badly so that she WOULDN'T feel beholden to them, feel like they were friends/family. To make it easier for her to abandon them if she felt it was too much. Unfortunately for them, Nami is about as stubborn as her captain and willing to put in all the effort to save their asses even if she thought they hated her and they treated her terribly. She made the choice to continue despite the bad treatment she got because her memories of before were strong enough to push her through the hard times and because her morality wouldn't let her just let people _she_ loved die - even if they didn't love her back (which they did, though she didn't know that). I think it's such a great part of her story that she and they held so much love for each other that even when it was hidden away, it still held so strong. I like the live action a lot, but I feel that Nami's story in the manga was better. I think they're both great though and am glad so many resonate with her story even in the lesser version - it shows just how wonderful a character she is that changes to her story still work.

Prior to her striking the deal, nothing was shown that she even knew HOW to draw maps, just that she LIKED them. Nothing was shown that Arlong NEEDED a map cartographer. So how does Nami know that "she has something he wants"? That he even interested in negotiation? It's a guess that works out in her favor. Not even an educated guess. What made her ever think that he was EVER an honorable person to begin with? The person that shot your mother dead in front of you? That's not intelligence. There's nothing to suggest that that would ever be a good idea. It seems like writers didn't want to make Nami 3 times the victim. 1 with becoming an orphan. 2 being kidnapped. 3 being manipulated. Instead they made her seem...in my opinion...rather stupid. Granted the naive of an 8yo but still stupid. When Bellamere said, "would you take that money for my daughters?" That would have been the right time for Arlong to state, "I'm a Fishman of my word. I never go back on it". That would at least explain why Nami thought a deal COULD be made for Coco Village.

The thing about Garp was that at the start he legit wanted to stop Luffy from becoming a pirate so he tried to catch him/ scare him into quitting before he got a bounty, because he didnt want him to end up executed like Roger. However, after his talk with Coby he accepted that Luffy was just never gonna stop, so he just opted to test his resolve one final time by putting him in a situation against someone that he just couldnt win against nor run away. Afterwards, he let him go but made him understand that he couldnt use his rank to protect him any longer and bid him farewell.

I absolutely loved this show- laughing one minute and tearing up the next. The cast, scenery and effects were just perfect!

I honestly can't wait to see the training Coby and Helmeppo go through with Garp. They become absolute badasses and grow so much as time passes in the anime, so I want to see how they do it in the live-action.

26:04 Technically he's Spanish - well, his mum's from Yorkshire, his dad (I think) is Lebanese, but the actor himself (Taz Skylar) grew up on the Canary Islands in Spain. So he speaks Spanish and English pretty fluently. He's written an off-West-End play, and took up cooking and kickboxing just to prepare for this role.

Correct, arlong ain't tougher than mihawk. In this first season, Mihawk is like a lvl 500 wandering around in a area full of lvl 20s.

@@Welchy for some extra context Arlong was the biggest bounty in the East Blue and as Nami said there are 3 other "blues" (north, West and South) plus the grandline (which is also divided in 2). East is the weakest sea, so be it Zoro being famous there or Arlong bounty they dont really matter in the bigger world. on the other hand Mihawk and Garp are big names in the strongest area

Zoro is a fan favorite even in anime. His character is really cool and badass. Mackenyu, the actor, is a popular Japanese actor who is also the son of a late famous actor and martial artist in Japan.This is why he is used to sword fights and martial arts too. What I like about Zoro in this live action is he's a pretty boy badass. Haha.

I do appreciate how you don't automatically assume everyone ate a devil fruit just because they can do impressive things. You would be surprised how many people make that mistake. In this part of the world devil fruits are very rare. I won't spoil the details of course. I'll just say in this world you can train yourself to do some crazy techniques. Mihawk cutting a ship or flinging people. Koro using a dash move. All these are examples of non-devil fruit powers. The world of one piece is vast.

Besides Nami being young, it is worth remembering that fishmen in general have a pretty tough physique. Ordinary humans stand no chance in a physical confrontation. Even something like a sneak attack by trying to stab the heart while they sleep is unlikely to work because penetrating that skin is no easy task. So the only option she had left to try to protect her 'treasure' (the villagers) was to play by his rules, and Arlong's crew treats money as its bottom line to be honest about.. so she was led to believe that he'd honor the deal he offered her. Alas. Morals are flexible, and if it is the rat stealing the money before she can give him the money...

it is rather clear in the anime tho that if nami wouldve succeeded in some way at bringing the money to arlong he wouldve honored the deal as he promised it on his honor as fishman but he used very specific wording that enabled him to try his hardest to prevent her from succeeding

To be honest Nami's story is a little better told in the anime, as they slightly changed some things for the Live Action, but overall the same emotions exist. She has a tragic childhood, forced to make maps for Arlong, who used her village and the fake promise as a way to keep her working. Plus, keeping her from running away because she knows he would kill everyone if she did. She was never a horrible person, but puts up a front as one. They show this more so at different points like the horror of seeing what Buggy did to the one town, fixing Luffy's hat, her guilt from stealing from Usopp's friend, or her concern for Zoro. Also, having Arlong throw Luffy in the sea instead of killing him because she knew someone could rescue him. In the anime more so then the Live Action, the villagers knows she's a good person and the true reason for working with Arlong. Ultimately if Luffy hadn't come along she might have been stuck in a cycle that never ended and wasted her life away trying to buy back her village.

The order of events and some minor details left out made it quite a bit darker in the manga/anime.

Garp literally does things for shits and giggles even in anime 😭😭 he is uncurable

Some clarifiers: Arlong had the highest bounty in the East Blue; Mihawk is not from the East Blue. His bounty (before being cancelled) was much much higher than 30Mil Mihawk & Shanks are indeed old friends, they used to be dueling partners essentially. Shanks is not dead, he is waiting for Luffy to find him when he becomes a famous pirate (which is a very very long way off from where we are now) Glad to see you enjoyed the show, I can't wait to see if you get into the Anime/Manga!

The problem with Nami is that she felt like she had to do it all alone. And she got to the point where she couldn’t save anyone anymore and she asked for help. Asking for help being the biggest growth of her character to this point.

they went so hard on the LA even with some changes here and there to the story of the anime. Singlehandedly restored my hope in LA's I was really bracing myself for another ATLA quality and was pretty scared to go and watch it myself, but this was just such a breath of fresh air. We need so much more of this!!

Luffy is Peter Pan and his crew are the Lost Boys, and no one can convince me otherwise.

The end of Season 2 is where we'll be introduced to the REAL plot. I can't wait to see you freak out when you see Miss All Sundays' power.

In the anime and manga, they said that Kuina (Zoro’s childhood friend) died from falling down the stairs.

I often feel that One Piece is underestimated by casual viewers/readers. Some aspects of its storytelling are genius, especially considering the story has spanned over 20 years. Small details introduced five years ago can become crucial to the narrative. And, given the brevity of the live-action adaptation, I believe they did an excellent job capturing that aspect of the storytelling. The blend of styles-comedy, drama, intrigue, and world-building-is also one of my favorite aspects of One Piece. All the actors delivered great performances, but I must especially applaud Emily Rudd for her portrayal in the 'help me' scene as Nami. It's the moment I became a fan of the manga years ago, and it still resonated with me in the live action. Glad you enjoyed the show :)

You practically need one to survive on the Grand Line in this universe, wether it's a Devil Fruit power or something else (what we saw Shanks do to the Sea King to scare it off). 'What's stronger than her?' Stairs. A flight of stairs killed Kuina. I'm not even joking, she fell down a flight of stairs and died (presumably she broke her neck).

i cant express how happy it makes me to see people enjoying one piece. the live action really only elevated the series.

I’ve never seen someone guffaw himself beet red so much in one reaction and I’m here for it.

First time I saw Netflix itself saying "It's official, next season is coming" Got my subscription only for this show recently.

Arlong was the strongest in the East Blue Sea (the weakest of the four seas). Mihawk's reputation spans the entire world especially in the Grand Line. Mihawk is a God compare to Arlong.

So, saying this, because this is actually bothering me a little about the LA (one of my nitpicks, if you will). In the manga, Nami is actually kidnapped when the Arlong pirates find her map and _he_ is the one suggesting the deal. She collects 100 million berri and she can buy the village back and no one else will be killed, in the mean time, she works for Arlong, drawing him maps. The difference to me is that pirates are obviously inherently seen as untrustworthy, so I find it unlikely that a girl would think of such a deal on her own, while it's far more likely that a desperate, lonely, scared girl (she was 10, ftr) would believe a person, no matter how hateful, when a tempting offer was brought up.
