Warn Winch 8274 Brake Assembly Teardown and Mods

This is a new topic for my channel. In this video I will be doing a tear down and demonstration of how the brake assembly works on the Warn Winch 8274. I will also perform the c clip mod where a hole is drilled and tapped and a special washer is made to replace the c clip.

Damn never thought of that magnets idea! I'm being struggling on putting those bearings in place while installing that last part without using grease! Thank you so much sir! Thumbs up for you!!

Thanks for a look inside the brake on tge warn 8274. I was able to open mine up and discovered it was in excellent shape. Now I have confidence it will not fail me when my cj5 needs it.

Great video, thanks! I’m disassembling my 8274 now and about to take apart the brake so seeing your video was perfect timing. I ordered the Albright solenoid unit too. Hopefully it’ll show up soon. Thanks again for documenting this.

Beautiful rounded washer there you made, top notch work. Boy that was sure brave of you drilling and tapping a hardened shaft, now I know to get carbide bits for such a job!

I enjoyed the video. I am currently in the process of rebuilding a 1982 M8274 only nothing on it came apart as easily as yours! It was totally seized with rust and took weeks of soaking get it disassembled! Your use of the rare earth magnets seemed to make the assembly process of the brake straight forward, and I will definitely try that out! I look forward to seeing a video on the Albright contactor setup.

Was the bronze bushing more of a slip fit? It looks like it from your video, but my new bushing won't go in without hammering on it, and I don't think that is correct. Going to try and sand a little off the outer diameter or sand a little of the housing bore.

Can't figure this out. Free spool gear disengaged. I can turn the brake drum assembly and rotate the drum by hand. As soon as I put the top cover on I cannot rotate the drum assembly and drum by hand. Free spool is disengaged and the gear in the top cover spins freely. What is locking up.? Please help.

Been a while since I had it apart sorry not picturing everything in my head. I suggest finding the Warn 8274 pages on FB there’s a bunch of people smarter than me on there that restore and mod these things all the time.

I have the same winch and it will be interesting to see how yours performs. Have you done an update? Also, what is the found sphere-like half ball you place on the end? A cap of sorts to protect the shaft? Mine was very, very hard to remove.

Sounds like it would but I didn’t want to get any oil on the friction surfaces or even close: I hit everything with brake cleaner before assembly.

no no, dont use grease it will ruin the clutch friction disc's....use magnets, they will work perfect for getting the balls bearings to the outside...
