This is True. In Duelist Kingdom, he played the ridiculously overpowered Just Deserts, as well as 2 Morphing Jars, which can eliminate multiple cards quickly. Then in their Battle City Duel, he played Destiny Board. Lastly in Season 5, Bakura played a Deck Out Strat... he's so unique and tactical. It's a shame we didn't see him actually Succeed with some Duel's, besides Bonz. It's pretty much the same curse as Mai.

I do wish though we got more duels with Bakura. As the only people we see him duel (that actually finish)are Yugi/Yami Yugi, Bones, and Yami Marik. He does duel Kaiba for a bit but they never finish the duel(which kinda sucks cause it’s one of 3 regular duels in the final arc of the anime). So part of me is wondering what a duel between Joey and Bakura would be.

@@michaelnally2841 It was more or less hinted in the manga that Bakura was superior to Joey because in the manga he destroyed Joey's Red-Eyes with no issue using cards and how close Bakura was to decking out Yugi if it wasn't for an extremely lucky last draw. The anime put extra emphasis on Joey being out of Bakura's league by more or less saying only Yugi was capable of beating Atem.

This duel is one of the one of the ones where it was better explained in the manga. For reference the important aspects come from Yugioh duelist starting with ch 144 1.) Dark Necrofears summoning condition was absurd. Bakura's fiends were required to be destroyed while in Atk mode within 5 turns, its not that he didn't put them in defense he couldn't. 2.) Destiny Board needed Dark Necrofear in the grave in order to move the Ouja board pieces, at one point Yugi revives Dark Necrofear (similar to the anime) and doing so prevents Ouja board from working. 3.) Fiend Sanctuary was not a card, it was just an effect of Dark Necrofear. Sacrificing a monster per turn, using monster zones for spell trap cards, all of that was anime only. For that matter the spirit letters weren't separate cards they seemed to be attached to the original destiny board like counters. 4.) Yugi didn't have fiends exile in the manga, he used a different convoluted combo to break Bakura's strategy. Yugi and Bakura (mostly Yugi) did make misplays in the duel, but it was a more cohesive duel in the original. I believe the reason they changed it so much was because one of Bakura's cards "deja vu" was needlessly complex but then they turned around and made fiends sanctuary anyway. The other duel that the manga significantly changed was Yugi vs Seto round 3 (their third duel in the manga, 2nd in the anime). Seto had Negate attack during mostly the entire duel and could have negated Celtic Guardians attack at the end even if Yugi didn't stop. He was presumably testing Yugi's resolve as he by all means won that duel. I would love for you to go over that manga duel as it had "Expert rules" a deviation of the standard rules of duelist kingdom and made for an interesting game. It's duelist ch 41 if interested.

There's 1 thing I'm wondering about the manga duel (didn't read the manga, I just read the duel progress on the wiki): why did Yugi attack with Gamma when Bakura had a DEF Earthbound Spirit? I can see some justification in attacking with Dark Magician Girl prior even though the attack would just bounce off (to test if DMG is possessed or the possession stuck to Gamma only), but that Gamma attack the next turn just seems completely useless to me? Does the manga explain that? Because as far as I can see it, the manga version of Earthbound Spirit is still 2000 DEF.

Earthbound spirit didn't have any particular stats shown in the manga, they were presumably created later on. Given the context of the duel they would have had to be some number less than 750 for Atk and some number less than 1500 for def but this fact evidently wasn't followed when designing the card for the game. They usually don't show stats unless its relevant, one of the more notable duels where this was the case was Joey vs Bonz where we didn't see zombies had zero defense until Joey played Shield and Sword. Still that was a great catch, I didn't think anything of it until you said so. I'd recommend the yugioh manga, even though you probably know how the duels will end they were all rather thrilling in their own right and its considerably faster paced than the anime. You could probably go through all of duelist kingdom in less time than it would take the show to get there.

  • @rusto_
    @rusto_2 жыл бұрын

In the manga, Destiny Board and Dark Necrofear work quite differently, Dark Necrofear actually requires the monsters for its summon to be in Attack position and to be destroyed over the past 5 turns in order for them to be used for Dark Necrofear's summon. Dark Necrofear also was responsible for the Ghost of Dark Sanctuary effect as well, the field spell wasn't even played. Destiny Board also required Dark Necrofear to be destroyed in order to activate, however it didn't place the Spirit Message cards, it just worked kinda like how counters would, spelling out D-E-A-T-H. That's where the field spell came in. It was an addition into the anime that that gave room for the Spirit Messages to be placed on the field while also explaining Dark Necrofear's effect. That's a part of why Bakura seemed to make these weird plays in the anime, the writers essentially took the manga duel then just edited it a little, with some plot armor to cover it up. Several Battle City duels were changed as well, look at Marik vs. Bakura for another good example

For what it’s worth, the majority of misplaying in this Duel is a result of the anime playing fast and loose with card effects. In the manga, Dark Necrofear needed the Fiends to have been in Attack Mode when they were destroyed and Destiny Board couldn’t be activated until Necrofear was in the Graveyard so Bakura couldn’t have used it earlier. 🤔

I feel for that you just have to look at what Yu-Gi-Oh was supposed to be at this point. While the card game was the main focus, the author was more interested in general puzzles and Pen and Paper style games (as seen in the original manga). So a lot of the duels reflect that. The author probably didn't analyse what every character SHOULD have at a certain point and what would make the technically best play. The author wants to tell a story with this game. And for this story, the challenge has to gradually increase. I mean, look at basically every game in Battle City. More or less every game during that tournament had some kind of boss monster, boss card or boss mechanic that the characters had to overcome during the duel by solving some kind of puzzle. Most of these card effects wouldn't even make much sense or be very powerful when you look at them in real life. But they make sense in a story where the challenge should gradually increase. That's also why it is never portrayed as the characters just drawing the correct card when they need it. They have to find the solution for the puzzle first and THEN they are actually able to draw that card. I mean, would have been way less epic if Yugi was just drawing Slifer and realising "Oh yeah, I do have that card and it's perfect for the situation".

You know he has powerplays and it frustrates the audience that he doesn't just commit but dragging it out and instilling fear and doubt into the goody deus ex machina Atem is delightful. And hes chaotic, helping, assisting, befriending, betraying, neglecting his host to protecting his host. Plot wise best antagonist. Despite his losing streak everyone was wary whenever the spikey cream puff stepped up to duel.

About the whole "explaining rule" where Bakura could simply not explained how the possesion works to yugi I dont think it is a missplay because the general rule about effects in the anime It is that you need to explain then as they happen For example If i have Monster that cannot be Destroyed by battle and once per turn i can destroy one Monster of the opponent I can wait for him to try to destroy it with a high attack Monster The destruction fails I destroy his Monster with my effect Essentially making his guard down because he thought that my Monster only had one effect The exception to this is conditions For example every turn i need to sacrifice a Monster to keep my Monster in field Conditions are explained from the start This opens Room to my opponent try to break the condition

Usually it would be something like "You can play/ set use one spell card per turn" but in that duel it seems different. I guess he and "normal" Marik were so sure about winning with Ra that they couldn't see a way that they lose it. And even after Ra becomes useless, Bakura quickly summons a trio of atleast somewhat powerful monsters (Dark Ruler, Necrofear, Earl of Denise) leaving no good reanimation targets in the grave. In the manga, Bakura opts to make Yami Marik draw Ra specifically, so he can force him to discard it via his "Multiple Destruction" trap card, thinking Ra would be useless in the grave. That's when Yami Marik first reveals the OTK and point-to-point transfer abilities of Ra. Even the "normal" Marik didn't know about them, which costs him and Bakura the match.

My general headcanon about the rules of explaining cards is that if you use a specific card's function that the anime rules you have to explain it, but you only need to explain the function you're using. So Bakura needed to explain that there is a ghost and what it does when it triggers for the first time, but only needed to explain that it can move to a different monster when he uses the ability to move the ghost. Also some later anime do show that as the tech advances there are ways for players to read cards, check GYs, etc. from their Duel Disks, but we all know about duelists and reading. In the first few series where this isn't a function added to duel disks, I would imagine that the headcanon rule of only needing to explain what's relevant at the exact moment is done for convenience so people don't have to be running across the field constantly to check each other's cards. Though they could always just use Solid Vision to simply display the card text across the field. It's also a dubism but even as a kid I figured "I guess there's like a database of card names and effects and they would need to just memorize all of their cards" because the dub doesn't have ANY card text.

Regarding the reveal of Dark Sanctuary's ghost powers: Generally in the anime, players are required to explain the cards once the relevant part of the effect has taken place, but aren't if it hasn't yet. Some stuff, like if the first part of the effect builds into a second effect later, isn't required, but sometimes is, which is where the most inconsistencies are.

5:04 what's even funnier is: 1. He didn't have to summon them in face down defense position. Normal Summoning monsters in face up defense position was a thing in the anime all the way through 5Ds. 2. Every single one of his monsters had enough defense points to either tie with or beat Yugi's monsters. The Portrait's Secret had 1500 defense, meaning essentially nothing would happen, while Headless Knight and Gross Ghost had 1700 defense and 1800 defense respectively, meaning Yugi would've taken damage if he had attacked with either Gazelle or Gamma. Also, here's a fun fact about Destiny Board: In the original manga, it didn't just win you the duel, it KILLED your opponent. Yeah, not because of a Shadow Game or anything. The literal effect reads: "When all five letters have been revealed, the opposing player dies."

I think when the effect activates they have to explain how it works correctly so, when the ghost was in Dark Magician Girl and the ghost's effect activates Bakura had to explain why it activated correctly.

Actually, I think Kaiba had a point, considering the Pharaoh dueled him in duelist kingdom, and that exact scenario happened to him when he recklessly attacked a set monster, and ran into Man-Eater Bug, so in this case, knowing Bakura uses those monsters might make him hesitate. It was a massive risk on Bakura's end, but he got lucky and it paid off.

I actually love the attention to Detail on Destiny Board Letters. They made animations for all nine letters, or at the very least eight letters shown in this duel. Death and Final only share one letter, the “a”. So, showing the different letters takes more time as to animate the new letters being chosen. Props to the animators for doing this.

Bakura misplayed hard but it actually fits his character pretty well. He’s incredibly impulsive and he commits 100% to the first plan he comes up with. Zork literally tried to kill Yugi every conceivable chance he got, the man’s not a strategist and he has no patience. The second he saw Dark Necrophere he was sold on using her effect.

Are we watching the same show??? If Bakura wasn’t evil he would be the greatest monk of all time.. this man is more patient than a Venus flytrap. This man is the opposite of impulsive. His Strategies may never worked on Atem and Yugi, but he is focused on a strategy ever game he plays and is very patient and not impulsive.

I don't think we actually have *any* duels from Arc-V yet? So I'm gonna be a little greedy and suggest we cover all 3 of Yuya's duels against Jack Atlas. They're quite possibly one of the strongest ways we can observe and gauge Yuya's growth as a duelist and person.

Their first duel was funny AF because it showed the world just how much of a scrub Yuya was. Second duel forced Yuya to still rely on cheap Action Cards until he could bring out Nirvana High Paladin, who basically pulled an Obi-Wan Kenobi that allowed Yuya to win against a 10,000 ATK Tyrant Red Dragon Archfiend. The third duel was literally Yuya being scared AF of potentially re-releasing Zarc until the last turn of the game...

Indeed. If we assume he had most of the cards needed for his combo, why not summon the monsters into defence, would have done a little bit of damage, and even if yugi could run over his monsters, it would have slowed yugi down a bit. Because gazelle would have been likely the first summoned, which he would not have so easily overcome the defence, so would have needed to tribute it for dark magician girl, to run over it and the other monsters, maybe having gamma attacking for a little extra damage rather than repeatedly taking several big hits for no reason. Would still get all the monsters in the grave and then could have dark necrofear run over gamma, then yugi would have needed to run over necrofear with dark magician girl with magic formula then you can have the countdown to destiny board ticking. Summon monsters and then pick of the weaker monsters like kuriboh while leaving dark magician girl a liability on board. Not much yugi could do. If he burns the monster reborn earlier, bakura would have taken damage but not enough to lose like he had with all the attacks that had been made over his monsters in attack mode before, while also meaning yugi would have no way to stop the dark sanctuary, since with dark door in play, and trap cards in bakura’s arsenal, yugi would not be able to safely attack, and would just have lost to destiny board. Maybe that’s my reading of it, but it feels like the reason why they had yugi beat bakura in this misplay riddled duel is because they need yugi to win, but want to show off bakura’s deck a bit as well. Had bakura not needed to lose because of plot, yugi might have lost. But then again, some duels in the battle city tournament are like that. For example, odeon could have beaten Joey without needing to use the fake god card, but was pushed into it by marik

This is another case of the Duel making much more sense in the manga, where Destiny Board cannot be activated unless Dark Necrofear is in the Graveyard, and Dark Necrofear cannot be Summoned unless the three Fiends were destroyed in Attack Position. The anime writers just didn’t care.

So, in your analysis, you mention that Yugi had Monster Reborn in hand before Dark Spirit of the Silent was on the field. Couldn't he have used Monster Reborn earlier, thereby preventing Bakura from winning anyway, or at the very least sparing him a turn or two? Or did the spooky ghost have to be *off* the field for that to occur? Just finding it interesting that you never at least addressed this point.
