Gday Lee, Australian here… Where you’re consistently going wrong with the Fish and Chip reviews is that the best fish and chips in Oz are found at cheap and cheerful family run Chippies in the suburbs and town’s frequented by loyal locals… Not at rather pricey beach side Seafood restaurants (who never get it quite right) which you’ve done at every stop 👍🏼

Not getting overly protective but during my years in the UK I had Fish and Chips all over London also at Cornwall, Brighton, Dover, Weymouth, Poole and Edinburgh. Probably more but that's what I can remember. They were all average to terrible. Greasy and bland. Australia stills wins hands down for variety and quality. Furthermore - Every tourist who comes here heads for Bondi Beach. (There's hundred of beaches in and around Sydney but Bondi is where they go.) 95% of the customers at Bondi are tourists. Hate to say this but I don't think they try too hard. Just charge a lot. Go to some of the other beaches where the locals swim and eat. I guarantee the F&Cs will be a lot better.

Bondi Icebergs is a normal Club in Australia and anyone can enter as a visitor (subject to standard dress rules for clubs and the NSW 5km resident exclusion). It has a separate upmarket restaurant but also has a standard club bistro with standard prices. You could have gone in and had some lunch.

Icebergs is a club under the New South Wales Registered & Licensed Club Act of 1976. So yes, members and their guests. So if you know a member, they can invite you. Or like you say, pay - $9 i think. They are under no obligation as far as allowing the public to use their facilities. Bondi is very popular with tourists because traditionally a lot of backpackers stayed in the area (back when it was cheaper), and it is the closest ocean beach to the Sydney CBD. Yeah, it can get very busy. As a beach, there is nothing wrong with Bondi though. If you don't like the surf, and don't want to pay to use the Icebergs facilities, there is a free ocean "rock" pool at the northern end to splash about in.

When you're a foreign tourist in Sydney you have to go to Bondi Beach, because when you get home all your friends are going to ask "did you go to Bondi Beach?" and you don't want to have the same dull conversation each time about how you didn't go there because the locals told you it was nothing special. So what you ought to do is to go there either as the beginning or as the end of taking the Bondi-to-Coogee Coastal Walk. Look at the murals on the retaining wall. Look at the beach and surf. Look at the Icebergs Club. Head off on your scenic walk. You'll be able to say "yes" when people ask. And you can have a swim and a bite to eat in Coogee. Bondi is not famous for being a good beach. It is famous for being famous. It originally got to be famous because it was the first ocean beach in Sydney that people could get to by public transport, starting back in the 1890s. Until a tram line was built to Cronulla in 1911 it was the only ocean beach that most people in Sydney could go to, so it was the one they did go to, so it got to be famous. It was still the easiest beach to get to until the trams got ripped out in the 1950s. Anyway, it's still famous. Tourists go there because it's famous. Everything there is overpriced because tourists buy it anyway. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Bondi is rubbish. It's quite a good beach. What I'm saying is that there are better beaches in Sydney. Hundreds of better beaches in New South Wales. Thousands of better beaches in Australia. It's quite a good beach. But nothing special.

Not sure why you would go to Bondi and instead of walking to Coogee, you sit down for fish and chips, again! If the only thing that’s better about Britain than Australia is the fish and chips, I think we can live with that, I suppose though that the fish and chips in Britain are all Halal now.🤔🙄

To be honest, there's much nicer epicurean delights in Sydney than 'Fish & Chips' however, I do appreciate your commitment to discovery and comparison. It's all about bench marks. Here's my 'two bob' on the subject, should you be so inclined to explore some more on this 'fishy' story. Also, I'm enjoying your daily morning posts. Keep up the great work. In my humble opinion, these are the best 'Fish & Chip' Joints in Sydney: 1. Saint Peter (Paddington) 2. Out Of The Blue (Clovelly) 3. Kiwi Fish Shop (Rosebery) 4. Fat Fish (Annandale) 5. Fich At Petersham (Petersham) 6. Fish Butchery (Paddington) 7. Fishmongers Bondi (Bondi) 8. The Rocks Café (The Rocks) 9. Mohr Fish (Surry Hills) 10. Costi’s Fish & Chips (Barangaroo) 11. The Boathouse (Palm Beach) 12. Doyles on the Beach Restaurant (Watsons Bay) 13. Love.Fish (Barangaroo) 14. Bottom of the Harbour (Balmoral Beach) 15. Ocean Foods (Drummoyne) 16. Bondi’s Best Seafood (Bondi) 17. Sydney Fish Market (Sydney) 18. Seafood At The Beach ( Dee Why) Also, the attraction of Bondi for many I suppose is its proximity to the city and the coastal walk to the other city beaches. Having a choices of a so many beaches, including the many inner harbour beaches that are clean and only 15 from the CBD is rare in this world. As a Sydneysider, I also find Bondi somewhat overrated and pretentious. It has become overrun lately by an army of pouting, augmented 'instagrammers' and that's enough to put anyone off their Fish & Chips, let alone greasy oil. You will find nicer 'city' beaches along the coastal walk. There are much more aesthetically pleasing beaches around Australia, being home to 11,761 recorded beaches, spread over 50,000+ kilometres of coastline. It would take you 27 years to visit every single beach in Australia. That's one beach every day. Best beaches I've visited in Australia are Whitehaven Beach Whitsundays, Queensland, Hyams Beach Jervis Bay, NSW and Squeaky Beach Gippsland, Victoria but there are so, so many that I haven't been to, we are spoilt for choice. I hear the West Australian beaches are next level too. Here's another list of Sydney better beaches if you're interested in no particular order: Tamarama Beach, Eastern Suburbs (coastal walk), Bilgola Beach, Northern Beaches, Freshwater Beach, Northern Beaches (just up the way from Manly), Manly Beach, Northern Beaches, Bronte Beach, Eastern Suburbs (coastal walk), Avalon Beach, Northern Beaches, Shelly Beach, Northern Beaches, Palm Beach, Northern Beaches, Clovelly Beach, Eastern Suburbs (coastal walk), Coogee Beach, Eastern Suburbs (coastal walk) - 'Chish and Fips' right on the beach has pretty good fish & chips and only costs about $17.50 per serving, Whale Beach, Northern Beaches, Balmoral Beach Middle Head, Northern Beaches.

Lee, good to see you got it right between Bondi and Manly. I'm an Aussie and could never understand the hype with Bondi beach, not a patch on Manly or Sydney's northern beaches. Manly was my beach growing up as a kid, and I've always loved it. It's just as easy to get to as Bondi with a lovely ferry trip across the harbour thrown in. Very busy these days though, more touristy.

Bondi Icebergs is part swimming club and part posh restaurant. The club decided to make a little extra money and rebuilt the top bit then rented it out as a restaurant. It is THE place to be seen in Sydney's east but don't bother unless you are OK with dropping $300 ( £150 ) on lunch for two.

Yeah like a lot of iconic dishes, the quality of Fish & chips varies widely from one establishment to another, even in the UK. I've had the best Fish & Chips in my life in the UK, and also the worst too (at a pub in Kent from memory). As you rightly pointed out, it's all in the consistency of the batter & the temperature (and cleanliness) of the oil it's cooked in, and there's something about busy kitchens that many people don't know regarding their deep fryers. Every time you drop a fresh load of chips, fish, chicken, etc into a vat it will slightly cool the oil (more so if it's a smaller-capacity fryer) and greatly so if the food is chilled or frozen. Depending on the design (gas/electric) and vat capacity it can take some time for the oil to heat back up to temperature, and if you're dumping load after load into it without a break during a busy period then the oil will often remain well under-temperature, resulting in longer cooking times and greater oil absorption. Just the colour, uniformity & greasiness of that batter in the video tells the story.

Bondi Icebergs is a swimming club, nothing more. Anyone can become a social member and it's $25 a year, hardly expensive or exclusive, if you want to become a swimming member you need to be proposed by a current swimming member but that's nothing unusual. As a tourist you could've gone in a for a drink or lunch, nothing stopping you.

I have to say the fish looked very average suburban takeaway. And plenty of suburban takeaways would do a better job than that. In my suburban area, I can get fish and chips for less than $20. It's nothing amazing, but good for the price, and certainly not too oily. Surfish has a lot of ratings in the 3.5 to 4.5 range. So generally OK, although 3.5 is a bit low for such a prominent location where you are paying a fairly high price.

A lot of fish n chips shops in Australia these days fry in "vegetable" oils like Canola, Sunflower, Cotton seed, Corn and Safflower oil instead of Lard. Cotton seed oil is the preferred cooking oil by restaurants because it's the cheapest but not the healthiest. These "Vegetable" oils have been found to be inflammatory on the human body. Traditionally Lard has been used for deep frying fish n chips it is a saturated animal fat and was incorrectly labelled by Heart Foundations to be unhealthy and the cause of increased cholesterol levels. Likewise, Margarine was marketed as a more healthy alternative to butter however Margarine is one molecule away from plastic.

Never seen much in the way of a surf at Camp Cove, though! Best bet is to forget Bondi and its ilk, and head to somewhere like Newport or north from there.

Bondi is popular and on a nice day it’s pretty good, but honestly on the list of nice beaches in Sydney it’s not near the top. It somehow just got some international recognition, but there are so many more nicer beaches. Look further afield to Cronulla or beaches between the Royal National Park and Wollongong, then there’s the whole of the South Coast or try the Northern Beaches from Manly up. Then there’s the North Coast beaches. Just on another point, with the array of so much great food choices in Australia not many of us seek out fish n chips.

Also that lemon Lime and Bitters, was that made at the bar or poured from a bottle? Only it seems very uniform looking with nothing darker down the bottom. I don't care how posh they think they are, the bottle stuff is trash. Got to ask them, do you make your LL and B or use the bottled kind? World of difference between bottle stuff and a property made LL&B. Properly being the word as not every place can make it properly.

I'm an Aussie and steer clear of battered fish that looks like that. Most fish & chips shops do it wrong here. Lucky for me, our local takeaway does excellent fish & chips.

Hey mate, I love your new way of doing the vids. I live down at Shell Cove, about an hour and a half, south of Sydney. I'm on leave from work for the month, so if you would like to come down this way, I'll be happy to show you around. And Bondi is for backpackers or people from Western Sydney. We have far better and beautiful beach's and Scenery down here. Also happy to host.

You will literally get the best fish n chips as soon as you head out of any overseas touristy spot. If you have time head up or down the coast. The fish n chip shop off the bridge in Batemans Bay, you can’t go wrong. Doyle’s at Watson Bay (Sydney) is great. But the best I’ve had is in Forster Tuncurry. 3 hours north of Sydney.

Come back over to Manly and i will take you to the best fish and chips you can ever eat. The fish is so hot and the batter is so crisp and crunchy. Amazing chips as well.

$24 for that poor excuse for fish & chips? You can find much better quality fish & chips for half the price just a short walk away on the main road.

It's such a shame that the 'Traditional Chippy' shut down, the Cod and Chip was lovely and they had proper mushy peas. IIRC it was next to Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream.

No excuse for greasy fish and chips , modern professional gas fryers of 90 to 120 mj have the power to keep the oil hot enough . Maybe they need to employ workers who know how to use a fryer correctly.

That fish and chips was way over priced. Should of been no more than $40 with the drink. You go to the tourist hot spots you'll get stung with prices. If you had walked across the road theres other shops around that have much cheaper and better quality food.

Liked the ferry to Manly gave me memories of when i did it. Hope to get back over there soon and build my new house. Land for around £20,000 to £40,000 cant believe how cheap it is.

Please can you try some Sydney staples!🙏 Vietnamese Bahn Mi - Marrickville pork roll is the OG. Theres the original store in Marrickville and one in Haymarket, near Darling Harbour & Central station. $9 and very filling. There's Banh Mi places all over Sydney - cost $6-9. It'd be bit sad if your entire Aussie series is just fish & chips and doesn't reflect our food diversity. We're really not that obsessed with fish and chips here tbh lol. However - "out of the Blue Clovelley" in Coogee, is probably the best in the Bondi/Coogee area. And only $15 for their fish and chips! Some other suggestions for food - China town - Yumcha. Or even just get a yummy Chinese dessert from the Emperors Garden Bakery. So good. A Kebab shop - try a HSP (halal snack pack) Or maybe try a Lebanese restaurant. Spice Alley in Chippendale (short walk from central station area) it's an outoor seated - street style S.E Asian food - Japanese, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Thai, Malaysian and Cantonese. Charcoal chicken - try El Jannah in Newtown or any of the charcoal chicken places around Sydney. Newtown has some great cafes and restaurants. And of course Sydney has great and cheap sushi rolls. If you're in Darling Harbour maybe check out the Chinese Garden of Friendship. It's beautiful and tranquil. And please you MUST see the Blue Mountains. As a Brit, the sheer vast expanse will blow your mind. (Lots of lookouts, trail walks - waterfall, And of course scenic world where the world's steepest railway is. Also a cable car across the canyon). Luera also has some quaint little cafes ans shops and beautiful gardens. About 90 mins by car or 2 hours by train. Nice journey. Coogee beach is a bit better than Bondi imo. Balmoral Beach across the north shore is lovely. Palm beach about an hour north of Sydney is lovely too - it's where they film Home and Away.
