I'd say it was. There are tons of little things in the show that really enhanced it for me even tho I think the game is kinda better overall. Also smtg else I like about the tv show is that due to it many ppl have come to realize the storytelling potential of games which is great. Excited for your thoughts!

My mother just does not like video games. She'll sit and watch Game of Thrones through, but 5 minutes of the tutorial of *this* game, and she was bored out of her mind. My brother and I both love the story, we've told her it's one of the best. She sat down for the show and she finally saw that, after a decade of us telling her about how good this game was, how good the story was. And she appreciated it fully.

I'm not a video game player, and had never heard of 'The Last of Us', until all the buzz surrounding the series began. As to the question of whether or not video games can be 'art'; although I've not played any games, it seems to me that any medium used to express an idea, a thought, a feeling, or experience - and done with talent and imagination - can produce works of art. I don't see why some of these games couldn't be classified as art - especially when the public has such a reaction (good and bad) about the medium.

Great review. I want to reflect on the charge that episode 3 and 7 were “filler”. I will disregard the fact that I love these episodes for their own virtues. Instead, I will focus a bit about their role in the narrative structure, character development, and the much abused term, “themes” of the show. Episode three has a structural purpose for introducing Tess and Joel, in the context of their life of crime so to speak. Further, Bill and Frank are ever present through their signaling system of using 70s 80s and 90s music and serves as a haven for continuing the mission of heading out west. Beyond framing, there is the letter that Bill writes to Joel where we learn more about their common traits of protecting those they love. Reinforcing that trait at the precise moment when Joel is still bearing cargo not a human being. This helps convey Joel‘s potential and connect him back to the core tragedy when he lost Sarah. But love, whether between lovers, parent and child or friends is so strongly established in episode three that it provides a bar to compare with. Growth, devotion, loyalty, bargaining and flexibility and the intimacy and most of all connection. I see this as a harbinger of what awaits Joel and Ellie, a seed. Episode seven functions differently. From the beginning of the show, we wanted to know about Riley. We knew she was a significant loss of some kind for Ellie. Again this fulfills a narrative function we know why Ellie could call upon the experience of following love “even to the edge of doom“ and save Joel‘s life and never give up. Narratively of course it flows through to Eli’s darkest moment with David and the harrowing experience of surviving that without Joel‘s assistance. She achieved this by drawing David’s hunters away from the prostrate Joel buying him extra time to heal. Themagically the Riley, Ellie relationship both explains Eli‘s aversion to giving up and fear of loss, but connects with the overarching theme of dedication and loyalty as seen in episode three episode seven and tragically in episode nine.

I will say that the flashback to Left Behind makes a lot more sense in light of the fact that Ellie is in a Mall in both temporal contexts in the game but I think it would have been shockingly difficult to make the Colorado mall compelling for viewers without stretching credulity about Ellie’s autonomous killing and lurking skills. It probably would have also been overlong. What I was shocked by having played the new remake as the show was airing is the way in which Left Behind in both mediums is such a dead ringer in terms of tone. There’s this kind of desperate somber dread that’s unique to both the episode and the dlc and I’m not sure how they captured that in a bottle twice. Prequels are usually awful experiences but this one plays heavily on the tension around the knowledge the viewer has of impending doom and the ephemera pity of joy. This reflects in the teenage anxiety about first love, fear of rejection, and exhilaration as you venture into unknown territories of romance. I think perhaps also these feelings are amplified by the unique queer experience of this that so much more fraught with such steep risks. I can’t really say what it’s like for a straight person who lived a straight teenage upbringing, but I imagine enough of it is relatable in any case and perhaps it’s well enough created in this case for even non-queer people to empathize. And then certainly the tragic dramatic irony that neither queerness nor military postings will be what separates these two girls. Finally, on a different note, I don’t think anything qualifies as filler unless the express purpose of it is to pad out time. Even if these episodes had no utility to plot (which they do) or main story (only tenuously) then it’s still not filler because they have they are not being made with that purpose. Bottle episodes are not filler episodes. They set out to achieve their own story and thematic goals and in this case they do rhyme with the rest of the series but they needn’t even do that to still be worthwhile.

For me the greatest disappointment was that they changed Bill and Frank’s story into a gooey romance. In the game it was a realistic and powerful tragic love story, which laid out Bill’s character, turning him from a cliché weirdo NPC into a humanised character that you feel for and understand and remember and care for even after Joel and Ellie leave in his car. In the show it felt like adaption to current political agenda rather than the story, that’s why it feels so disconnected in the first place. And the happy end feels so dragged on, and unnatural, and disney-like, that after it ends, the only feelings you have for Bill is that he was a convenient source of loot for the main characters, who even conveniently snuffed himself before they arrived so as to guarantee that you disregarded his story by the end of episode. Riley’s episode is nothing like that. It’s pivotal, it manages to make you feel for Riley and Ellie and their feelings while slowly unwinding, and in the end really understand the drama that had so much impact on Ellie both personally and because it made her immunity known.

I never understood the premise of the question of whether or not adaptation of a work is necessary: on some level, no adaptation is *necessary.* But they can be valuable to those who haven't for whatever reason engaged with the original works. To say that the game "said all it needed to say" could be aimed at any book, play, memoir, or news story that is adapted for screen. A good adaptation (and I'd say that the HBO show counts) throws a new light on a work, and presents a tale told in an original medium using the strengths of the new medium. Also, there's a sense in which this show isn't necessarily *for* the gamers who played the original. It's for the non-gamers out there who haven't, and the success of the show strongly indicates that all of their work paid off. After all is said and done though, the game is still out there for us to revisit. The adaptation didn't change anything. So did we need it? No. But I still think it was worth doing so that more people can experience this story.

What really got me with the show was the way it was shot, and the way the story was told. It reminded me so very much of a western, and a damned good western at that. The movie the show keeps reminding me of the more I rewatch it is actually Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales, and my god is that ever a movie that twists the world into something that has depth, character, and nuance in the same ways that TLOU does with its TV adaptation.

As someone who’s only watched the show I found myself asking “were the fireflies more competent in the game?” Because I could tell that the show wanted me to think Joel was doing the wrong thing but I just couldn’t not agree with him. I don’t get why marleene was acting as if she was morally pure over Joel when she kidnapped Ellie and forced her into a life ending surgery. Sure she believed she’d save the world but overlooking something as consent and autonomy is pretty bad. I don’t even think their vaccine would’ve worked because they thought that Ellie’s Cordyceps masked her from the infected and when knew they still attacked her. Even if the vax worked how would they mass produce it and distribute it? Marleene said she lost half her men on the way to Salt Lake City, could she really distribute a vax nation wide? Even if this improbable vax was spread it’s not like it would cure anyone who was infect and it certainly wouldn’t prevent people from being mauled by infected. (I do think it’s noteworthy that the average person from the games launch in 2013 wouldn’t have as many questions about vax logistics as someone who’s lived through the Covid pandemic but that doesn’t make them any less legitimate now) Overall the fireflies just seemed naive and void of pragmatism is their planing, I ok with Joel actions to save Ellie but I wasn’t ok with him lying to her, especially because she looks up to him so much.

Granted Marelene & the FireFlies did the exact same thing but shepherding under the knife without consulting her hence why there aren't any "good guys". Of course any parent would sacrifice the world for their child which is why Joel's choice makes sense to the player. People upset with how Joel is portrayed in the show/part 2 Imo just want Joel to be their "hero" & the "good guy". When it was clear from the get he is far more naucanced than that. He admittedly used to be be a Hunter murdering lilely innocent people as others tried to do to him & Ellie. Well Marlene is a bit different in the games but you also need a comic to aid in it so we'll call her game marlene so game marlene not only had time with the mom & ellie but she escorted her to FEDRA and visited ellie over her years of schooling she didn't raise ellie due to firefly business & for all we know she didn't want a kid anyhow. in the game FEDRA school is a better place for elie then the streets or with marlene herself where ellie is leaerning how to shoot, guard, take orders one day she could've been pulled to be a firefly should marlene wish it otherwise the girl had a reasonably safe life ahead of her as a fedra guard. so game elle knew marlene in univrse. but in the game the player meets marlene on the loosing end of a fedra war her group is on the downward decline in her area and in TLOU2 we see abby's group of fireflies (where joel & ellie will later head to) seems well established they're not threadbare like marelene's group is. they have enough safety that teen abby feels secure most of the time & she can enjoy wildlife hikes/scavenger hunts with her father just across the river so it seems like her life & group are reasonably stable & safe most likely due to having actual medical staff as apart of its members (you want to keep them safe medical anyone is rare as hell) so abby's group maybe able to make a cure but can marlene's group get it into hands? That was the gamer debate it really depends on how many other hands marlene has, what means do they use to notify the fedra zones about it, and how much can they make us gamers were 50/50 for pro firefly she needs alot to go right she can cure her own people first then via traders like fallout wonder to fedra zone to fedra zone smuggling it in & only curing pro firefly folks first or maybe even ever they aren't going to put the whole operation in jepordy to get every one but as long as say marlene cures 20% of those alive that's enough of a start they'll have cured kids and it will build up. but the other half of gamers were like it can't happen due to that's not how a cure for this would go we also don't have willing test subjects to toss at zombies and see how that goes and they judged marlene's group saying they're so shit at their basic jobs they can't do anything but this was before the 2nd game came out it seems if they have more stable bases like abby's the better they can move a cure around.

I totally agree with you about the end. It's something I've been thinking about since episode 9 came out. After I finished the first game, I also never thought it needed a sequel. Part 1 had a beginning and an end, and that ending had stuck with me for so many years. But when watching the show, knowing there was going to be a season 2, it felt like just a cliffhanger. I think this really reduced the impact of the final dialogue. I am worried now about how they will portray Joel, going forward. He's not perfect, but I don't want him to be reduced to some selfish villain.

Well the thing is, that final dialog is still important, because its essentially the driving force of ellie's plot in part 2. I don't believe joel will be portrayed as evil, the idea is that love is selfish. He committed horrible acts because he had no other choice, just as the fireflies had done. The actions of the characters in TLoU are all generally very morally grey, and it is up to the viewer to decide how these actions and motivations reflect upon themselves. I think the cliffhanger part is just a product of the fact we know that there will be a part 2 now :/

I really enjoyed your analysis on the show. It made me think of it in a lot of different ways. Overall, I loved the show. I think it was a fantastic adaptation that respected the source material and expanded on it in a way that made it stronger. However, I do share your concerns with the IP being drawn out and rehashed over and over. I think the closest comparison is marvel. In an attempt to reach a bigger and bigger audience every release they ignored the core of why people came and enjoyed it in the first place, thus alienating its original fan base and exhausting new fans with repackaged old material. I worry that Naughty Dog will fall into similar pitfalls and end up be tied down by TLOU. I know they’ve been talking about a new IP over the last couple of years and I would love to see that from them. I know people really want TLOU3 but I think what I really want is new stories and characters that I can fall in love with again. Not fan service. Like Neil has said, I don’t think we should have part 3 until there’s a story that gives it a purpose to exist.

I totally agree with your points, but to me, one thing that the show achieved and that I will always be grateful for is allowing people who will never play the game to experience the story. For example, my mom and my grandma would never pick up a controller, and even if they did, they would never play an action game. Even if I begged them to, they would never watch a stream of the game, no matter how much the story's worth it. They just wouldn't do it. But they watched the show, and I saw them go through most if not all the emotions I went through playing the game. And after they were done, I enhanced their experience by telling them about how the show differs from the game, and we sat down and watched most of the game's cutscenes together. This wouldn't have been possible without the show, because the cutscenes wouldn't have context. So the show allowed me to share the incredible feelings, both good and bad, that I got from playing the game with people I love, whereas before the show I was unable to share that with them. I think that alone justifies its existence!

In the game it's about "Joe & Ellie" and the side characters you interact with affect them directly. In the show, you see those side characters in their own stories, their own lives outside of just Joe & Ellie. It works in a show more than it would in a game, and the game's action works better in a game more than a show. Both sides are wonderfully crafted.

And that's exactly what it was an adaptation of a story from a video game made for TV for people who have not experienced that story. The only people that I seem to see that are complaining are people who have played the game. Which is fine. You can have your complaints and critiques, but you cannot argue the fact that it's one of HBO's most successful television series of their history and for the most part, people loved it.

Joel is "monstrous" only to callous utilitarians who are willing to jump through hoops to justify the actions of the Fireflies. The Fireflies are a desperate terrorist group who are starving for a "miracle" that will win them back the prestige that has been melting away by the time we revisit Joel and Ellie in the TLOU timeline. In the game, the Fireflies point a gun at Joel as he desperately tries to revive an unconscious Ellie after drowning. They beat him over the head and force an unconscious girl directly to the operating table. Never asking Ellie for consent, never even considering that she deserves to have even a modicum of say in her own fate. To top it off, they don't want to give her surrogate father a chance to say goodbye or discuss this momentous decision with her. Instead, they strip him of his belongings and basically give him a death sentence as they plan to send him out into the streets of a city crawling with infected with nothing but the clothes on his back. Like Ellie, Joel is just a disposable pawn in the Fireflies quest for power on the North American continent. Fuck the Firefly soldier who licked his lips at the prospect of putting a bullet into a grieving and panicked father. Fuck Jerry the unethical quack with delusions of grandeur. Fuck Marlene and her lies. Their cruelty and lack of humanity was thrown right back in their faces, and rightfully so. Then, we are asked to sympathize with an even more grotesque mass-murdering psychopath in the form of Abby in the second game. I can't wait to see the television audience widely despise and reject that horribly written brute.

Exactly right, the show is a mixed bag, has a lot of ups and downs. What surprises me, is you feel the show is for people who loved the game, when my feeling is the story was perfectly told already, the game is a cinematographic experience by itself, so the people who already played it dont need a show that just kinda imitates it, and is more targeted for a new audience. So, something is not right when both you and me feel the show was for the other. I still would fully recommend the game as the best way to experience this story.

I absolutely agree with Diego Lopez. Before the show came out, I had a general understanding of The Last Of Us Story. After watching the entire show, I got an opportunity to play it. I knew there were changes from the show, but I had no idea just how different the changes were until I played it. I think people smear Game Joel as a Numb-Hearted unit of a man, but he's a man who loses the most precious person in his life all due to humans doing inhumane acts. To desperately try to save your only child from a life-ending wound, having no power to save your kid. There's no way you aren't wounded from that. The line of Joel saying "You have no idea what loss is." And Ellie argue she does. I agree with Joel more. He's literally experienced loss for longer than Ellie has even existed. He's lost his only child. He views himself as a failure of a father for what happened to Sarah. Up until Episode 3, the changes the show did weren't big enough to change the narrative of the game. Everyone loves the love story of Bill & Frank. Personally, I felt they rushed the romance. In the game, Joel doesn't know Frank at all, implying their relationship was recent. In the show, their story is more This Is Us, than The Last Of Us. In the game, you actually meet Bill, and he's a real piece of work. Paranoid, selfish, antisocial. He's what Joel would be if he completely went Soulless Survivor mode. Also, Bill's Town is more of a death trap filled with traps than a self-sustaining haven the show portrays. It's actually the first time you have to fight a Bloater in game(Episode 5's huge infected with bullet sponge armor & the strength to rip a man apart). Game Bill & Frank clearly have a dysfunctional, possibly toxic relationship, with Frank leaving a suicide note for Frank, telling him how he hated his guts & basically deconstructs his character flaws. If I were to make changes, I'd have the haven eroded over the years, losing access to areas of the town to infected. I find it absolutely unrealistic that 2 men can maintain such a secure town defense with only one incident of raiders & no threat of the Infected(Zombies). I'd have them lose territory overtime, driving Bill angry & possibly lashing out at Frank. I'd even maybe have Bill's Traps decimate a squad of FEDRA, leaving behind parts to repair a truck, namely the battery. One problem. The area is swarming with infected & Bill's supplies are dwindling. Bill would rather fortify his castle than make a suicide run for it. Frank would rather take the risk so they can have a way out if shit hits the fan. After arguing, Frank would take it upon himself to get the battery, but get bit in the process. I'd either adapt it straight out of the game, or have Frank return to Bill with the battery, scared & apologetic to Bill, to which Bill would apologize back even harder. I'd have Frank ask for Bill to take his life, but he refuses. Confessing that he loves him too much to ever physically harm him. But Bill also doesn't want to be forced to kill an Infected Frank & risk getting bit himself, so he comes up with a more peaceful way to end his life, either poison or overdosing. Before the poison takes its toll, Bill & Frank play the piano together until Frank collapses dead. I'd have Bill be destroyed, mourning his love & life. Some time passes, with Bill burying Frank in the hole they met, planting a strawberry garden on top as a memorial. Bill would go full trapper mode. Hellbent on killing any infected in the area, and in the middle of it, he runs into Joel & Ellie. My Show Bill would be a more direct parallel to Game Bill. Wanting to get Joel & Ellie out of his hair & town. Joel would tell him he needs a truck, to which Bill reluctantly offers the truck he restored, but only if they help him clear the infected from town, as he is adamant to stay & maintain his home & Frank's Grave. Joel reluctantly accepts, giving Ellie Molotov Cocktails to help purge the infected from a safe distance. After the town is cleared, he thanks their help further by showing them how to make a basic, but potent nail bomb, another weapon you get from the game, and even says a makeshift smoke bomb could be made if they replace the shrapnel with sugar. Before they leave, Bill will talk to Joel, and say he's sorry for his loss of Tess, though Joel never told him, Bill is observant enough to know that Joel is going through a similar loss. End with Joel & Ellie driving off in the distance, and Bill either at Frank's Grave, or playing their song on his piano, reminiscing his memories of Frank. I have other changes to the show I'd make, but I'd imagine anyone reading this comment would need a break from all the reading. If anything, I'll post another comment with more show tweaks.

There was a woman who posted on Reddit asking how to play the last of us. She’s a middle aged woman who had never played a video game since Pac-Man in the arcade but she wanted to play it because she loved the show and wanted more. Adapting it is the same as adapting a book. Sure some movies get novelizations but that’s different than adapting a book into movie. Different medium, different experiences, games are more like books, you can get closer to a person in a book. And books are great, but I still like movies based on books. Sometimes I like to watch the movie first before reading the book because adaptions can be disappointing and when the book is better than the movie you just get a movie and better book experience.

This is a very well put together video, I very well agree with the idea of the milking of a franchise. The last of us Part 1 could've been left as is with a remaster and a show being released within the same calendar year and a neatly wrapped bow on the franchise but with the show being produced after a sequel has already been made it only means more milking is going to be done. There is more harm to do than good which is worrying but I'm hoping for the best.

You have really captured my same thoughts about this show. I enjoyed this show only when I realized that I needed to shut off my brain off a couple of concerns and issues that kinda irritated me. The show feels formulaic but the love stories all capture the thematic implications of the game and they expanded it in a way that fits the medium very well and doesn’t feel forced ( Episode 3 and 5 specifically). But after these episodes, I felt the show struggling a lot. For me, the only thing it captured well after these episodes was Joel and Ellie’s relationship and it was really damn good as well as their characterizations but that’s really just it. The last episode felt rushed at some point as well as the previous episodes in many moments. The core problem with the show isn’t only the half-mindless “re-iteration” of the game but how it slows at points where it should be faster and rushes at points where it should be much slower, the pace is very inconsistent and unhinged. As good as how episode 3 was, but an hour and a half should have been spent in other parts of the story that felt rushed, especially the last episode. I think Druckmann creative’s intent is just trying out things in the wide, enthralling television medium that he couldn’t try in the video game’s medium so what you get as a viewer in general is episodic, very formulaic cuts of character storylines, action sequences and some extra bits of pre-apocalypse ambience that I think everyone wanted much more of. The story needed to be much more gripping and impactful in its own way just like the game was on a gameplay, world-building experience, because for me the game is much more affecting because of how it very well overuses it’s medium for these character interactive moments that develop the story in gameplay, the problem is that the series doesn’t overuse its medium but just mindlessly re-iterates. If you’re not gonna implement the themes of the story as in a television medium and instead implement it in the same formulaic game style of events and just make extra bit of additions then it’s gonna be very conflicting, you won’t really know who is it made for. For e.g: there is a lot of dread in the game and it is mostly conveyed through intense gameplay moments that surely couldn’t be implemented in the show but coming from Craig Mazin, the man who literally invented the anxiety-wrenching Chernobyl - it is really hard to understand why he didn’t recreate the same atmosphere of dread about literally a close to real life apocalypse. This was shown abit in episode 2 but then we never saw this world building or dread again. Also, the rules established for the infected in Ep.2 were never revisited in the rest of the show and in episode 7 when one infected finally woke up in the mall after all of the noise.

Even though gaming is way more popular now than it was even just a decade ago, there are still people out there that won’t believe a video game can have as much depth and have such good writing like TLOU1 has, so having a decently accurate adaption of the game like this is a pretty big deal. For me that has played the games after the show I went back and played part 1 again and it was so strange I found myself saying wow the show did it better in certain parts. For example when you find Franks note and you read it the notes so hateful makes Frank out too be asshole and sheds nastiness on Bill and what the show did was take two characters that had negativity attached to them and gave them something nice. When Sarah dies having Pedro yell Tommy’s name for help is a nice touch and I think Pedro showed more emotion there then Troy did. Having the infected kill Tess instead of the QZ officers makes more sense. The Tommy and Joel conversation and Joel feeling scared was a perfect change in the game Joel is mad at Tommy and Ellie all the way until the last second when he decides to go with Ellie. In the show they made him feel scared of failing because of his age and that’s why he asked Tommy too do it. Also moving the Jackson stuff into part 1 is a nice change. Throughout the game I was surprising myself think wow the show improved on the game a lot

And i get that most (thought not all, apparently) of it came from the videogame. But as someone who doesn't play those, and kind has a hate for shooters (my aim sucks a$$), im happy i got to live the story of the games and a bit more trought the show. I played both of the games before watching series and then I watched it with my mother who doesn’t play games at all and her reaction just made me love it more, I saw the same reactions that I had when I first played the game. And then I watched it with my stepdad who also had not played the game, his reaction being the same as my mother, then him and I sat down and I watched as he played the first game, he knew what was coming and it was sad, but he still loved it. Then we started part 2 and damn, I realized that they could never create a season two with the same impact as part 1, part 2 or the first season of the series cause it’s so different and no matter what order you go through the games and series, part 2 focuses more on the violence and revenge and it wouldn’t work without spoiling everything else. Not to say I’m not extremely excited to see them blow my mind for the 100th time. Overall I love everything they have come up with so far

Great video! Very insightful. I played the game back in 2014 and it still is the most powerful story I have ever experienced. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I believe the show actually did it better than the game. It elevated the story and all its characters, especially the secondary ones. Pedro's Joel, to me, is perfect. Bella is great as Ellie and gave a really good performance. Part 2 is going to be a challenge to adapt, I think, and it makes me a bit worried. But it's a very powerful story, powerful themes, some devastating moments, I hope they manage to do as good a job as they did with part 1. Unfortunately, my family did not enjoy the show. They keep saying it's overrated, cliche, don't understand the fuss, that nothing ever happens, and that TWD is better. haha I feel kinda sad not being able to share my love for this story with the people I would like to share it the most, so it's great to watch videos like this. Makes me see that I'm not crazy somehow :)

On the other hand I don’t put in the effort to play any of these games ha! But I can see what Mr. Druckmann was getting at. The flashbacks of Ellie and Joel are spot on entertainment. The story of the interaction between Abby and Ellie’s revenge is very compelling. They have both lost so much over it. But really where else could either of them go? My pie in the sky resolution? Ellie learns to play guitar even better with her left hand. A cure is found for the cordyceps infection. Ellie and Abby are old ladies with children of their own. I really don’t think they could ever look each other in the eye, but you never know. Maybe one or both need to die in order to implement a cure. Just don’t do the wizard of OZ and have Sarah wake up from a bad dream. Ha ha. The writer can do whatever he wants.

There are some things that didn’t hit as hard as they did in the game, like the progression of Joel and Ellie’s relationship. But, I am super nitpicky and I had to work a bit to separate the game from the show, and once I did I enjoyed the show so much.

  • @VendettaSoundtracks

My feelings about the show are kind of strange. I thought it was great, I audibly told myself at various points "wow, this is great", and as a big fan of the first game (less so the second), each drop of an iconic line or faithful recreation of it's most memorable scenes often had me going "holy shit, this is great!". ...And yet, as each episode came out, I found myself progressively enjoying it less and less, without (at the time) really being able to pinpoint why. So I began to really sit and think about things. And ultimately, I settled on a rather simple explanation: "I just don't really find myself caring about this version of Ellie and Joel." And not caring about them is a MAJOR issue, given the climax that their entire relationship builds up to. Do I think the show did a bad job at bonding them together? Objectively, no. But when I compare how I felt about their relationship in the game to how I felt about it in the show... well, the show just absolutely falls short in comparison. Those "in between" moments within the game combined with being in direct control of Joel's actions makes you feel more personally invested in protecting Ellie, and really contributed a lot to the believability of their growing bond. I have other issues - such as the pacing beyond the absolutely phenomenal Episode 3 being completely out-of-whack - but ultimately, their show-relationship falling short of their game-relationship is what hurt it the most for me.

This isn't bad show, but I had some issues with it: 1. Too many action/zombie scenes are skipped or over-shortened. No, TLOU isn't all about zombies, but there still were far too few, especially since the goal is supposed to me curing humanity of said zombies. 2. Pedro pascal's 'softer' portrayal of Joel didn't work for me. I think they get along too fast in the show and so it seems like less of a big deal when he finally bonds with Ellie when compared to the game.

  • @rwwilson21

    @rwwilson21

Yes, the show isn't about "zombies". it just uses zombies as a backdrop for that story. You could have put Joel and Ellie's story into the old west genre and made Indians the backdrop and the story still would have worked. Zombies are just NPC obstacles you have to face to get Ellie to the Fireflies. THAT'S IT. so taking that part out and focusing on just Joel and Ellie's story(aka drama. which is what tv focuses on) that's what made it tv adaptation. If you have a problem with that, you're gonna have a problem every fucking tv show every made.

@@superchamploo1155 No it's not! It has nothing to do with curing the outbreak. Neil Druckmann (THE CREATOR OF THE GAME) has even said this. It's about relationships and finding love again when you think love is gone, and what you will do to protect it. aka the forming of the father-daughter relationship of Joel and Ellie and what Joel did at the hospital. Bill's letter summed up the show's theme perfectly: "I used to hate the world and was happy when everyone died, but I was wrong. because there was one person worth saving and that's what I did I saved him and protect him." In other words when you find someone you love, you save and protect them at all cost. And that's what Joel did. He saw/sees Ellie as a daughter, and he saved and protected her. Every true loving parent would have done EXACTLY what Joel did.

Great video and I agree with almost all of your points. One I agree with, but also may disagree with depending on some info we don’t have was “No more Last of Us”. I want a “Part 3” or even more “parts”, if after the first game was made and while writing Part 2 they had already written a part 3 or had an outline of what they wanted to do with this story in the future “parts”. I don’t want anymore Last of Us, if Neil wrote Part 2 to be the finale of the series. Full stop. If that’s how he wanted to finish it, it’s done. I don’t think he did though because he and naughty dog chose to go back and add “part 1” to the first game. Could there only be 2 parts? Sure. But in my head, if I was to make a story and put part 1/part 2 in the title, I wouldn’t have ended on part 2. So in this instance I would have just left TLOU as TLOU and titled the second game TLOU 2 not part 2. We will probably get the answer to if Druckmann had an outline for a trilogy or however more parts there are in the future. He’s usually very open when interviewed. With all that said, We do know we will be getting a TLOU part 3 He said so much in his post season finale interview with Kinda Funny. The good thing at this point is Mazin said he only wants to cover part 1 and part 2 on HBO. He does not want to do anymore. So no GoT debacle here. The next naughty dog game is a brand new IP Druckmann is working on. So I wouldn’t expect part 3 for about 4-6 years.

27:29 for those of us who have never played a video game, the statement “ what the show stood for as a video game?” Has little or no meaning. But I think it’s important for people like me to consider it. Why? At the very least to understand, differences of meaning, based upon the mode of artistic expression, a.k.a. role player game with dramatic story around it. I want to know how you adapt material from the game the same way I’m interested in how you adapt a book to a TV show or movie . On the level of content, for example we can consider what the wheel of time/the eye of the world as a book stood for with respect to its adaptation. For book readers the world building and magic system were violated; the nature of art form “TV show” did not force the show runners to mutate the core of the book. In contrast “the last of us” show did not violate the essence of the game. You very well understand and express this later in this video how that’s necessary -------- season one spoilers----- And so also, for example, humanizing violence must occur because the TV show audience is not playing a role playing game, and there are many opportunities to deviate from the games rules as RPG medium. First, as a non-gamer, you could discount this idea, but to have that music during that killing spree appearing like a mass shooting, which damn well looks like what I see in a video game where the protagonist is just popping off bad guys. That’s genius. They saved that inhuman violence to the very end for maximum impact. This may be glib perhaps that’s what the TV show owed to the gaining audience, and perhaps even what the game stood for for its users. My take on the rampage is that Joel‘s actions to save Ellie were instinctual, and not premeditated No one should imagine Joel stopping and explaining to himself at that point just before he killed those two guys on the stairwell that he was calculating whether or not Ellie could save the world. He already had a visceral distrust of the fireflies and their abduction and forced surgery just overpowered is self-control. Indeed, his actions were not monstrous, regardless of a hypothetical ability Ellie may have had to save the world - as a corpse! As a gamer virgin whatever last of us version two people apparently know hasn’t unfolded yet. His lie to Ellie, on the other hand, while not monstrous is a relationship enormity that will fill out season two

😮 31:14 as a gamer you get to say that it’s a cynical, money grab and that in the end it’s OK because it will bring more people to video games. Fine as a non-video game player, however, the other possibility is they simply want to bring an amazing story to that audience. Something that may never have been created in the TV show media. And if I can say in short, what Craig Mazin brings to it, is that transformation from game to show, and that partnership which validates it this is an amazing achievement for people like me. And I will never play video games I’ve got other things to do.
