Warren, OHIO | What Happened?
If you've ever wondered how bad Warren, Ohio looks well...here's some of the worst areas. We're going to take a look at some hoods, some abandoned homes and buildings, and also some rust belt history. The crime rate in Warren is 38% higher than the national average and is one of the least safe cities in Ohio(81% of cities in the United States are considered to be safer). This Rust Belt city has suffered economic depression since the 1970's industrial decline and has went from around 63k population to todays number of 38k. Would you live here? Let’s take a drive and check it out!

Not only Warren, East Liverpool, Wellsville, Midland P.A., etc. Manufacturing, Steel Mills, Potteries, auto manufacturers, outsourced to foreign countries or closed down. Some still hanging on hoping for better days. Salem, Canfield, Boardman, Calcutta, etc. aren't doing to bad. People went elsewhere for job opportunities and this is the results. I left East Liverpool in 1976 to California as companies were slowly dying. I came back in 2017 for family reasons, but left in 2021, back west to Nevada. California was good to me, but cost of living too high. L.A. has areas much like this. Run down , trash, homeless every where. I have traveled throughout the U.S. this is becoming common in and around cities. Sad to see beautiful towns that were prosperous in decay.

The rust belt
I grew up in Warren in the 60s and 70s and it was really fun. My dad owned a car dealership in town. I left in 1981 and moved to California. Still love visiting Warren and going to my favorite places to eat...Buena Vista, Sunrise and 422. Yum!
So many abandoned houses and buildings! Great footage showcasing what once was a thriving town, now left a decaying shell of it's former self.
My hometown, stayed until I was in my mid 30s. If anybody ever asks why I left, I’ll show them this. I recognize so many places, the old St. Joes hospital, factories, etc. My sister and other family members are still there. Some parts are still nice, but not like it once was. Thanks for posting.

The old St Joe's is set to be torn down sometime this year. I hope they can make something useful and productive to the community with the land after the fact.
Having been raised in Warren, Ohio and seen both sides of this city’s economy , I can honestly say that my heart breaks each time I pass thru there. No attempt has ever been successful in their recovery efforts and the neighborhoods I used to play in all day have become an area that I very rarely pass thru any more…. And if I do it’s with great trepidation and a broken heart. 😞

When I was a kid, I heard about “depressed areas” that would come once steel left the region. A few years ago, driving though the Beaver Valley of Western, PA, I became depressed at all the changes. For the first time, I realized…THIS is why they call it a depressed area!
Seeing this just makes me sad I grew up there and still visit every year and every year it seems to get worse as the years pass it’s so hard to see your hometown slowly become this! But still no matter where I go this will always be home to me!

What happened? The steel mills and other manufacturing jobs left and were not replaced by anything else. Those who could afford to leave left, leaving mostly the poor. This is part of what happened.

We started buying our steel from China. That's what happened to our steel mills.
This is what happens when big businesses decide to pull out of any given city, they turn into ghost towns.
I'll tell you what happened to Warren, OH just like what happened to Detroit, Cleveland, and a lot of other Midwestern towns: the factories shut down and the jobs moved south! And then over to China.
My brother lives in Warren Ohio . When I visited like 12 years ago, the abandoned houses were very frequent. There are some nice neighborhoods out there though. Just as this video depicted
Warren is one rough place thanks for posting this one
Ironically this was the first town in America to have electric street illumination. Birthplace of Roger Ailes, Dave Grohl and Paul Warfield.
Absolutely terrible. I grew up there. Haven't lived there since 1988...Very sad to see that it is so rundown, raggedy & ratchett.
My family is from Warren. It breaks my heart every time we go to visit Grandparents and family.

My first job was delivering food in Warren in the 80s. I delivered on every street in this video, and to most of the commercial buildings. I knew every nook and cranny of that city. Shame to see what it has become.
So sad what happened there. Used to visit from Germany - working for Packard Electric /Delphi and visited Dana Street and North River Rd Delphi Plant 19. Always stayed in Niles. Used to shop in the eastwood mall and had a good time between 1994 and 2002. Seems I would not like to come here any more...
My hometown. It’s sad, cost of living here is great. Just no jobs.

Right I wish it was closer to Cleveland so I could work here and live in Warren.
Left there in 1973, just before the beginning of the end. Visited a few years ago, and the Hot Dog Shoppe was still a bright spot. Otherwise, kinda sad.
Left in 2009 in my mid 40's, and that was pushing it for me even. So sad what happened to my home town. My grandpa moved here from Romania due to the prosperous economy back in the early 1900's. But that was a long time ago. I remember my grandpa's neighborhood being nice, manicured lawns, moral hard working people. But most of those people are all gone now. This is due to steel mills and other manufacturing closing yes, but many other reasons as well!
I grew up in that area (Warren Western Reserve high school, class of 88, the school isn't even there anymore) It's awful going back to visit relatives anymore as it looks worse every time I pass through.
WOW. All those businesses, schools, looks like nursing homes and hospitals closed. Very sad. Some people are still living there though.

I haven't been back to my "home" area (grew up in Canton/Massillon) since a brief visit 21yrs ago on my way through from five beautiful years stationed in Germany and on my way to my next post in Colorado. This series of videos makes me afraid to go back to visit my friends and what is left of family because the decay and decline are breaking my heart.
I grew up in a different part of the world knowing that everything is beautiful in America, everybody has plenty. The image that this country protects to the world is , the US , is the greatest, the best in the world! I hope you can understand my English, but know that I have seen places like this one , I see how wrong I was . I feel sad to know places like this exist in the USA. Again I ask , how come no one does anything ? 😳😔 Thank you for sharing this video with us .🙏🙏 My blessings to all of you , from Washington. Good day everyone.🌸🌸

Maria, this city and this area is being run by the same people for decades and the mentality does not change. We have been represented in Washington by nothing more than people who really don't care, our local representative has been in office since 2003 has hasn't done very much to help the area. Couple bucks here and there, mainly for two local military type installations which in my opinion doesn't put much of anything back into the area. Now the same representative is seeking to be our next Senator. Backward thinking on everything, the city of Warren does not enforce it's codes and thus you see the neighborhoods are simply falling apart. All the Warren city leaders care about is "downtown" that's it. It's sad, I live here and see it every day. There is an older generation holding on barely, some working folk and a whole lot of working poor or unemployed. I could go on for hours and yes, you were not given the truth about the USofA. It is a great country yes, we give a lot of money away to other countries and in general the people of the US want to but it seems now to have got out of control. We need things fixed and addressed here at home. Have a Great Day Maria and Bless You!!
Thank you so much Hoods N Hollers for uploading this great video, I appreciate it!
The section 8 housing looks better than most of the private homes in warren ... Escaped in 1982 by joining the Navy.
While the blight in the city is sad, and abandoned homes do need to be taken down, this is only a one sided representation. There’s a lot of good, nice, historical neighborhoods with amazing neighbors. Take this with a grain of sale
Living in Warren still, I feel this video makes things look worse than they are. We still have a thriving, beautiful, historic, city with great suburbs. If the city would tear down the ruined buildings and houses, it would make a world of difference.

I live not far from Warren in Newton Falls and must say if you have depression (like me) this area is not a good place for you... Bleak and depressing no doubt about it...
This is nearly any town in the US, every state has this, on the plus side homes are going up in price in Warren so people are starting to fix up homes.
Warren tanked much faster than Youngstown did after industry left. Really don't know why... Just an observation.
Makes me want golden stallion.
Rolling past my house at 8:19 lol... I just have a broken window right now.
We are wore out but there still good areas and still good people 👍
Holy crap! I didn't think it was possible, but this place almost makes Canton look good.
I lived in Warren Ohio between 2005and 2014 and the problem with Warren is the same problem that many steel mill cities faced. The mills shut down and all the secondary companies slowly shut down people moved to where jobs were landlords bought up houses and then turned them into low income housing and properties were not kept up and eventually were condemned.
Very nice work documenting this and showing us these places HH!!
Awful as it is, it is cheap to live there. You just have to work remotely, commute really far, or be an over the road truck driver to make it work as far as jobs go.
It's sad and scary how things have changed. The worst part this only took 25 years or less. So the question is what's going to happen in the next 10-25 years?
My hometown left 7yrs ago for the hot desert 🏜 however crime is rampant economic decline for over thirty yrs and counting. But I still have fond memories.
Just watching this now. I live in Warren near all these places…
I was there a year and a half ago. I loved it. The people were nice and friendly. Yes, in some parts of Warren it is run down. But nonetheless it's still a beautiful place and a lot of history.
The mills left and nothing came in their place.
I grew up in Campbell, we left in '92...I go back to visit family every few years...it looks just like this...
This is where I live Warren Ohio it's terrible man just nothing but drugs
Warren been on a downhill slide since all the mills closed and gm left, and Delphi.

This is sad. I used to visit friends back in the 60s. It was thriving there. I loved to go there! Now look. So sad
This is what my birthplace city of Niagara Falls NY looks like after years of similar disinvestment and deindustrialization.
What does it take to bring industry back there ? They did it where I live by offering incentives to manufacturers like not paying any taxes for twenty years and other things. But it's all contingent upon the state supplying enough employees which means infrastructure for residential properties. I don't know if it's possible to bring back these areas. If only they would tear down these derelict homes, it would look so much better.
The most beautiful homes fall down and are derelict and the ugly contemporary places are where the few people left have to live.... A shame really...
3:11 this chuch looks very familiar where is it at? Im pretty sure i saw this as a kid.
When the cars in the driveway are more than the house
3:40 used to be my apartment in the 80s. We called it Highland Homes
I still have family in the City, it's still a few nice areas in the City! Close to WGH and around the Hospitals, Most Midwest cities have went down over the years because of the Steel Industries closed down, which forced people to move to other places to get jobs. Still have a special place in my heart for Warren and the Youngstown area.
Pass an Homesteading act. Give the lots away.

In 1985 I worked with a lady name Sarah and I think she came from Warren Ohio. Now I see why because of the economic decline that she left. But for some reason I keep thinking she said there was some kind of prison there called Mansfield?? Or is there a Mansfield Ohio??

She was probably referring to the prison in Mansfield, Ohio, which is about half way between Akron and Columbus. This prison was made famous because The Shawshank Redemption was filmed there.

Like other older rust belt cities, Warren failed to reinvent and retool itself for different types of business and industry. This is the end result of that failure.
