Because the "Children's Card Game" is considered such a big deal, Players don't want anyone to know their Strategies or Deck's completely for fear of being hard countered. The fact that Dimitri managed to work out the Strategies for SEVERAL Prominent Duelist's from just the Media coverage & interviews shows just how intelligent and Dangerous he could truly be if he managed to make his own Deck... I really appreciate the work that he puts into these videos, as analyzing Yugioh Duels in the later series and trying to examine every possible play each player could make is a lot of effort, especially when you have to piece together the opening hands. It's really helped me put more thought into my own scripted Duels for the Yugioh stories I write, so I just wanna say thanks for making this series, as not only is it fun to do an in depth analysis of the series I've loved for decades now, it's helped me become not only a better player at the game, but a better writer who wants to deliver the best possible story I can.

    I am surprised that the Dark Magician misplay wasn't mentioned. When Jaden summoned Bladeedge, Dimitri could have had Dark Magician destroy Burstinatrix, then summoned Dark Magician of Chaos with the spell card dedication to light darkness to destroy Bladeedge. Jaden would have been in a worse position, and probably even lost. This definitely shows that Dimitri will never use Yugi's deck as good as Yugi can.

    In all fairness, Dimitri's ability to learn off of and copy another player just based on their recorded Duels and strategies is *really impressive* Keep in mind, he had *no time* to practice with Yugi's deck and yet he was able to use it almost as if he was the King of Games himself. If Dimitri had just gone with Bastion's route he might have been really succesfull tbh. Basically, instead of trying to have one deck that he copied, he should instead have multiple decks for different types of opponents. A strategy where his knack for studying others would have been at its strongest.

    Additional misplay you didn't cover: Jaden should have set emergency provisions for a few reasons 1: If Jaden waits for the activation conditions of Hero spirit, as tributing it would have given him 1000 extra LP. 2: keeping the unknown card he tributed with his effect could be useful on a later turn potentially, so he shouldn't have activated Emergency provisions until he absolutely had to. 3: This would have had the side effect of Dimitri being unable to use spider's web to regain enough Life Points to survive Flame Wingman's effect.

    While yes Jaden setting polymerization was shenanigans for card of sanctity, I don't think it's as outlandish as it looks. Yugi's deck is LEGENDARY and with how big of a fan Jaden seems to be in the short moments we get to see him talk about the King of Games, I believe Jaden and quite a few others would know a lot of the cards Yugi plays, including Cards of Sanctity, which means foresight is something Jaden absolutely has here. Jaden could have easily predicted that Dimitri would draw that card at some point because the duel has been going for a while.

    TLDR It's not just that he set it, but that he sets Poly now, but rather that he didn't set Poly earlier when it made more sense to do so. For sure, it's just a little unusual for a player to make a play based on a card that their opponent COULD have as opposed to a card that they, themselves, actually have and are using right now. So it's not so much that he set Polymerization, as much as it is that it just makes much more sense for him to have set it earlier to ensure that his own plan couldn't fail. He willingly gambled on a 25% chance instead of making it a 100% chance, but then sets Polymerization in case of what I will generously call the 1/20 chance of drawing Card of Sanctity or 1/10 if we want to add in Card Destruction like another commenter mentions.

    A couple things I thought about watching this video. One was that I love when Chaos Soldier is treated as a boss monster, it is my favorite monster and what I built my deck around once I got back into Yugioh through video games a few years ago(yes I know it is not actually considered good but I am a casual player and just like using what I like). Second is the ending statement really is right, when you build your deck picking your own cards for all the particular plays and scenarios that could come up it gives you this great feeling of "okay I know if I draw this card, this card, or this card then I know I can get out of this situation" which is a great feeling.

Idk, I'd just love to see you tackle a challenge like this, cause it would be dope af. Dimitri was right that he needed to summon Dark Magician of Chaos to get over bladedge. And he knew to activate it during the battle phase to get in another attack. It seems Dimitri called off his Dark Magician's attack thinking he wasn't allowed to attack Burstinatrix when the replay occurred. He thought he was forced to attack Bladedge or not attack at all. Maybe because he though replay rules dictate you must attack the newly summoned monster or that A Hero Emerges has some attack management effect. Jaden got lucky that Dimitri misplayed heavily on here and was silent on it. We've seen instances where the anime is different than the OCG/TCG before. Like when Drillroid actually attacks a defense wall and damage calculation occurs. A Hero Emerges simply isn't one of those cases. At least not in this duel.

    If I recall Dimitri is the mirror match opponent in the games he appears in. Literally copies your hand. Only 2 fusions he knows he can make. One thing established in season 2 is that Jaden actually doesn’t know that his HEROes have a lot of different potential results when fused. Granted we don’t see many in the anime and manga and most of these fusions are legacy support and one could argue that they might not exist in-universe (despite them clearly having cards that we don’t have so that line is a bit blurry in my opinion.)

    WIthout hindsight, I think Dimitri made the best turn 1 play. Yeah, he could've dealt a quick 2100 damage, but it'd mean burning through his hand: playing it careful because Jaden still had a full hand was the right move: over-extending was just too dangerous at that point. Likewise, Swords of Revealing Light is best saved for when you know you need the attack block (such as the next turn where Dimitri was in top-decking move, so it was too risky to risk Jaden battling Gazelle without summoning anything). Of course, had Dimitri known he'd want Dark Magician in the GY and an extra body on the field due to Dark Renewal, that'd change everything, but he had no way of knowing what he'd top-deck.

Dimitri, if he had set Reincarnation, could have activated it to get Pot of Greed, get BLS immediately, then switch all his Kuribo tokens to attack, activate Reincarnation to get back DM, tribute watapon and Dark Magician of Chaos for DM, special BLS, attack Burstinatrix with BLS, attack again, attack Bubbleman with DM (Jaden 1300 -> 600) and finish it with the Kuribo tokens. The Virgin Neos: -Vanilla monster that requires two tributes -Not even in the deck from the beginning of the show -Relies on spells to allow it to win -Fusions it can summon are all really shitty and pussy out to the extra deck at the end of the turn -Semi part of one of the worst and most laughed at archetypes in the game -Cannot control fire The Chad Flame Wingman: -The original ace monster, in the deck from the beginning -Single-handedly won the first duel of the series -Is a Fusion monster -Has a badass and powerful effect that lets it capitalise on the strength of opponent’s monsters to deal massive damage -Has a really sick design -A HERO monster, one of the biggest and most support archetypes out there -Can control fire I think we all know who wins here, lads

    This is the first time ever that I have seen another person analyze what cards each player in a duel draws throughout a duel - I have done that with a lot of duels in both Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX - it just shocks me a little bit to see that I'm not the only one that has done that kind of analysis to things. 😅🙏

    Basically, Dimitri did technically win when he attacked Bubbleman with Dark Magician Girl and Avian with Black Luster Soldier but in the anime, Jaden’s Skyscraper Field Spell gives his Elemental Heroes 1,000 extra attack points during his opponents battle phase - in real life it only works on your own battle phase leaving your Elemental Hero wide open when your opponent summons and attacks with a stronger monster in their turn.

Yes Atem had Dark Magician & Dark Magician Girl on the field to protect his life points with no other monsters left(unless Atem had a unknown card in his deck to return all his banished monsters to his deck) so to answer your question, i think the evil Marik would've won since he has other cards to drain Atem's life points and win the duel. Interesting gameplay mechanic regarding Emergency Provisions: If Jaden/Judai had set the Spell/Trap cards first and then used Polymerization/The Warrior Returning Alive, he could've chained Emergency Provisions to gain an extra 1000 life while still getting the card effect off since it doesn't negate it.

    Honestly I think Dimitri's weakness isn't even that he "net decks." It's that he thinks if he can find the one magical perfect deck he'll become the best duelist. He has good technical skills, and is able to adapt his playstyle to a new deck extremely well. If he just stuck with those decks for a while and got his reps in, he'd be a force to be reckoned with, kind of like Mimasaka from Food Wars with his "Perfect Trace"

    I think Dimitri should have more credit. The whole "make your own deck and believe in your cards" is cute. But it's said in front of large amount of background characters that contribute absolutely nothing to the series. Knowing and believing in their decks didn't take them anywhere either. Demitri's ability to learn and copy that well based on limited information is amazing. He should be encouraged to further his talents. Not discard them for a playstyle that won't take him anywhere either.

  • @noelleholiday61

    @noelleholiday61

    Did it really not take them anywhere? Or did they lose because they're hobbyists and/or poor duelists, or did we just not learn where they went because they aren't the main characters, and we would have if they were? Also, the "heart of the cards" is about using cards that are important and mean something to you, even if they aren't top tier powerful cards. When you use your own deck that you made, you learn how the cards synergize, you learn how to make great combos even from sub-optimal cards. And if that's not enough, so what? GX's literal final lesson is to just have fun dueling, and to take it in grace whether you win or lose. Yes, Dimitri's skills for analysis are AMAZING, but he should use that to craft his own deck which plays to HIS strengths, not someone else's. THATS why he loses. He's not really trying to make his own strategy on the fly, he's just recycling the strategies of another duelist.
