As an Indonesian, I was taught in history classes how the Dutch and Japanese conquered our country. Islamic teachings were accepted by the population because they were delivered in a peaceful manner. In Indonesia, people are free to practice any religion they choose; in fact, our government acknowledges these religious holidays (regardless of which religion they adhere to) as days-off.

hii, a bit of a correction here. people are not exactly free to practice any religion they choose as they are only 5 recognized religion. i.e. if you were to be a jew you couldn’t input judaism as your religion in official records, rather it would just be left blank. and you will not provided with formal religious education beside the aforementioned religions. cheers

Hi Indonesian here, Indonesia is very diverse country with 6 recognized religion. Yes, there are scratchy up-side down relations JUST LIKE IN EVERY COUNTRY INCLUDING IN THE US AND GREECE AND INDIA, but that's it. We are mostly living peacefully together AND YES THE OTHER RELIGIONS CAN PRACTICE THEIR RELIGION PEACEFULLY.

@The_ Jizyah perang paderi doesnt have anything to do with the spreading of islam during the early 14th century.. thats just some civil and local conflicts which some community groups which had just newly embraced islam wouldng want to adhere to islamic custom. Has nothing to do with how indonesia became islam. And now, alhamdulillah, west sumatra is a very islamic and religious province of indonesia

Then, the report it self clearly stated the community didnot granted the proposal. If the officials didnot stand with minority, you said it oppression. Whilst the us government it self was secular. Allah says in the Noble Qur'an Al-Baqarah 2:256 "There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Yep. I checked as well. There is no History Course there. In the Bachelors and Masters section there is a Culture Module but nothing states History or Islam or Romans etc. This guy is clearly winging it aka lying.

I am Indonesian, and I have been to Bali, and what I admire in Bali is that there are 5 places of worship of different religions side by side and maintaining tolerance. If you go to Bali you will see an area occupied by many adherents of Hinduism and Buddhism. If you go to Papua you will see lots of Christians, and if you go to Aceh You will see the areas governed by Islamic law. And Islam is comprehensive throughout Indonesia because of its beauty.

The fact: Christianity spread in Indonesia through colonization with weapons and plundering Indonesian wealth is the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and British. The strongest spreading of Christianity in Indonesia is the Portuguese.

I am a south east asian. Arabs never conquered us, nor did they force Islam upon our forefathers. Our forefathers reverted to Islam with all their hearts. European only manage to convert part of The Philippines to Catholicism.

There is no barabarism there at all. Alhamdulillah.. I'm from Indonesia, we live together here in peace and harmony, side by side with our brother and sister from another religion.

I love how in this comment section our Indonesian brothers and sisters told how islam came to their country peacefully alhumdulillah. May Allah swt guide us all to the straight path AMEEN.

This Historian has a clear bias about Islam because Islam was spread by trade in Indonesia. It is basic knowledge, he should have known as a Historian. It was good that Sheikh embarrass him in this point. I am not sure from where these people are learning lies about Islam.

There is an applied science university called Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz, but there is no faculty for history or any other related courses. There is a list of educational facilities on the city of Görlitz's website, but none of them offer a history course. I also looked through the staff list of all faculties at Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz, but our so-called historian was nowhere to be found. Historian?! Sure!

In Indonesia, Churches stand beside, infront of mosques. In Bali, Temples stand beside, infront of mosques. Never ever Hindu in Bali have trouble practice their religion. When Hindu become majority religion like in India, muslims have been oppressed, bullied, killed and have problems practicing Islam

He may not be up to speed on Indonesian history, but it does not follow from that he should therefore convert to Islam. The Koran is not a historically credible document.

egypt was conquered by rome in what around 50 bc? and was liberated* by islam by about 6-7 centuries later that is a long time to consider it a conquest especially since they had been christians for at least 2-4 hundred years and been persecuted because of their own brand of it, even so it was not liberated* just conquered in turn by muslims and then converted to islam.

Shiekh usman, you have a huge tolerance in dealing with stupid and ignorant what so called historians... I swear to God I could easily end this conversation before it even starts... Avoiding looking to sheikh usman and talking to the other guy to receive recognition...

You are unjustified, however, is assuming that the gentleman is therefore lying. Lying entails knowingly propagating an untruth. You don't know that he's doing this. Indonesia's stance on religious freedom is little more than nominal, and non-Muslims are frequently the subject of religious harassment and discrimination. I suggest you read the Indonesia 2018 International Freedom Report, which reveals that Indonesia's record in this regard is little better than that of Muslim countries in general.
