Warsaw, Poland, Old Town

Музыка

Ah, Warsaw's Old Town. It's enough to make you feel like an extra in a Fellini film - all charmingly narrow cobblestone streets and buildings that look like they haven't changed since the Middle Ages, which of course, they haven't. Thanks to a little misunderstanding with a Nazi flamethrower in the 40s, most of it had to be lovingly reconstructed. But hey, those Poles, they've got a real knack for historical accuracy, even if it means the buildings the tourists are ogling are about as medieval as a Starbucks.
The main drag is this giant square, Rynek Starego Miasta, sounds like something out of a Dostoevsky novel, right? Bunch of burgher houses lining the sides, all gussied up with these colourful facades - a perfect backdrop for an existential crisis, or at least a very expensive pierogi lunch at one of those upscale Polish eateries. Don't forget to snap a pic of St. John's Archcathedral, some 14th-century Gothic number that puts on summer concerts, which always sound lovely in theory, but in reality, you're just battling pigeons for elbow room while some earnest young violinist struggles to be heard over the drone of a tour bus idling nearby.
And if you're feeling fancy, there's always the Royal Castle. Apparently, they've done a bang-up job restoring the apartments - must be nice, all that space, none of that pesky rent control. Though, I hear the gardens are a bit much on the manicured side. You know me, I like my greenery a little more, well, unkempt. Makes you feel more like you're communing with nature, you know?
