Was BFA Really as Bad as People Remember??

Was Battle For Azeroth really as bad as people remember? This is one of the few expansions that was universally hated for tons of reasons, however I think most of these reasons might be a little bit overblown

Well I think overall when you play WoW casually it's always an enjoyable experience. I played in Mop, WoD, Legion, BfA, Classic and Wotlk Classic, all very casually and honestly had my fair share of fun and enjoyable experiences, usually with a guild of like minded people. And I can't talk about the serious raider or hardcore player experience, but I had a ton of fun in BfA while leveling and doing casual Uldir runs and some mythic dungeons with my guild back then

That’s how I play WoW and I still have fun with it. I’ve been playing it since Cataclysm and the only expansion I was mostly inactive on was Shadowlands (and a bit of WOD). I’m not really into hardcore gaming and instead like to make my own fun. Heck there are some days where my friend and I just goof around by trying to catch each other or even role play.

Not enough is made about how much work was put into the BFA zones and dungeons. Some of the most immersive and beautiful areas I've experienced in all the years playing. The difference in quality when Shadowlands came out was a shock to the system for me. It was clear in the first 3 or 4 zones, like the Maw and Oribos, that the same care and vision weren't really put into this new expansion.

  • @forrest3867

    @forrest3867

Absolutely. People really don’t talk about just how much work was poured into BFA. That expansion was packed to the absolute brim with content, I’d argue that it was the most meticulously crafted release expansion to date. Island Expeditions, system reworks and Warfronts ate up SO much development time, yet this expansion still had the most beautiful zones and quest design to date. SO many cinematics. So much voiced dialogue. It must have been so disheartening for the developers to see their work gone to waste because of really poor decision making in regards to systems and end-game progression.

I'm not sure if I agree that Shadowlands zones are bad. I think the bigger issue is how disconnected they feel from each other - look at how different Revendreth is from Ardenweald, for example. If Shadowlands existed in one coherent continent with zones that seamlessly merge into each other, it would have felt better. I feel like making everything like Bastion with variations on that would have captured the afterlife feeling more than what they did. Also, Zereth Mortis is pretty cool.

Jainas story was so bad if you look past the really simplistic emotional manipulation. Her mom literally gave her a death sentence in front of everyone, then all of a sudden turned back into a loving mom when she saw Jaina was sad? Then the people of Kul Tiras are just supposed to forgive her for betraying her father, their beloved admiral after holding on to that grudge for so long? Did she somehow convince them of the truth that at the time she did it because he was a virulent racist and that's bad, because I saw the Alliance talking a lot of Horde racism during BFA and they seemed fine with it. And the bombing of Theramore still happened on her watch.

I think you didn't cover one aspect of the expansion: lore/plot/story BfA started really strong and bold with BfA. Capital cities destroyed? People were intrigued, and it spurred the faction conflict even among the playerbase. It impacted the leveling, with completely different experiences for Alliance and Horda, and that was awesome. Even warmode and faction invasions synergized to create one of the best PvP experiences I ever had in WoW. Sylvanas' villainy and how the factions were acting stupid were a big concern, but at least at first everyone was expecting an explanation and a satisfying conclusion to all that conflict. And, for 8.0 and 8.1, I feel BfA totally delivered. But then... Well, once we reached 8.1.5, the story was quickly devolving into abandoning the faction war, the main premise, and replacing it with N'Zoth, for which the expansion was not advertized as. To make matter worse, even fans of Old Gods were thinking that the N'Zoth plot would just lead to the next expansion. There was some faction war plot in 8.2. But then it was sudeenly and VERY underwhelmingly resolved in a cinematic in 8.2.5. There were a ton a plot threads just dropped suddenly. From a story point of view, 8.3 was an aberration. It had nothing to do with the story that BfA was sold as. All that investment the players had for the faction was just thrown away in favor of vanquishing N'Zoth, an enemy that could easily have carried his own expansion. As someone who likes Warcraft for lore and story, I remember how betrayed I felt as BfA progressed. From one of the most intriguing and hyped stories we ever had in an expansion, it devolved into a mess of unresolved stuff, disappointing ends and swapped cast of allies and enemies. And it then lead us to Shadowlands, which was a lore abomination of its own...

I dont think you mentioned it, but the pathfinder grinds were very tedious for BFA too, requiring you to do WQ on 2 continents that were already difficult to traverse. The zones themselves were fantastic, but flight paths were so scattered from WQ's (thankfully we had whistle). I think the zones were huge enough to introduce pathfinder 2 a lot sooner, but I think I got tired of having to spent a few extra minutes navigating around a mountain instead of just flying over it so I could do a wq.

  • @kelushan

For me, its almost always about story. The issue I had with BfA was that the story was just not good. It had a lot of potential and it did have good bits here and there but the main war story with Sylvanas was just too much of a 180 of her character IMO. I'm not saying she didn't have the tendency to do evil things, she did, but they made her goals for the war way too vague and gave no reason for why she went so far off the deep end this time. That said, they at least kept it vague enough that there was still potential at the end that they could have fixed it with revelations in the next expac and in the trailer for SL, it felt like they had a good reason in the bag; "This world is a prison... And I will set us all free." But that just ended up just making it all worse by completely wrecking almost all the old established lore and adding needless complexity. I had fun in BfA, despite the meh story and frustrating systems because I had hope there would be decent answers in the next expac, since those answers were even worse, it just paints BfA as the expac that set up the story that SL fumbled, that's why I hate it.

When I was around for legion and BFA, the best things that came from their gear was the power it gave me as a player to have fun experimenting with how I play a class, the moment my warlock got access to stackable absorb effects in legion or accessing the inevitable demise passive from BFA. I realize how much fun it was for me to be one of the tankiest warlocks out there, I had a lot of genuine issues of juggling dealing damage and trying to survive mechanics, sometimes I had trouble getting out of mechanics in time and die in a few seconds as a result, but as a tank lock I found that I those mechanics became a lot more forgiving for me, especially when I could heal it all back up by myself, which also meant one less person healers would have to worry about healing so they could help the rest of the group that needed the health more. As I experimented more, I even found that I was able to tank legitimate tank mechanics in some cases in legion, solo tanked the first caster boss in the crucible of storms far away from the rest of the raid. I even managed to survive and defeat the final boss of a particularly difficult mythic plus dungeon in shadowlands with only me and an equally tanky druid left alive for the majority of said fight. My damage may not have been as good as all the other warlocks people compared me too, but I was still happy being able to stay in a fight to deal damage in the first place. Even in death I was content that my damage was still helping the group especially when a wave of bad luck would come my way. I still try to have fun coming up with fun builds despite the toxic people that obsesses over meta. But as a result I feel just punished in my choice of builds, a feeling that only became truly apparent in shadowlands.

for me, as a Primary Alliance player, (but a proud bifactional when it comes down to it), one of the best angles from the BfD'A raid was them using the Gallywix/Mekkatorque fight as the introduction mechanic for the Mechagnomes - the Vulpera, while cute, were just another race you bumped into while wandering around.

One point I seem to recall that you did not mention: There where fewer 5 man dungeons compared to other expansions (at least at the start). Generally, the fact that people were done with grinding for AP after Legion pretty much set the tone for BFA.

  • @CarlFlapjack

BFA was my first xpac. I started playing in late legion and loved the raiding and dungeon systems. The class flavor and uniqueness was great, however BFA was anti-class. I have many fond memories of playing BFA and learning how to do m+ and heroic raiding, but I also have frustrating ones as well. I remember playing a Boomkin as my off-spec (Resto was my main) and having to avoid mastery on my gear because so much of our damage was random azerite effects or corruption that mastery just didn't work with. They scaled extremely well with crit and haste but not our spec specific stat. For class flavor we had six total azerite powers (two per piece) to play with but we also had that many generic azerite traits and one of our class ones was competing with the raid specific ones as well. There were a couple of essences that had spec specific abilities as well but only a couple. Corruptions only made this problem worse as none of them added to class fantasy. Corruptions being generic wasn't a problem by itself as they very much were void themed, but in an xpac that avoided class identity it was annoying. As much as I did like seeing a big purple laser come out of my druid and one-shot everything in front of me, I missed having to actually play my class to do damage. In legion, each class had an order hall with its own questline and lore. The way you played your spec was determined by your artifact weapons (with their unique spec abilites and traits), legendaries (some were generic and some were class or spec specific) and tier sets. This made for a rich class identity. No matter which class you played in BFA you had basically the same experience as everyone else. BFA did have faction flavor however. Which faction you were decided which leveling zones you had access to. All of the leveling zones were great in both art and story. Then there was the war campaigns. The way the two campaigns played off of each other was cool, however the writing was very weak. The horde war campaign was terrible. Characters like Rexxar and Lillian were doing seemingly the opposite of what you would expect and it ruined the story for me. The armor sets were great but the faction war wasn't natural. It felt forced at every turn. Overall I think faction Identity is fine but wasn't done well in BFA. It didn't replace the class fantasy that we had in Legion which left a hole. Shadowlands restored some of that with the covenant powers, legendaries and tier sets, but I would like to see a return to class specific content. In Dragonflight so far, we have new class and spec talent trees and tier sets. For the first patch after a major overhaul of talents I think this is fine but I would like to see more in the future. I also would very much like to see class specific customizations for our dragonriding mounts. Some class specific quests would be nice too.

Sylvanas was another issue of BfA. I personally took no issue with her burning Teldrassil, nor was I concerned about how dismissive other other Horde factions she was, because both of these were existing traits of hers from WC3 and the ICC dungeons from Wrath. However, when we saw the Old Soldier cinematic and saw her smiling as Teldrassil burnt, alarm bells started ringing. You see, the reason why I didn't have an issue was because the Warbringer for Sylvanas presented her action as a kneejerk over reaction without any forward thinking because she felt challenged how she couldn't win a fight against life and that she "could not kill hope". This was the same sort of reaction when she dismissed the Dreadlords' help in The Frozen Throne, got her Banshees to help Arthas get away from Lordaeron City because it was more important that _she_ killed Arthas than Arthas being killed by anyone. Old Soldier showed that this wasn't true. Her smiling as she watched Teldrassil burned went from being a reminder of her past behaviour to "oh, this was always the plan and she doesn't trust anyone around her with her plans". Obviously we later found out that it was part of the "master plan" she and the jailer were working on, which made it all the worse, but considering how prior to Old Soldier I was fine and all it took was a smile to shatter things for me, it must've been so much worse for people who didn't recognise her actions as being part of her make up. Obviously, it was worse for Horde players, because regardless of Blizzard's assurances this *was* Garrosh 2.0, and having the Horde stand by her in spite of the events of Mists of Pandaria just made everyone else look stupid, vilified the entire faction, and just felt like lessons were not learnt. Even with the Horde rebelling against the Horde storyline, which didn't truly get traction until 8.1, and because it was all hush hush whisper whisper approach, it further belittled the Horde's integrity. It took too long, was too minor and over relied on the help of the Alliance in order to resolve the Horde's internal issues, exactly like it did with the Siege of Orgrimmar, only the Horde were far more proactive that time.

I'm convinced 9.1 was supposed to be more Maw/more in-depth Beastwarrens and Upper Area with a small raid including Helya and Vyraz, 9.2 was supposed to be what 9.1 actually was, and 9.3 was supposed to be what 9.2 was. The Maw had so many underground and deep exploration areas that were just completely ignored for that to be coincidence. The 9.1 campaign where we just killed Helya and Vyraz back to back in a quest felt insanely rushed and totally out of place. The shift probably happened b/c this would have of course been way too much Maw for patch content and players were already not enjoying the Maw.

the funniest part about corruption was trying to do anything with a very high level of corruption, the side effects were a great trade off especially if you wanted to make WQs fun. stacking too much for your cape would cause increasingly worse effects to proc on your character and some of the WQs could add corruption to your character as a debuff so you could go from mildly radioactive to chernobyl instandly

BFA was fine, I had a lot of good memories from it. I had a great time with Drustvar as an Alliance player, and completed every quest in the zone to avoid going to the others for as long as possible. The war campaign to this day remains one of my all time favorite storylines to play through in the game’s history. The first two raids were pretty fun, and most of the dungeons hit. Everything about the actual war was pretty cool, except the conclusion. I was a massive fan of Island Expeditions and the rewards that came from them, and as bad as it was, it was nice that we actually got a PvP map for the first time since Pandaria. I’d say the expansion was solid, and the people who complain about this to hellish extremes must have REALLY experienced the game differently from how I did.

Island Expeditions and Warfronts are still two of the most perplexing game features Blizzard ever added to the game. It feels like the design of these two features should've switched places. Warfronts not being designed with any form of PvP in mind was bewildering, as was the "lets take turns" design of it. Islands, on the other hand, deserved to be given the "gather resources then have access for a few days" system that was given to warfronts, with an added feature of leaving because of overwhelming invasions or the other faction kicking us off.

I started playing wow right when shadowlands prepatch came out so right when levels were crunched. that few weeks were absolutely incredible. you could level in pretty much every zone, go just about everywhere and find some nice piece of content for your level and getting to 50 was a fun trip. I levelled like 5 characters because I kept wanting to try out other zones and classes. then shadowlands dropped and I hated just about everything past 50. hated the zones which were now mandatory to get to 60, hated the dungeons, questlines and npc's were just annoying. everything felt so slow and clunky. I levelled a paladin as prot because killing any enemy took so long I might as well kill 3-5 at a time. maybe that was on me but I never figured out what was wrong. and when they allowed you to skip the storyline partway through the xpac I almost hardlocked my warlock because it was really tough killing just about anything.

Essences, Corrupted Gear(aside from their RNG acquisition and gigantic random power balances between lucky and unlucky players), Mechagon and Nazjatar, Leveling zones, and progressing through Visions of N'Zoth scenarios(before the affixes that made them utterly frustrating. Especially when it lead to iunstances where you literally couldnt move or do anything and got screwed) were all actually fantastic. Amazing how such wide pendulum of RNG on gearing can just put such a bad taste over an expansion. I wonder how Islands would have been if mobs didnt give you azerite and you actually had to explore. Or if Warfronts had fewer players(like 5?) but their actions were way more impactful and immediate. But hey, I actually liked the Hordes Pyramid(choosing the boon that gave you mini flight paths over the speed boosts through the city was clutch before flying) Happy i made an awesome CDR corruption build on my monk, but sad i never was able to make a haste build. Ah well, i had a lot of fun because i wasnt hardcore and didnt fall victim to the grind that seemed absolutely dreadful

I was impressed by the game and the expansion and the vastness of content, doing 5mask runs even though I never really did high level M+ (few 10s at most I think) or raiding. I was honestly shocked to find out that apparently everyone agreed it was bad and I certainly think the bad start was very off-putting for many. For me, it was fun, working my way through the patches of content and getting to play with the systems already "fixed". I will always look back fondly on BFA, even though I understand it was built on a very shaky and rotten foundation in many ways.

I remember during the pandemic my friends convinced me to play WoW again since we had all the time in the world. I checked the best dps and found out fire mage was destroying single target bosses. Started levelling a mage during the corruption era when they first got introduced. After getting max level and finding out that i need to basically have all mastery corruptions and that damn trinket from the previous raid, my mage journey came to an end kinda soon.. The randomness of the corruption system before they introduced that vendor was hell.. You have to drop the gear that you need from the bosses, have it dropped with corruption, have it the corruption type you want AND having the corruption tier you wanted. That made BiS gearing just a big hell for me. I continued the rest of the expansion with my DH slashing stuff around. It is really unfortunate that i couldnt experience the full glory of Battle for Dazar'alor. The expansion for me was consisting of corruption and the mindless dailies i had to do in the all the different areas to open flying...

Funny i was actualy just thinking about if bfa was as not bad now after the shadowlands-dreanorlike Fiasco. I playied bfa from the start up until 8.3 (i was recruited to the army) so i couldnt finish it. And i very match enjoyed bfa , mostly the quests, dungons, raids(normal and lfr sorry), nazatar and mechagon. But i also didnot hate warfronts or the island expedition but i did play alot of them alot. Now hearing you say it war front was really a place where i just put a youtube video of someone (maybe even your's) and just chill killing mobs and rares. Idk if that was a bad thing or not, i liked how it effected the zone after the battle, with all the rare and the toys and pets and mounts you could get. I also liked the progress i had with kill this boss, first i was very weak and had to team up with people or join them to defeat the boss and in 8.2 and 8.2.5 i was able to solo even the hardest using my warlock tank tactics. I do agree that bfa was far from great i also think that the story, even though it was great in my opinion and probble the best we had for developing secondary faction character and giving them spotlight. It was full with politic... Not real world politic but azeroth onces which still done harm as the real onces. The whole story divide the player base first to alliance and the horde than to sylvanas loyalist and not. All of it became an undless argumants betwen the player base and regardless of your side it made all players more toxic. No wonder they brought a final big baddy to unite somehow the comunity, maybe some players didnt like it that we switched from faction war to some islands like zandalar and kultiras to naga and ashara to nzoth in one expantion but i think it made it packed and intriging. I will always remeber bfa as a nice expanstion that brought me joy at my last year of school regardless of the overall opinion. My interest ectually returned to warcraft now with the dragonflight expanstion ,unfortunatly i cannot play wow due to time problems but regardless i am very intereated in the story and hope everyone having fun.

Regarding the corruptions, before them there was the crucible of storms raid that had gear with benefits at a cost, like an extra mechanic you had to deal with. To this day I still think that gear in particular was a novel concept, with the right traits and classes, I could see many ways for people to deal with those downsides and gain a good amount from the benefits, but the moment they added the corruption it was like they completely abandoned that concept and instead made it so that the downsides were pretty much all the same and equally unavoidable unless your clock was strong enough and even then it felt like a worse version of the crucible of storms gear. And because of the limited access to the corruptions you wanted in particular, it made it rather difficult to experiment unless you were the few that got exactly what you wanted.

BFA was fun as hell I had the 2 piece from Antourus, The 300 ilv sets at 110 from quests, Fully maxed out artifact weapons which the quests it could go was about 250 (255 if you had Scythe or Ta'eshelach) One of the Argus' trinkets that could be upgraded every time you defeated him. I was able to kill fresh 120's. Island grinds made leveling the neck super easy as you can pull the entire place and mow them down in minutes! 8.2 Gear from The Eternal Place was nice and I still use to this day for Time walking. Corruption gear was intense. Those that remember TD could one-shot things if you were geared.

My biggest Issue with Shadowland was the fact that the epic, super duper, final solution to defeat the Jailer was a crown as epic as the Lich Kings crown,,,, which looked like it was from an super mario game........ oh and Sylvanas got way to much screen time and her build up was a freaking mess.

BFA was amazing looking back in hindsight, BESIDES Azerite armor! The gearing of azerite and itemization was awful, but the quests, the raids, the music, the mounts…so many memorable and unique elements overall.

The only problem with Draenor was, that it was undeveloped due to cut content. BFA was straig up bad, especially since people were hyped after glorious Legion. The only good thing about it was Saurfang storyline and his character.

I came back in 8.1-8.2. I think that’s the play past 3 previous expansions with many having some pretty brutal systems like Legion legendary (drops), BFA Azerite armour, and everything Shadowlands.

I did a bit of arcane mage in BFA. I pretty much only wanted the clearcast powers that massively increased the power of arcane missiles. Problem is, none of the "upgrades" had it, so even +1000 intellect was still a dps loss.

You mentioned in the seasonal affixes that Awakened was the only time when Blizzard gave us free Shroud of Concealments. During Shadowlands Season 3 we had the Encrypted affix and whenever you would kill the Wo Relic you'd become shrouded for a duration. It feels that Blizzard also tightened up the percentages so there's less mobs in dungeons to warrant skipping due to not having enough count to finish the run. Infested was also the most buggy affix Blizzard has ever made and pretty much was never fixed 100%. Beguiling was horrible, it just made the dungeons feel so slow while giving annoying mechanics to deal with. Friends of mine that pushed through the launch of BfA pretty much quit the game during season 3 because of Beguiling.

Running DH with max corruption twidev set was a fucking wild ride in high keys. I didn't join until just before Nya dropped so I'm hella biased but I enjoyed my time with BFA. Came back cause they burned my tree. Still mad I didn't get to actually kill Sylvanas in SL. Fuck her redemption. She genocided my people.

I really enjoyed the Drustvar storyline, as well as riding the wagon around Voldun. The pirate theme was fun, too, and Flynn was great comic relief. That said, grinding world quests for a pittiance of azerite sucked, and we gave up at the end of the xpac with those invasions in Pandaria and Uldum.

Just yesterday I played on a free trial character (cus I'm busy rn and I can't afford to spend 12 euros to play once or twice a month) and thought of exploring all the stuff Drustvar has to offer (loved the zone when I first started questing there, but I didn't explore it all cause I'm always speed running shit). I absolutely love BfA content.

Unfortunately, i had quit retail WoW only partially in to the Dazar'alor patch and didn't even really try the raid, but part of what i hated was that end game was basically farming world quests exclusively. You HAD to do it if you wanted to upgrade your gear, so i got burned out and just walked away and in truth, i haven't returned. Not for any of the subsequent patches, not for shadowlands, and not for dragonflight, and frankly, i haven't been compelled to return even for the next stuff. I did play Classic for a while, but i actively chose to walk away from WoW all together, but i think azerite armor pushed me away from WoW as a whole.

I did a bit of levelling in BfA zones when I briefly came back to retail to see what it was like. It was fine. Nice looking zones, the quest system was decent, bonus objectives felt worthwhile. Nothing that made me think "Wow, that was amazing!" but I certainly wasn't bored. Which is something at least.

The biggest problem with Azerite armor was that it was not even on the beta until the week before release. I had alpha access and there was no armor the entire time. We were putting in bug reports for it daily and still nothing.

The problem for me with BFA is that it sort of just showed more the problems of the systems that were put in prior expansions. The mission table that basically put mobile free to play like timers in the game, world quests chores, and then the borrowed power systems again that just added everything together. For me, I felt I was doing more chores than having fun. Same things where there in Shadowlands which is why I stopped retail. Playing Classic again reminds me of why I liked WoW as it's devoid of a lot of these systems.
