We beat the heck out of our winches, then leave them caked with mud, sitting in the rain and snow, or baking under scorching sun and then expect them to jump into action at a moment's notice. The reality is that winches need love too!
This week Gone-GPN's Chris Collard takes us through the A to Z process of rebuilding an industry workhorse, the Warn M8000 . He guides us through solenoid replacement and wiring, inspecting and assembly of the planetary gears, rebuilding the electric motor, and installing new synthetic winch rope. After 15 years of abuse, did it survive?

Chris, you never finished going into detail about the ropes condition. 5:56 I see you replaced it, but what did you find that made you change it out? Maybe do another TechTip video on what to look for with synthetic cables and more back stories of the testing you did in the past.

Dang, good point. Realized this after the fact. Also, on closer evaluation of the Viking line, I decided it was still suitable for field use. I cut about 8 feet off (first wrap) and re-spooled it. I'll use the Bubba Rope line on another rig that I'm converting from steel cable.
